Jermaine Lawrence asks for release

In the long run this really sucks. Ellis was a good guy to have on backup though. So hopefully next year he isn't much different from what Lawrence would've been. But Damn.

This is a pretty major blow for the future. Next year would have been the perfect year for him to transform his game with plenty of playing time to be had.

Oh well, hope he has success in the future.

Really disappointed. Loved his potential. This means Stewart is still in play. Hopefully Clark and Quad can make us forget all about what could have been.

When Lawrence originally committed he said he was coming to UC to become tougher. Guess he wasn't up for challenge.

Let me get this straight, he is hurt for most of his Jr and Sr years in HS. Comes to UC, plays half a season gets injured again and then decides to transfer and sit out a season? He has barely played in 3 years.

Wow. Major blow to next season. Our starting lineup just got a lot shorter.

I think we're lucky that Ellis is the exact same size as Lawrence and has been in the program before.
Where is Lawrence going to go? A crappy team close to home where he can be "the guy"?

Not sure about a LOT shorter. I would hope we can get similar production (or even better) out of Ellis, Moore, or Clark as we did Lawrence. We could go smaller I guess but I wouldn't see why we would have to.

Hopefully this says more about Lawrence than our program. We all know we aren't getting the Kentucky HS All American 1 and dones. But Lawrence gave me hope that we could still land the big time recruits that maybe just had more work to do and might take a little longer to develop. I think the Gary Clark type recruits are right where we need to be in the future.

Good news is we landed a very similar player in Ellis that should contribute just as much if not more than Lawrence would have next year. Also there is now another available scholarship, so they have some flexibility to add a guard or frontcourt player (maybe a traditional transfer too).

Bad news is I had high hopes for Lawrence and it is sad to see one of the highly rated recruits leave after just one year. Maybe he was home sick. I wish him good luck wherever he lands and I'll be rootin for him to do well. He might be the first kid that had transferred to another DI school in a while.

There is nothing wrong with the big time recruits and if one shows interest you have to be willing to jump on it. Lawrence would have been a great recruit if he had stayed.

To me I just never saw any fire/passion out of him on the court. I wish him luck but can't understand why he would want to sit out another year.

JD3 went to another d1 school.

Hopefully he is leaving because he doesn't want to be here, and not because he doesn't want to compete for playing time. I wish him luck wherever he lands.

This sucks for so many reasons.

Barely even got to play. Was really looking forward to seeing him next season.

These are quotes taken from Zagsblog when Lawrence originally committed.

They have a great coaching staff. They worked extremely hard to get him and they’re going to make him a lot tougher, which is what he really needs to get to the NBA. He needs to get more physical and be able to take bumps and be more physical

He’ll be playing for a guy that will drive him. He’s a terrific kid, but right now he’s very passive. He’s as nice of a person on the court as he is off, which is a sure formula for failure. I don’t think he realizes how good he can be and how hard he has to work to reach that level.

“Mick Cronin will really push him and hopefully Mick Cronin’s passion for the game will be contagious.”

Hopefully Lawrence finds a home and succeeds. In the meantime hopefully he finds the fire and passion to play college hoops and stand up to challenges.

If forward Jermaine Lawrence is serious about transferring away from Cincinnati, he might want to consider letting the Bearcats know.

Scout.com analyst Evan Daniels reported Friday that Lawrence had requested a release from Cincinnati, but a source close to the Bearcats told Sporting News that such a request had yet to reach the basketball office.
