Slats lost by about 15 to the Miami team. They could simply not stop Miami from scoring. And I agree, the Slats roster is very weak, consisting of Kilpatrick, Jackson, McBride, Steven Stefanu (sp? from St. X) and two other players I'm not sure of who aren't very skilled. I'm guessing Cash was supposed to be running with Slats but unfortunately that won't happen.

I guess they don't run the team the same as they used to because I always thought they put the 'Cats two best returning players (Yancy (Cash?)) on Slats to play with the incoming freshmen...

Yeah last year it was Yancy and Dixon teaming up with the freshman on Slats. This year they kept Yancy and Dixon together as well. I'm guessing they just want Kilpatrick to work with the young guys in hoping that his attitude rubs off on them, and like I stated earlier, Cash was probably supposed to be with Slats but just had surgery.

only 2 returning players can be on a team, Dixon and Gates were the two chosen for Slats, not sure which team Cash was to play for.

Actually Yancy and Dixon are not on Slats this year, but as I stated, are still on the same team together. They are playing with some Mansor Law Office or something.

Oh I did not know what team they were on. What I do know is the only 2 returning players can be on a team (example: Biggie/Wilks, Dixon/Gates, Killa/Mug)
Cash didn't play on the Slats last year. So he could return to Slats this year no problem. Kilpatrick an McBride both played for Slats last year.

Two returning players means only two players that were on the UC team last year, not their summer league affiliate.

Went down tonight for the first time this year.

Quick rundown of tonight.

Killa - very impressed, I would guess he scored 20 - 25 or so, made some deep threes, made a few jumpers, got to the basket. By far the most impressive player from UC tonight. Most importantly he wants to win, hes got that passion that alot of UC lacks.

Dixon - didnt hardly do anything, im guessing 4 points. Missed wat would have been a nice nice dunk. Shot never got going tho.

Yancy - Typical yancy, seemed to walk through the game, scored probably 8-10 two nice dunks.

Justin Jackson - first time seeing him... very thin, offensively there is not much. Defensively he looks to block every shot, fairly quick. Was impressed with his ability to push the ball and dribble very effectively in the open floor.

Agree with a lot of this. Kilpatrick was showing a lot of emotion tonight for a summer league game after a LONG contested 3 and dunk before halftime. He was definitely very into the game tonight.

Agree that it wasn't one of Dixon's best performances.

Yancy had 4-5 dunks and probably close to 15. I didn't think his performance and hustle were too bad.

Jackson had trouble doing anything on offense against Yancy but he did give Yancy some trouble on defense.

For those interested Thomas, Biggie, Bishop, and Toyloy all showed up to watch. (Toyloy eventually played and bodied up Yancy)

I agree with your comment on Kilpatrick's passion and attitude. Like his buddy Lance, Killa's desire to win and compete is evident in his play and emotions. I think that New York attitude is going to help this team and help Kilpatrick develop into a true leader for this team.
Thanks for the reports from tonights games.

Honestly, I think it's both. I think only two players on the previous years team from the same college can return. If you were on a different summer league team the previous year, but same college team you should be able to join other college teammates. Also if you played for different colleges you could return as many players as you want. That is how I understood it at least. I would like clarification if anyone knows. I find it odd that the NKU team seems to always have all it's guys every year on the same team. Maybe they switch sponsers so its not technically the same team.

I believe Cash is listed on the Slats roster this year. Someone with a program (paging nparker1) can verify that at least.

Thanks for the report. I was hoping to see the game Yancey played Jackson. So give me your opinion on JJ. I notice you said very thin -- I thought the same thing, I can't see him filling in as power forward much this year. Although, something tells me he will look like Ryan Fletcher before he leaves. (remember how big he got?) In an uptempo game you can sacrifice size for athleticism in the four spot some, but not in anything halfcourt. The Big East typically has some big guys at the four, I just can't see him going up against them anytime soon. He obviously is raw and plays a bit overaggressive which will lead to fouls. I was just hoping he was a little more polished coming in. I'm hoping he is a fast learner. He's got the instincts, if he is coachable he could be really good with a little more size.

I think your pretty spot on with alot of this from what i saw.

Heres my thoughts: I was a little concerned with his size but was very impressed with how he pushed on Yancy. Offensively in the half court could be a issue. He looked to push the ball and run ALOT. Has a quick jump, constantly trying to block everything jumping up and down constantly. I dont see him gettin too much time this year in all honesty.

With as much trouble this team had scoring last year, and looking at who we lost, people who cant score go to the bottom of the depth chart imo.

Not to get off track but Im very pumped about Killa. He has gotten bigger. Hes quick, can play the point if need be, showed nicee range (suprised me a bit) and can get up and dunk easily. Hes got that passion to win.

Yancy rocking some tats on his arm... Any chance that will make him mentally tougher!? lol

High energy guys can change a game. Think about a unit coming in on the press with maybe a Wilks, Thomas, Jackson, Killa and Cash or Parker. Even Dixon provides energy. That's what you want from your bench. You need soe bench scoring though and I'm hoping we can get some from Wilks and one of the guards.

deveroes summer league

I have seen Justin Jackson in action in a real game and he is a beast!!! the summer league is not organized enough for his style of play!!! the way i look at it if u got 2 guys 6 foot 9 going after a rebound , who comes up with it? and the answer is a player like justin jackson who is relentless. just with his rebounding alone he will score 4-6 points a game. Once you fight for a rebound and win, you are right there for a bunny or dunk!! Will he be our Savior no but will he block shots and rebound and work his tail off? yes he will and thats the type of players i want to be in a UC uniform!!! He was not the mvp of every tournament in high school for nothing. Plus he played the best of the best and still dominated. He will be fine and will find a way to contribute whether it be off the bench or starting( which i doubt it). we are not going to get top tier recruits anymore, but i will settle for really hard working guys.

I agree completely about the recruiting of an athlete who is relentless on the boards and challenging jump shots. If Mick can keep finding guys with high motors, the bearcats are going to continue to get stronger. I am excited to Jackson's athleticism and energy on the court this year.

A team with Wilks, Thomas, and Jackson in it will get destroyed down low unless Thomas put on some big time strength. Also, Wilks is HORRIBLE in the press (and pretty terrible in half court as well) so I'm not sure why everyone keeps insisting that he'd be good in a press. His instincts are terrible and his feet are slow as molasses. Presses simply do not work very well anymore in college basketball. The more Wilks plays the more trouble UC will be in. Let's hope Thomas and Gates can hold the fort down and pray that Jackson can be an adequate sub.

Yeah pretty much my thoughts exactly. As far as pushing the ball -- that's all anyone has been doing in the Deveroes League so I don't know if that's a concern or not, but it does show he likes to be out on the wing and try to do stuff off the dribble -- not what you typically think a PF would be doing.

Yeah we noticed killa got a little stronger since last year, too. I was impressed with his game last year and think he'll be a great addition. Just never know until you see him on the floor. Dixon impresses me every year down there and that hasn't translated over to real games yet.

I like and agree with what you say about Jackson. I think mine and nparker1 and living legend are just concerned if size-wise he can match up against other 4's this year. I'm sure he will develop into a beast before all is said and done. I'll be optimistic with him and hope that at least by conference play he will learn enough to be able to at least contribute some solid minutes off the bench.

Wilks worth to the press is that he will throw down nasty dunks off steals. Other than that I agree with what you said. Wilks getting major minutes at the 4 will mean bad news for UC. Thomas (who really surprised me with his toughness) and Gates need to stay out of foul trouble. If not Biggie and Jackson are going to have to provide something.
