Thank God the new facility will have concessions and restrooms on the second level for those of us that don't have the privilege of sitting in the lower seats

are you telling me that those things - market, academic quality, facilities and budget - are indicative of a program that should be in the top 15?

I think market and budget most surely are, and come 2018 facilities will be too. That leaves academic quality, which I don't really understand in terms of how that would relate to the success of our basketball program.

You mentioned in your last post that you haven't touched on what you think or expect. Would you care to elaborate on what your expectations are?

You're always the first guy jumping on these posts telling everyone how out of touch with reality their expectations are yet I don't ever hear you saying what you'd do differently. You don't seem to think very highly of the state of our athletic program yet your solution just seems to be let's all throw our hands up an accept the fact that we're mediocre. Not that I agree with your dire analysis of the state of our programs but it seems to me that someone with such a low opinion would want progress instead of complacency.

Facilities/Budget.....hmmmm, look who's #2, and this is before we spent another $100 Million on the football stadium and soon to be another $80 Million on the BB arena. Market....I'm sure Chapel Hill and Durham N.C. and Lawrence, Kansas and others are a bigger market than our city and tri-state area....lol!

Can someone color this post and the one before it "BLUE"?

Nice post L-T. I just wish those facts played a bigger role in recruiting better athletes. We have a great university in our city, certainly one to be proud of. I wish it played a bigger role in the decision kids make of where to attend college.

I absolutely loathe the people to continue to throw around the budget situation as it relates to how it handcuffs UC athletics from being competitive. It's not possible to make any less informed of a statement as a so called "fan" of our University's athletics.

The University spent the better part of the last 15 years going through a complete overhaul which included a brand new Varsity Village project. This greatly improved the experience for the student athlete and the general student populations. We have just completed a $100mm+ renovation of Nippert Stadium and we're about to embark on an $80mm renovation to the basketball arena. We pay salaries to our two highest profile coaches that put them in the Top 20 in each of their respective sports and our players have access to first class accommodations when traveling for athletic trips.

We've done all of this while taking a substantial hit in terms of revenue in recent years with the dissolution of the Big East leading to us being stuck in the AAC.

People who continue to act like this athletic department is broke and causing us to be less competitive are just refusing to face facts. You really can't argue with people who refuse to deal in the terms of reality, just let them be ignorant LT.

The Enquirer article mentions that "The multipurpose arena, which opened in September 1989, was criticized for uncomfortable seating and poor sightlines from its inception."

Presumably UC should have been aware of the seating and sight line issues. Did they proceed to add to the overall seating capacity or was it due constraints of it being multiple purpose arena?

come on, guys - let's not get carried away here.

uc's own site about its rankings starts off as follows:

In September 2015, the University of Cincinnati was again named in the Top Tier of the country's "Best National Universities," placing at 140 in the 2016 special issue. UC is ranked at 71 among top public universities.

140 overall. 71 when filtering to public schools. much improved over the past decade, which is impressive, but let's not get carried away like uc is some sort of impressive destination. uc accepts more than 3/4 of applicants.

the latest usa today data has us in the mid 50s in terms of revenue and expenses.

our football stadium may be charming, but it's small, mostly old, and still lacking in amenities for the majority of the crowd.

our basketball arena has been pretty brutal for years.

looking at the data objectively, i don't see how you can decide you fit firmly in this company:
  1. duke
  2. north carolina
  3. virginia
  4. louisville
  5. miami
  6. kansas
  7. texas
  8. oklahoma
  9. villanova
  10. indiana
  11. michigan state
  12. ohio state
  13. maryland
  14. michigan
  15. oregon
  16. ucla
  17. arizona
  18. kentucky
  19. florida

maybe some folks see us in that company because they want to be in it. i'm not objectively seeing it.

oh, and the point about the market was missed - we're talking about a market for college sports. the market point has to do with the relative importance and stature of the school's programs in their market. a saturated market like cincinnati will never provide as much support and enthusiasm for something like uc's athletic programs as is provided in many of these markets where the college is the most important, and sometimes only, game in town.

Again, our basketball program by itself is already one of the best all-time. Nobody even disputes that....but you. Add in all the other factors above to go with it and we are firmly there. Then we add in the last factor...Cronin. That is when the argument slants way back in your favor. With him running the show, nobody can even fathom that we're top 15. Nobody will even consider us potential Top 15 based on his results. We've plateaued or even declined since the sweet 16. We're going to build him a new arena to try and pump him up now. When that fails, there will be another excuse. We should play...guess the next excuse.

We're going to have a beautiful arena to go with our amazing facilities, but we'll run a mediocre coach out there and hope the results are different. We've built Varsity Village since Cronin has been here. How did that do boosting recruiting? We pay a top 20 salary to a top 45 coach. That makes a lot of sense!

Why do they keep him???? Actually your a huge part of the problem. From what I can tell your a longtime donor and season ticket holder. Why do it if the program is so miss managed. The BOT is making you look foolish by taking your money and giving what you say is a sub standard product.

L-T I'm not trying to be a smart ass by any stretch of the imagination. But you have run this gambit through two sites. Bearcat news and this one. Look at some point you have to stop writing the check. I may have to let go of my red legs season tickets after this year as much as I love going two the park. Been a fan since the late 50's. Watch or listen every night. With my family it was a way of life.

Because I'm a fan and a graduate. This is my program. Why would I let an overpaid employee of the school run me off? I still hope he wins. I'm just tired of waiting for him to do what he has shown no ability to do.....recruit and win championships.

it isn't just him L-T. It is those who write his check. Mick couldn't run the program in the ground without their support. My gosh they are fund raising and improving facilities to enhance their chances of getting invited to the big table. How or why would they make every attempt to garner every dime they can muster to improve facilities with a guy who adds little value in your opinion to the process. Is his extension his fault? Should he have taken less money? I think your anger is directed in the wrong direction.

Why would I leave something that I love Waite? Not following you. We're spending money on our school and program like drunken sailors. I stayed thru the 80s losing until we found the right coach and things took off like a rocket. It'll happen again. I'm anxiously waiting for that day to arrive.

Hope your, right but couldn't the decrease in donations be the push the BOT needs to make the change. Mick will be here at least another 2 years and if he continues to make the dance he will be here longer then that. Wouldn't you consider donations and attendance revenue two huge factors in keeping a coach employed? L-T comparing the game today is like me comparing the Reds of 2016 to the team's prior to free agency. It is two different eras. I hope your right and it does come back but I have my doubts. I'm afraid for guys our age the reality is it isn't just a game anymore it is more a business.

L-T it was 24 years between Jucker and Huggins. I think we had 4 NCAA qualifying teams in that time. Mick has 6 straight and should have at
Least 2 more. Don't see him moving on anytime soon.

Waite, donations and attendance revenue have been way down for the whole Cronin era and he survived. Mick is a convenience for now. Other priorities are taking the bulk of the attention. His time will come unless he ups his game. Nothing has changed in basketball. The good coaches still win no matter what league they are in. Xavier has figured it out and are kicking Mick's butt. Mick will never figure it out until he can convince some good recruits to come here and play in this awful offense.
