GW started 6-7 from 3. Only made 5-15 after that. I'm fine with teams that live by the 3. Just keep working it inside and get their big out of the game. Well have easy 2s in the 2nd half while they cool off from 3.
Shout out to Ellis for those two CLUTCH free throws. Troy Caupain is our Mariano Rivera. A lot of room for improvement, but a win is a win. GW is going to be a tournament team.
Agree, much still needs to be worked on for this team but I do feel that the competition the Cats face this weekend is better than many of you are thinking
One thing I do believe is that this year it will be the opposition consistently wanting to slow the game down not the Cats as has been the case in past years.
Still, we were delivered as being skilled enough to not allow the other teams to do that. Dabear has the strength to do whatever he wants inside and Jenifer has the skill to dish it to him without even looking. We need to exploit that more than we do or we'll look a lot like the last few years pass-around-the-perimeter-then-pray.
Great to leave with a couple solid wins. Few things:
Our defense is very worrisome. The whole matchup zone can create a lot of confusion for other teams at times, but it also creates confusion for our guys. All it takes is one mis-step and a wide open 3 is the result. Down the road, we can't afford to give teams warmup jumpers on back to back possessions and go from a tie game to down 6 in 45 seconds. I would have liked to see Mick change things up and give GW a different look, but hey, I'm not the coach.
The three guard lineup to close the game was very effective, and Farad and Kevin weren't even hitting shots. Just another dimension we can throw out there.
I hate to bring a dose of reality to the discussion, but I will anyway. First of all, these were two "great" wins. What they proved is that when this new offense is not running smooth, we can still gut out 2 very tough wins against quality opponents. These two wins will prove to be very substantial in my opinion in the big picture. The team learned a lot in these two tough victories and we'll gain confidence from the victories.
For those handing the team over to Caupain, let's talk the facts. In two ballgames against good competition, our point guard had a grand total of 3 assists. Today he shot 5-14 from the field or 36% and for the tournament shot 40%. He has never been good at feeding the post. His assists come more from passing to the wing or corner and someone hits a three. As you saw all weekend, nobody hit those shots, thus Troy's assist totals came way down. As good as he may be as a player, and nobody has ever questioned that, as a point guard, he leaves a lot to be desired. He doesn't have the ability or creativity to make the other players better because of his inability to deliver the effective or opportunistic passes, especially to the post.
As some idiots keep asking where are the people who keep asking for Jenifer to start ahead of Caupain, that whole argument has never been about Jenifer pushing Troy to the bench. It started when some suggested that Jenifer should get about 7 minutes per game. In just a very small sample size, we've seen more great assists from that kid than we've seen in Troy's whole career to date. We've also seen some inconsistency. It's funny though how we witnessed a god-awful game from Evans today, but nobody talked much about it. But Jenifer makes a mistake and everyone is all over him. and when your team scores 126 points, and out of that total, your starting point guard delivers just 3 assists, we're calling it Troy's team, even though he also only shot 37% from the floor. Again, this is not Troy's team. That's an insult to some other great players who deserve a piece of this team leadership just as much as Troy.
There's no doubt that Troy did some good things late in both games, but he also did a lot of not so good things early in both games that may have led to the games being much closer than they should have been. Octavius performed in the same way. The tournament awarded the MVP to Octavius, not Troy, so maybe we should stop calling this Troy's team. This is more about a "team", not an individual and the more that concept rings true, the better we will be and the farther we will advance in March.
Your anti Troy, pro Jenifer agenda is tired. If it's about the team then shut up and support the team.
Your anti Troy, pro Jenifer agenda is tired. If it's about the team then shut up and support the team. Stop pinning them against each other. Troy's not flashy he's a different kind of guard than JJ, but just because he doesn't make the "spectacular" play doesn't mean he's not a damn good point guard. They are BOTH going to be vital to our success this season, and hell next season for that matter. As long as we win who really gives a shit who you thinks better. You're not the coach, maybe we should trust that Cronin guy a little. It's getting very, very, very old coming to this board and seeing TC VS. JJ in every single post/thread. Newsflash to everyone they will never be AGAINST each other, they play for Cincinnati, they are teammates, so who really cares who "the guy" is. GREAT TEAM WIN FOR THE BEARCATS (not jenifer or troy).
From my perspective uc dominated the game, gw was hot from 3 and still couldnt get more than a 4 pt lead.
No question this is troys team. Get used to the last 2 games, the rest of the year will be more like these games, rather than the first 5. Mick fooled everybody again with the 95 ppg against the cupcakes.
That fact that Jenifer has more TOs in less minutes than Troy, should really end the argument of who should start and play the most. More so, Jenifer comes in and jacks up some BAD shots. The announcer today even said, after Jenifer comes in and takes a 3, how selfish it was. Do we really want our point guard, who LT says needs to have all these assists, to be selfish? No, we don't.
Troy, Cobb, Shaq, Clark and Ellis are starting. Evans, KJ and Deberry are getting the most bench minutes. Then Jenifer. Then Moore. That's how it has been, that's how it will be. Stop this argument please.
