Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby said new teams could be added to league by 2017. Welcome to the next wave of conference realignment

The Big 12 (really 10) announced it's going to explore adding as many as four teams through expansion. The league's board of directors has authorized commissioner Bob Bowlsby to solicit interest from potential candidates. Among the schools that might be considered potential candidates: Boise State, BYU, Cincinnati, Colorado State, Connecticut, Houston, Memphis, UCF and USF. Bowlsby said the Big 12 board "saw the path forward clearly and has taken steps. We need to look at it logistically and put a plan together."

Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby says it is "conceivable" that the league could have a vote on specific expansion candidates by September.

Spoke w/several sources about Big 12 expansion. Everyone in play. Best quote: “Cincinnati leader in clubhouse but we don’t have a clubhouse"

The Big12 is the most wildly unpredictable entity in college sports..That said my hunch is #Cincinnati is the safest bet for B12 expansion.

Oh man, this is amazing to hear but tortuous at the same time lol. I am trying to curb my enthusiasm but this has me crazy excited. Just in time for the arena to be finshed too. Our basketball schedule will be great again and our recruiting should pick up. 😁🙏

Hearing from an industry source that expansion virtual assured in Big 12. Only question is two or four teams.

4 teams will be necessary imo for the long term stability of the conference. But I believe some presidents will want 2 thinking it will keep competition and perception elite

There were so many tweets I won't be able to find them but I saw they plan on adding the teams BEFORE the 2017 football season. Also, that they will be voting this September.

We have home games against Austin-Peay and Marshall, with away games at Michigan (The Big House) and Miami Redhawks (not the U). we have nine opens dates for conference games.

2018 we play UCLA, Miami Redhawks (not the U), and Ohio Bobcats

2019 UCLA, O$U, Miami Redhawks (not the U) and Marshall

2020 Nebraska and Miami Redhawks (not the U)

As I look at Big 12 expansion and the comment about building a very competitive new conference member, it seems to me that the scheduling advantages UC. With increased recruiting benefits of Big 12, UC could be poised for a high SOS - that's a killer schedule!!!

Also, I know things change and want to advocate that we keep Miami Redhawks (not the U) on the schedule. It could be seen as our cupcake game, but I wouldn't count on it. It is one of the oldest rivalries, the tradition, the proximity, etc... though it would have to be a two for one deal at the Nip. Big time teams like Michigan, UCLA, O$U (heck even OU and Texas) don't want to play in rocking Nippert.

If, BIG IF, we go to the Big 12, do we try to get out of any non-conference contracts? Are there any AAC teams you'd like to see added to the non-conference slate? Could that be part of the exit deal?

A few things / hopes:

I think the Big 12 will go ahead and add 4 teams. This brings them more in line with the other P5 conferences. I think we're in even if they only add two, but I think we're a lock if they add four teams.

I think the four will be UC, BYU (maybe football only), Memphis and Houston. I'd love to see UConn get an invite, but I think their location and lack of football success may hold them back. Adding a Florida school is also a possibility, but I don't think that happens this round. Too far away and not enough pluses from either UCF or USF.

I'll be sooo excited if this comes together for UC, but it will be tortuous until we get the invite.

I saw on Twitter somewhere that BYU/Boise State could be football only, and UC/Memphis would be all sports. I like that idea.

Cincinnati in the Big 12 is a disaster waiting to happen...

Do you ever like anything in regards to our sports programs?

I've heard you speak glowingly about our facilities and your love for the University, but your specific comments about the programs seem to be almost universally negative.

I don't really care; just wonder how those pieces fit together.

Some people thought we were in over our heads when we joined the Big East, but that didn't show itself to be true. While there is no doubt we would struggle in the B12 initially - particularly in football - I don't know why anyone would think we couldn't compete once we had time to get established as a P5 program.

What do you care? You seemed to be firm in believing it would never happen, so I don't see any cause for concern.

I was DEAD ON when I said the ACC was not going to get raided. I was the only one saying they were fine even though Maryland had just left. I also was DEAD ON about the Big 12 until yesterday afternoon when every analyst was stunned about the news. I still find it hard to believe Cincinnati will ever play a game in the Big 12 but I am beginning to doubt that notion. It's would be a disaster because after just a few years Texas & Oklahoma will bolt and we'll be almost right back where we are now.
