I understand football brings in more money that's not the argument I'm trying to make. No matter how much money they poor into the football program there is no way they will ever win a national championship in football, absolutely 0% chance.

I really want to know what is the highest rated team UC has ever beat in Football, or even played. I guarantee it probably going to be Louisville and if it is Louisville also has a 0% chance of winning a national championship.

who cares as long as they help pay the bills. They have been very entertaining and are improving as a program. They have come light years. I'll speculate here but I will venture a guess that you weren't even alive the last time UC won a BB title. Bearcat Football has been to 2 BCS bowl games recently. That is big money my friend.

I totally agree, man that football brings in money, can you say to me that football has a better chance than basketball of winning a national championship and the answer is no. When college football brings in the playoffs, bowl games are going to bring in less money to the schools that are in them, they are going to be equivalent to the CBI or NIT tournemants in basketball. UC will probably never make it to the playoffs ever. That's why people don't want to have playoffs because of the revenue and publicity they are going to lose from bowl games as they become less and less attractive to watch.

even if they somehow made it to a national championship game they would lose by 50. People come on this board and say how bad the Basketball teams schedule is, seriously! look at the football schedule when has UC football ever beaten a team even in the top 10 that wasn't a big east team, probably never. I'm sorry to tell you guys this but UC football is a joke if UC was in the SEC they might be able to beat Kentucky and Vanderbilt and that's about it.

Who cares if they never win an SEC game. They are making over 25 million dollars per year from their TV deal. Cincinnati is getting 2 million.

Football makes so much more revenue (on average) than basketball. You realize that Kentucky football makes more money than Kentucky basketball? Don't be dumb...oops too late.

in terms of generating revenue FB is King. Forget about titles if you want to make money football is the way. If I understand your theory correctly why not just have BB and forget about the other sports. Mdchick we haven't won a basketball title in over 50 years. As much as I hate to admit it we are long odds to do it in BB as well.

Jason-

I thought Tranghese wanted to expand media presence, which is why Depaul and Marquette (non-football) joined the same year. At the time, the greatest influence on our media value was basketball. The idea being, create the greatest basketball conference ever assembled and use this strength as leverage to build the weaker football brands. A very bold strategy that worked.

The Huggins fiasco and Kelly hiring created a perfect storm. Football fans got all giddy about making the BCS, while Mick struggled to rebuild basketball, coaching against Boeheim, Calhoun, and Pitino. Naturally, the administration shifted it's focus.

Of course, football was really benefitting from playing in a BCS conference, watered-down from previous defections. Kelly knew what was coming in that Florida game.

I am all for football. But, right now, we should be in the Big East. My guess is Gregory Williams could see the end-result, which is why he was so proactive in maintaining the relationships with the Catholic schools. Again, I am not privy to any inside information, just a hypothesis based on public reporting.

Whit and Santa did as good a job as anyone, given their being thrust into a delicate situation, with a very demanding board of directors. I wish Whit all the best. He is very impressive.

I look at the profitability and valuation of Louisville basketball (ranked #1), and say, I remember not too long ago when UC dominated Louisville. We out-recruited Louisville. Our brand was stronger (Nike jumpman). We sold out the Shoe, consistently. We dominated the in-town sports media discussion December-through-March.

Then I look at the top-15 college football programs and notice, right away, these are all college towns. No pro competition. And, I think to myself, how are we ever going to catch these programs?

We are not in Steve Jobs' garage. It's college athletics in a conservative, midwest city. History is important in making large, capital allocation decisions. History would reveal that basketball can be a very lucrative niche for us, if we focus our attention and resources.

Sorry for the lengthy post. I promise, no more from me on this very important topic.

The basketball schools were added to appease that faction of the Big East. The reason there was room for UC was because they needed football schools. The basketball only schools didn't want to be outnumbered. It's called compromise. It's also one of the reasons the league dissolved. UC would still be in CUSA if not for football.

I don't understand why football and basketball have to be in the same conference, College hockey has their separate conferences why can't every sport have their own conference. College football single handily ruined college basketball because of it. It's a simple answer to the college basketball problem.

And for all of the fans who have said who cares if they lose and still make money, that must be pretty disheartening for you guys knowing you will never win a championship or even have an opportunity to. I truly believe eventually UC basketball can have a chance to win at some point.

Off the the top of my head, we beat rutgers who was 6th, or when we went to pitt and armond binns caught the game winner they were in the top 15, or when we beat WVU. And with future games against ohio state, Miami (FL), Michigan, Nebraska, and boise State we will have the chance if we win to compete for a playoff spot. Im not saying were alabama im just we have a good football program.

Unless you were born before '62, you've never seen UC win a National Title and they only came close once in '92. It's not like UC is in the running to win it every year...

Been saying this for years and I get accused of putting down the program. A program I obviously love. Stretches of very good since then but not elite, but I love how hard the staff and players are working to get us there.

Ya but at least they have a chance every year they make the tournament, this will be the 4th year in a row we will make the dance. Football we don't even have a chance.

We beat #4 ranked Wisconsin in the late 90's, beat a highly rated Penn State team in the 80's, were a dropped pass from beating OSU the year they ran the table and won the title. We get it you're not a football fan. The university is not going to build a new basketball arena for fans that don't attend games. When fans buy in to the program and give their money then the university will act accordingly.

I love football it's my second favorite sport to watch, and anyone that watches football knows UC doesn't have a chance at winning a national championship that's all I'm trying to say.

There's no reason to speculate that a four-game play-off will make lesser bowls any less relevant than the four BCS bowls and a national tilte game did.
Going forward the AAC has secured some bowl games for the foreseeable future. These bowls won't be paying less in the future than they were in the past.

UC doesn't have to throw money into the basketball program for it to be able to compete for a title. They will spend money on the basketball when the fans give them the money to do so. The fans have given them the money to spend on football and they are doing so. Elevating the football program is priority number one at every major university as the money football generates has gone up astronomically in recent years and being viable in football is the priority in getting into a power five conference as well as the market that football team brings. Basketball money is still roughly the same. I think eventually TV money will increase for basketball but it will never reach football dollars. And again, the fans in this town don't support the basketball program they have the football program. You don't reward fair-weather fans for doing nothing. There are long-term plans to get a new arena for basketball. If we want to jump-start that we need to find dollars to do so, that starts with fans going to games and becoming donors and buying season tickets and finding corporate donors.
