Dantonio got all those Colerain kids and it's not like any of them were huge gets at the time other than the local kids were staying home. The big time recruit from that Colerain team was Mister Simpson and he went to Michigan and then busted out and eventually wound up back at UC but never played. Revels, Goodman, Mills, Byrd......none of those kids were ranked as big time recruits, but they were definitely the right recruits.

Kelly and Coombs didn't really clean up on the local circuit during their time here. They did a good job recruiting in general but the big time recruits wound up leaving home anyways. We got beat out by ND, BC, MSU and Louisville for some good local players while Coombs was here. That's why I don't get why everyone is so hung up on him. He's a good recruiter but it's also not that hard to recruit to OSU. We aren't going to compete with the schools around us for the blue chip kids, that's just not UC football and it never has been.

I liked what Fickell had to say the other day, it's about getting the right kids and not necessarily the highest rated kids. Hopefully Fickell is good at evaluating what makes the right kid vs the kid who has an impressive tape. Kelly used to talk about getting the "right kid of guy" all the time and he was good at doing it. Gilyard wasn't highly ranked, neither was Tony Pike or Armon Binns, or the Kelce's, or Pead, or DJ Woods, or Malik Bomar, ect, ect, ect....

The goal should not be to compete with OSU for players, it should be to get the players OSU wishes they would have targeted instead.

Thanks, this is exactly what I was wondering. I hope he knows how to eval talent, bc he will see really quick the talent disparity. It is easy to coach a bunch of stud players - you still need to blend them into a team of course. If we can ever get players OSU wishes they got it would be great.

Excellent post.

Fickell's strength's??

This whole search unfolding, and now watching the Fickell era unfold and play out is quite interesting.

Maybe Waite or some Buckeye guy (puke) can tell us:

Is he really a rock solid DC?? Better than Dantonio was? Can we feel confident we will have a strong D?

Can he coach up the players and game plan? Does he know his X's and O's?

Can we expect he will be able to raise recruiting??

I believe Hoosier Cat said we should keep whom has been recruiting IN. Fickelll cant stop talking about OH, but does he have connections outside of OH? He said him and his guys were hoping and praying. Who are these guys, and do they have contacts in TX, FL or GA?? or CA (little far away I know). I will assume he has PA contacts.

Since he is not currently a HC at a smaller school there really are so many unknowns. Now I can clearly see why people don't understand why Kerry Coombs names kept coming up. There would be even more unknowns about him.

Urban Meyer @OSUCoachMeyer
Great news! My rt-hand man, Kerry Coombs, is a Buckeye! In add to coordinating the SPT, he will have an expanded coordinating role on our D

So he did get a promotion. Maybe he is not as bad as everyone says?? or he will be a puppet DC, and UM loves his recruiting enough to promote him. Or UM does not want UC to gain even an inch more of traction. I am sure he would have loved Tubby stick around forever. Continue to have the whole state for himself.

Oh snap. I knew he would be eligible immediately but never said anything g bc I figured it was a huge longshot. I'd take him in a heartbeat. Good athlete and has a cannon.

At this point there isn't much to it other than Freeman following him on Twitter. I'm sure there will be interest on the UC side. Not sure the level it will be reciprocated...

Man Chad, I am just catching up and read about Zaire 10 min ago, and you broke my heart already. :D

So the new FB coach is going to have to find diamonds in the rough, evaluate who is right for the program and do it with lesser rated recruits, sounds like your favorite BB coach

and fwiw, I don't think there will ever be a UC FB player that OSU wishes they would have targeted

Feel like Zaire will end up at a major P5 school l but I'd take him in a heart beat

I agree it would be hard getting him away for those big schools that are going after him. But I think the fact that his home town is kettering Ohio not to far from Clifton has to help a bit

Lol, I'm not comparing basketball to football, they'll never be structured the same and my expectations for UC hoops will always be higher.

I bet if you went back in time OSU would have loved to spend a little more time and effort keeping Isiah Pead in Columbus. OSU is going to get a roster full of great players no matter what but a lot of those 4 and 5 star kids don't ultimately pan out, so let's make them wish they'd have targeted a few of our kids instead.

Here is a question if anyone posting here was a stud football player and was being recruited by UC or TOSU where would you chose?

When Pead came to UC, OSU had Chris Wells, Maurice Wells, Boom Herron, Carlos Hyde in 2010

Compare that to UC having Jacob Ramsey, John Goebel, Scott Johnson, they did have George Winn around there who was decent, but still no comparison to what OSU had. Pead is an outlier

Also, now UC is not in a power conference and the gap is widening
