Conference Realignment

NTS, you mentioned the other day something about the ACC and SEC picking the Big 12 apart down the line? Why would the Big 12 sit back and wait for that to become a real possibility?

Yes, once the GOR's expire (or are close to expiring)...I see the SEC and B1G (not ACC) picking apart schools from the Big 12 and ACC.

The Big 12 is clearly divided on realignment. Some of the lesser schools like Baylor, Kansas State possibly Oklahoma State are clearly at least open to the idea of expansion. The problem is the powers in the conference, namely Texas, are not so keen on expansion. The only way they'd want to add teams is if it significantly added revenue to the league...and schools like Cincinnati, Memphis and other AAC schools do nothing to contribute to that.

Texas and Oklahoma know that when the Big 12 falls apart, they will have their choice of conference. The PAC 12, SEC and B1G will all try to scoop them up. They have no worries about the future. There is no incentive for those powers to expand when they know that they'll never be in any real danger.

Think about a scenario like the Big East where first Miami(FL), Virginia Tech and Boston College were picked apart. The Big East backfilled with UC, UofL and USF and remained at 8 football members. Many were begging for expansion in adding schools like Memphis and ECU but the leadership in the Big East had no interest. Now you see that basically everyone in the Big East found a home in another P5 league and only UC, UConn and USF were left out to dry. The Big 12 will experience something similar, first Nebraska, Texas A&M and Colorado are picked off, then they refuse to expand beyond the minimum and eventually a few of the bottom schools will be left out when Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas find homes in other P4 conferences...

Now this I agree with. Big 12 NEEDS to expand to avoid becoming the the Big East. I don't know if they will because many members don't want to but I hope they do for UCs sake.

certainly could happen that way but I hope it doesn't. History does seem to indicate you may be right. Ok and Texas hold all the cards.

I hope to see the following for the next few years...

1. Ohio State keeps winning all BIG games and keeps making the playoff.

2. 1 of USC/UCLA/Arizona manages to get to the Pac 12 CG with 1 loss to face 1 loss Oregon.

3. 0 or 1 loss Alabam plays 1 loss Georgia or Mizzou in the SEC Championship game and LSU is a 2 loss team max.

4. Florida State contonues to dominate.

That would be the best chance to have the Big 12 keep getting locked out of the playoff.

I'd tell you what I'd love to see but would never happen. Join the big 12 in football only and stay in the aac or join the big East for other sports. Let's say for arguments sake that Uc teams up with central Florida or byu and gets the big 12 to allow us in for football only and take a slightly smaller percentage of money since we don't go all sports. This would allow the big 12 to expand for football purposes to get a championship game and get two decent programs. It would allow us to not have to travel our other sports that far, although honestly a lot of the aac teams are just as far. That's why I mention big East for other sports, travel would be better and would be a better bball conference. And since big east doesnt play football it could work out for them. I eouldnt like being in a confetence with xavier and not being a private catholic school could hinder things also. Again this would not happen but it would be ideal for us. Although big 12 would be fun for bball.

I'd tell you what I'd rather see happen with OSU but someone here might take me seriously and call the fbi.

Remaining in the AAC is not possible. You cannot play a sport in a separate conference if your "home" conference sponsors that sport. So, UC could not play football only in the Big 12 and remain in the AAC for all other sports because the AAC sponsors D-I football. It would be possible with the Big East, but there is a ZERO PERCENT chance they would ever invite a football playing school into the conference....

We own the Big East and waved its banner around from the top of the mountain and now we couldn't get invited to it. The world we live in folks

I'm sure there are plenty of rules to stop it, just speaking hypothetically really. To me obviously you join the big 12 if they invite you but it would not be ideal for any other sport. Honestly the big 12 could probably care less if its other sports are in a 10 vs. a 12 team conference in the grand scheme of things so inviting us football only probably wouldn't spice up the deal. Honestly though wasn't Boise state going to join big East in football only and remain in their other conference for other sports? Notre dame was allowed to be independent and be part of another conference in other sports when they were in big east, even kinda sorta now in the acc. Im not so sure that's really a rule. I would imagine the aac would have no part in letting us stay if we left for football anyway. Strictly an outside the box hypothetical since we're all hoping and wishing.

Correct, the BE very badly needed to expand football but the catholic 7 with no skin in the football game blocked any real progress for years. If all the members of a conference are not committed to each other this type of stuff happens. The small BB only schools killed the Big East, the name remains but the conference is gone. You're correct that the Big 12 may be in real trouble as long as teams have separate goals and agendas.

I get what you're saying but its completely different now. I don't want invited to it because its a pure basketball league and an average one at that.

Top-to-bottom, the Big East is very good. This year, the league is third in RPI and second in non-conference winning percentage. Last year, the league finished fourth in RPI and non-conference winning percentage. Statistically, better than the reformed ACC.

If you add UC and UConn to the Big East, it would be elite. But, those bridges appear burned. It's what happens when you chase the prom queen, while your girlfriend watches, the prom queen rejects you, and now your girlfriend (a lovely catch, you realize) does not want you anymore. Openly courting the ACC was a rookie mistake by a rookie AD and rookie President. Too much interference from a bunch of hubristic board members (one is now disbarred) that refused to get out of the way of the hired expert, Greg Williams.

With that said, the Big 12 is number one in conference RPI. When life hands you a lemon, . . .

If the Big XII gets denied by the NCAA for a CCG w/ 10 schools which seems likely, you really think that they would wait until 2024 or whenever the GOR expire with their current format. This season shows that they would have to be undefeated to make it into the CFP. Since they all play each other that means only chance for one team tops. Doubtful right now that CFP would expand to 8 in near future.

Unless a one loss team is Texas or Oklahoma...then it becomes different IMO

Since 2000

Oklahoma
1 One loss season
1 Perfect season

Texas
3 One loss seasons
1 Perfect season

6 seasons in 15 years
If they don't expand and CFP stays at 4, the Big XII must like to gamble
