Bearcat Basketball Player Development

Hmm... Not sure which I'd give the edge to.
Kenyon Martin at first, was pretty much just a defensive player.
He wound up being the consensus POY.
Kelvin Gaines reminds me a little of him.
I don't expect him to reach that level, nor did I expect K-mart to.

Dnah rehto eht no, player development, really falls down to the players themselves.
Jaquon parker didn't progress much, until last year. Riding the pine set him right and if I recall, Bishop went through the same thing.
I think Cronin may be able to get more out of his kids, based on our doings in March. We've just returned the program to the level of the early 2000's though. I'll give it another year or two, before I feel comfortable with my opinion.

He always looked tense/robotic on the court. It will be interesting to see his progress over the next few years.

I think playing time and knowledge cures that. I loved his energy and athleticism. I guess because of that I hope he gets better and better. He is absolutely the worst free throw shooter I've ever seen though...lmao.

Next year will be by far the best back court Mick Cronin has ever had. Wright, Kilpatrick, Parker make Cincinnati a top 4 Big East team.

2. JAQUON PARKER, CINCINNATI

THE SKINNY: Pound for pound the toughest player in all of college basketball, the 6-foot-3 Parker was the main reason why the Bearcats were able to advance to the Sweet 16 last season. Undersized but never over matched, Parker played power forward for Mick Cronin and despite his size, had a breakout year playing out of the position. With one year left in his collegiate career, Parker will return to the perimeter next season as he’ll pair with Cashmere Wright and Sean Kilpatrick to give Cronin the best back court he’s ever had as a head coach.

...as one of Parker's biggest critics throughout his tenure, this kid deserves all the recognition he gets...

Go Bearcats!

Cincinnati center Cheikh Mbodj has dropped 25 pounds since the end of the season. Down to 237.

Sounds like Mbodj has been putting some work in since the end of the season. Let's hope he stays healthy. We're going to need some production from him. I think he's going to be up to the challenge. Mick always talked about how coachable this guy is. I'm not sure we saw the real Mbodj last year because of injuires.

He is the X factor, in my opinion. Last year Parker was the X factor and he had a year few of us could have predicted. If we can get 6-8 points and 8-10 boards out of Mbodj, we will be just fine in the post.

That's nearly a double double, I think 5-7 points 5-6 boards is about the best you can hope for out of Mbodj.
He can do that, play some defense and Jackson + Gaines improve, I think we'll be fine.

I liked what I saw from Mbodj in the summer league last year. He seemed to have some natural abilities I never really saw play out during the season save for one game where he really played well. Granted the summer league isn't exactly a showcase for things to come in the Big East, but he looked solid. Hopefully it was his injuries that plagued him and he is ready to come in and give us some good minutes this year.

Bishop became an outstanding defender, and even looked more comfortable with the ball during his senior year. Cashmere is getting there dude, and Chejk has already dropped 25 lbs this offseason..Mick's fine, dumb post.

Hearing Ge'Lawn Guyn has shown tremendous promise in Cincinnati's offseason workouts. Will be critical piece 4 Bearcats as backup PG.

G has potential to be a rare shut down guard defender. I hope he develops his game, everyone knew he would dominate workout based elements.

As much as we all appreciate fluff, Guyn didn't really show anything to indicate he could play point last year.

i think the biggest improvement we will see this year is in player leadership. that is not a knock on yancy or dion either- clearly they helped lead a turnaround that few, if any of us foresaw in mid december. but, we all know uc last year was subject to lapses and to take their foots off the gas during games. i think the leaders this year are much more focused and mentally strong players, and they are also used to winning and most importantly KNOW how to win now.

i don't think that can be understated enough that these upperclassmen now have learned how to win close and important games. i think that has been one of most difficult things for mick to establish because he did not inherit upperclassmen who knew how to win to teach the underclassmen their ways- and this is something that not only takes place on the court but also in the offseason.

Titus Rubles could be Cincinnati's X-Factor in 12-13. Skilled four man can really handle + has good defensive instincts. JUCO steal.

I forget who was saying it in one of the earlier pages a couple months ago about Mick publicly calling out JJ about not getting in the gym enough, but for what it's worth, JJ has been tweeting a lot about putting in long hours at the gym. These guys all seem to get their work in as a team AND as individuals right now. If it's just a face they're putting out there on twitter, the team as a whole is doing a good job. I think that starts with Sean Kilpatrick. He is a tireless worker and it has clearly rubbed off on the rest of this program. Extremely excited about this upcoming season. I'm just hoping I get the opportunity to see a couple games live being stuck out here in Omaha.
