Deveroes Summer League

Any idea if Kelvin Gaines will be playing, I would really like to get a look at how much he needs to develop to become a contributor to the team.

Gaines is listed on the league roster. Jackson as well. Slats played it's first game Wednesday night and only McBride, Kilpatrick and Jackson played from UC. Kilpatrick scored 28 and Jackson had 9, while McBride had I think 19. There were only 6 players listed as playing, so my guess is not everyone has shown up yet. Which honestly is typical out of the Slats team. I did not go down Wednesday, but got this info off their website. I should be there Saturday and will give my opinion on what I see.

One interesting thing to note, Bishop is not listed on the roster, so my guess is he is not in town. He has played the last three years. Also, Logan is not listed on the roster so that rumor seems to be false.

Deveroes

Thank you sir!!! and i will be looking forward to your post about the games tonight. I used to go to them all the time, thats very good cheap entertainment but i have yet to watch one this yr. I dont know why but i am very excited about Kelvin because he is about as physically as gifted as any athlete out there.

You're welcome. I'm excited to see him and Jackson. Kilpatrick, too, but I saw him last year. It sucks that Cash is hurt and can't play with them. I was hoping he and Kilpatrick could develop some on-court chemistry together. Those two very possibly will be the bulk of the offense this year.

By the way, the link to their website is in the first post of this thread. There's not a lot on it, but you can get boxscores of the games and gametimes for each day of games. You're right about the cheap entertainment. $3 for up to five hours of basketball. The venue they play at now is air-conditioned (I heard it wasn't in the past) and has a decent little concession stand. Your butt will fall asleep every 15 minutes from the seating, but all-in-all it makes for a good afternoon. You have to deal with some Xavier die-hards bad-mouthing the Cats, but whatever, that can be entertaining as well.

Made my way down Wednesday night. Kilpatrick and McBride played in the second game, and Jackson showed up late. No Gaines, which was disappointing as I just wanted to see how big and athletic he is. Now I know this is summer league and doesn't mean anything but here's a summary for those interested:

Kilpatrick looked very solid. His supporting cast was rather weak so Sean was shooting quite a bit. During warmups his shot was money, but in the game he struggled from 3. His ballhandling looked pretty good, better than I ever remembered. He made some good crossovers but once again you have to look at who was guarding him. Free throw stroke is pure.

Jackson is a player that gave maximum effort the whole time. He tried to block every shot and was crashing the boards every trip. He needs to work on grabbing rebounds but he looked pretty athletic. He made a couple nice drives to the hoop where he absolutely bullied his way. Had some aggressive drives and nice jumpstops to get into the lane and finished. He also showed some nice awareness and made some smart, headsup plays (couple touch passes to Kilpatrick for assists). Need to see more of his game to get a better assessment but UC fans will grow to love him as a player.

Biggie and Wilks played the last game but I only caught a little bit of that game. Physically, Biggie looks a lot bigger in his chest and arms. He made a couple jumpers in the post but I know that won't happen during the season. Just hoping Biggie can provide 5 minutes a game of solid defense and rebounding.

Wilks had a nice pullup 3 that showed nice touch. Other than the nasty dunks he was throwing down in warmups, I didn't see much more before I left but he went on to have a good game. They also play on the Cincy State team that has 13 players, which is a bit ridiculous for summer league.

Also saw Thomas, Parker, Dixon, and Cash in the stands.

Bishop and Davis both didn't play in the league last year so don't take Bishop's absence as meaning he won't be back. Maybe he won't (I don't know) but his absence doesn't mean anything in that regard.

You know, you're right, I was mistaken. Bishop didn't play last year now that I think about it. Davis did though. He was on a team with some X players. I don't think his team made the playoffs, so he might not of played much. You're right about Bishop's absence not meaning anything, but I think if he were down there you might could assume he would be back.

Nice write-up about Wenesday night. I remember Kilpatrick was very streaky with his shooting last year in the few games I saw him play. I do remember him hitting 6 of 7 threes, including three straight trips down the floor. I also remember seeing him settling for threes and forcing them up and not looking good at other times. Nice to hear that Jackson played hard as advertised. I will get my first look at him this afternoon.

