Big 12

The one guy on twitter, Flugar, has been pretty spot on with this stuff and supposedly, there is a negotiation in progress to get OU and UT out of the Big 12 (probably Kansas too) in the next 18-24 months and still allow the remaining members to have some leverage in adding members and negotiating a GOR extension. We'll see. Seems a lot to orchestrate considering the Big 12 couldn't figure out how to handle this mess.

I see the arena proceeding either way but this announcement today adds some financial uncertainty to the future for sure.

When does the big east money run out? I know its soon.

Classic realist, no way I'm paying $300-400 more/year for season tickets to pay for the renovation to 5/3rd. Which are the figures currently being floated around.

Unlike the Nippert addition the renovation of 5/3 doesn't add revenue streams so most of the costs will be passed along to the paying fans.

I'll assume you're a classic message boarder who probably doesn't get impacted by that since you probably don't pay to attend games.

Anyways, I've still got my head in the sand praying that we'll be getting in at 6:30. It isn't over until Bob Bowlsby says it's over.

You weren't being a realist when you were ignoring every media outlet that pointed to no expansion.

Your swing from positivity to negativity is a bit over the top. Calm down and realize this isn't over. It is just not now.

Welcome to The University of Cincinnati, a basketball school. That whole football thing with BCS games must have just been a dream.

So you fall into the "i told you so camp"........duly noted. Of course the easy thing for everyone to say was that the Big 12 wasn't going to expand but I wanted to hear it officially before I listen to what someone who doesn't know anything has to say about it. Predicting the Big 12 wasn't going to expand wasn't exactly sticking your neck out there. Kind of like predicting the Bengals would lose to the Patriots yesterday.

There is no swing of emotion here, I'm still positive on expansion until I hear formally that it's off.

Any chance the american tries to expand? Try to get CSU, BYU, SDSU and Boise State? Our commissioner seems much savior then the tool at running the Big XII. This would give us some top flight football schools and make it harder to ignore us.

Don't know about football but highly doubt any fallout with basketball.

I figure there will be some in football and basketball is unlikely.

I forget if it was this forum or another where someone was posting that UC recruiters were actively recruiting players and telling them they would get to play in the Big 12. It also didn't say if they were recruiting basketball or football players.

I'll see if I can find it

I'm not sure that I follow. What do you mean?

Lots of schools missed out...not sure what you're missing.

As for being in this position it was the years upon years of small time athletic budget, sub par facilities, less than mediocre results, failing to take advantage of a large built in fan base, general apathy towards football... That led the school to be desperate now. We could have been west virginia, or louisville, or pitt....

Granted we had a sweet run a few years ago, but it was late and not enough.

Would those remaining teams have any more leverage (or conference power) without OU, UT, and KU than the AAC? Would we have much interest in joining it at that point? I was hoping to be a part of a P5 for 6-8 years and gain some steam. Without those 3 schools I'm not sure how much interest we would have. Too much travel...

I could maybe see a merger of sorts (for the remaining teams) and get rid of all the riff raff of both conferences. Maybe then add a couple of teams like Boise and BYU

New arena will have plenty more suites and club seating and also will feature much more "lower bowl" seating which sell at a higher price than the upper deck seats. So there is an increased revenue stream created. But the increase in better, lower seats may figure into why there will be an increase to the "average" ticket price. With that said, of course we should expect tickets to go up somewhat. Inflation alone and the added amenities don't come free. Fans complained for years and still complain about how poor the arena is and also complain why we don't put money into the program. Don't get me wrong people have the right to do whatever they want with their money but seems hypocritical when fans gripe about lack of money being spent when they themselves aren't willing to fork it out themselves. The athletic program is funded solely on donations, ticket sales and TV revenue. The big 12 would greatly increase revenue. Outside of that any more money spent on the program has to come from donors and fans. Sitting idly by and let status quo reign won't get UC to the next level competitively. UC has listened to fans and listened to Mick and has taken the steps it feels necessary to compete. At the end of the day supply and demand still reign supreme in any business, so if tickets go up it will be because people are willing to pay. If not we'll get $99 season tickets (although those went up to $125 this year).

So...

Was this why we haven't signed an agreement for where to play in 17-18?

A Xavier troll mentioned this to me on twitter and it kinda makes me worried that they havent signed an agreement yet because they wanted to see how this plays out.

I guess my question is without getting into a P5 conference how does that effect our long term viability. Are we destined to MAC status?

What makes you say MAC status? Even if we're "stuck" in the AAC, it is hands down the #6 FBS conference. There are 128 FBS Football programs, 65 in P5 if you include ND. When you consider the renovations we have completed, and take out the teams at the bottom of the P5 conferences (Rutgers, Kansas, etc), we should be a middle of the pack FBS program in the worst case scenario. Obviously we aren't there right now, which is why our focus needs to be shifted to firing Tommy Tuberville and looking for a coach who can get us back to the respectable place where we belong.

I'm skeptical but the logic is that this would be doing ESPN and Fox a favor by giving them OU and UT in another power conference. It basically signals the end of the Big 12 as a power conference when the GORs ends so, in theory, better deal for TV very long term. The benefit to the remaining Big 12 is to keep their money, bowl tie-ins, status as a Power 5, and hopefully, for their sake, lengthen the GORs deal for another 5 years or so. OU and UT want out tomorrow so if this is their path, they would be on board too.

I don't think anyone can say our school didn't put forth their best effort to get in the B12. The B12 has showed everyone how dysfunctional they are by not being able to come to a consensus on their future.

We have to keep focus on building our brand. We need to keep supporting our athletics financially and we will be ok.

Besides....we don't need a power conference for Bball success. I'm sure everyone will be happy if we are successful in Bball regardless of what conference we are in.

Jake won't the financial gap continue to widen? Schools not in a P5 are going to be at a growing disadvantage.