Well I am back from today's action with a report as promised. Not much excitement but I do have some very good news to report.

First on the action. Dixon and Gates played Kenny Frease's team and Gates and Frease love going after each other. Problem is Gates didn't show up until midway through the first half and Frease didn't show up at all. I was looking forward to seeing them go at it. Neither Gates nor Dixon put up much of a show. The action is really down this year in this league.

The Slats team played the last game and got manhandled. They only have 6 players, 3 of them being UC guys. Kilpatrick came out and hit a nice three to start off the game, but then kept trying to slash. He has some nice moves and ball handling, but honestly I would rather see him shooting. He was getting frustrated by the other team and looked like he quit about midway through the second half at one point. Like I said their team got manhandled and isn't very good.

Got to see Justin Jackson play for the first time. He is very athletic but definately needs to hit the gym. He's not much bigger than Wilks body-wise although he does look like he has some strength. At this point I can't see him going up against other PF in the Big East. Also, he is very raw. You can tell he's got good instincts and attacks the ball and the rim and has a high motor, but he's over-aggressive and will commit alot of fouls. There were a couple of times where he's behind a player that grabs a rebound and he just hacks at him over his shoulder. Like I said he's raw. In time he should be a good player, I just (from what little bit I saw today) can't see him coming in a stealing serious minutes away from anybody. If he is coachable, which I'll assume he is, these are things that can easily be harnessed and corrected.

One thing I did see was after he made a mistake, Kilpatrick and McBride got in his face a little bit and calmly explained what he did wrong and he seemed to take that well. I like that out of Kilpatrick. We heard rumors he was a leader in practice. That showed me alot about him.

Now for the good news for those of you brave enough to read through my whole post. We had a Cash siting. We saw him on the Slats bench and we were waiting to see him get up and walk around (sad I know). At halftime, he got up, no limp at all, grabbed a ball, did some light dribbling exercises and hit about 9 of 10 three-pointers and went and sat down. I'll be honest that was easily the best thing of the day for me. I know Mick said it was nothing serious with his knee, but you never know the truth on stuff like that until you see it with your own eyes.

Nice to hear confirmation about Killah and about the Cash injury. Gracias.

One thing I noticed today was the build of Kilpatrick. Since last year, he has really put on some muscle. His skills are yet to be proven, but his body size is ready for the Big East. His body is going to allow him to slash to the basket, similar to his buddy Lance. Although he did not shoot a lot today, his shot looks really good (good form and follow-thru).

Yeah his shot did look good. He wasn't looking to shoot though, surprising since they were down big early. Everyone this year on every team wants to slash to the hoop. That could be why it's been so lackluster down there. Not alot of good basketball being played.

Made it to Woodward again today. Got there in the middle of the second game to see Biggie suited up.

In the second half, Biggie had 3 jumpers and 2 dunks and didn't miss from the field. He has surprised me in the two games I have seen with the touch on his jumpshot. He also had a couple blocks and rebounds. I have been pleasantly surprised with his play but once again though, you have to take all this with a grain of salt.

The next game featured Dixon and Yancy who both showed up late. Dixon entered the game and right away nailed a 3 from the corner. He was going head to head with Xavier's Mark Lyons. Lyons hit some jumpers against Dion early, but Dion got the better of him after that. He was aggressive taking the ball to the rack but often was forcing some shots. Played with some energy and I was pleased with his performance.

I was also pleasantly surprised with Yancy today. He was going head to head with old X grad Will Caudle. On one of the first possessions, Caudle took it hard at Yancy and drew a foul. After that it seemed like Yancy was ready for payback. The next two possessions Yancy actually battled for post position and was actually working for the ball. He was successful in getting position, just did not finish. He was going after rebounds, cutting hard without the ball, and threw down some behind the back dunks. He even showed a nice lefty finish in the post off the glass. Definitely a good day for Yancy.

Slats played next game. McBride hurt his leg very early in the game and didn't return.

Kilpatrick was off today from 3 again, but had quite a high scoring total. He looked good slashing and finishing around the rim and also had a nice dunk in transition.

First play of the game, Jackson drove baseline and finished with a reverse layup. He also threw down some dunks early in the game and also finished an oop from Deonta, who ran with Slats today. I still saw the same maximum effort as I did Wednesday as he went for every rebound, blocked shots, pretty much everything. Slats got smoked by the Miami team who looked very good today, seems as if they have some solid players.

Stuck around for the last game even though Tyree was the only Cat playing. It's good to see him out there competing and he contributed with about 6-8 points with clutch free throw shooting and some nice passes.

Still waiting for Gaines to show up for Slats. Any idea as to why he has been a no show?

And I will be going down Wednesday to give another report for those interested.

Regarding Gaines:
I do not want to sound like I have doubts in Micks recruiting or Gaines abilities, but I do have a concern. When hearing about these new recruits this year (Jackson and Gaines), it was said that Jackson was a banger and a high motor. It was also said that Gaines was very raw. Well after watching Jackson in the deveroes league, I see that the kid does have a motor that wont quit, but his skill set is very raw. So if Jackson is raw, how much growth/development/maturation does Gaines have to do to help this team? I never saw highlights on him, so I would enjoy anybody's input.
Go Bearcats!

Kilpatricks game is slashing and attacking and getting to the line. When he is off from 3 it is typically because he shoots the ball flat. One of the areas of focus for him this season is to get more lift on his shot. When he gets lift he typically makes shots.

My hope for Dixon is that he gets back to what made him successful in his freshman season. Attack, and take the occassional 3. His athleticism is off the charts and he has to use that to his advantage.

Let me touch on Jackson and Gaines. Jacksons worth as a frosh has always been that he will give you strong effort, rebound and play hard nose defense. He wasn't brought in to carry the team offensively. Effort and hustle is what this team needs and with it you can win games. With Gates, Thomas, Wilks and Biggie, they weren't expecting Gaines and Jackson to carry the load down low. Both can give some quality minutes and contribute in different ways. Jackson by doing what he does, and Gaines by playing D and blocking shots. I am pleased that people are reporting Gates is playing with effort.

This team will be better this season because I believe the effort will be much better. The make up and dynamic of the team is changing and for the better. My guess is you'll see a team that plays with the old Bearcat attitude.

If Guyn joins the team this season you'll have another guy that plays with a chip on his shoulder. Mick is recruiting guys like Sanders, Goodlett, Seagears, McCune, Davis, and others. I like the direction the team is headed in. Hopefully a winning season puts them over the top so these guys can be landed. Savino's ties to the NE will help as well.

Thanks for the Sunday update, Bearcat Jeff. I wasn't able to get down to it. The Miami team is good. I really liked what I saw out of Ballard on Saturday. He was owning some guys out there. The NKU team is fun to watch, too. They're probably the only two teams out there actually implementing teamwork.

Interesting that Vaughn was down there. That Slats team needs some serious help. Did they win yesterday? I can't see them making the playoffs unless they bolster their line-up.

I have been impressed with Gates' effort. You can tell he is trying to work some low-post moves. He still seems awkward doing it, but he needs to work at it. He seems to get motivated every year down there when someone takes it to him early. That's why I was mad Frease didn't play Saturday cause they always go at each other. I guess cause he knows the guys and they are local he gets motivated to not be shown up by them. Wish he could get motivated that way every game.

Slats lost by about 15 to the Miami team. They could simply not stop Miami from scoring. And I agree, the Slats roster is very weak, consisting of Kilpatrick, Jackson, McBride, Steven Stefanu (sp? from St. X) and two other players I'm not sure of who aren't very skilled. I'm guessing Cash was supposed to be running with Slats but unfortunately that won't happen.

I know from years past when the playoffs start, the teams can pick up players from the teams that don't make it, so I would hope Killa and Jackson will get to keep playing somewhere. Doesn't look like the Slats will make it's third straight finals appearance.
