Jermaine Lawrence asks for release

Hey Cincy fans. We're very happy to have Jermaine here at Manhattan. We know he's close with a few of our recruits, so hopefully it's an easy transition.

I was just curious if someone could give us Manhattan fans a breakdown of what you saw from Lawerence this past year, since most of us haven't seen him play. Thanks!

Jermaine was a high-major recruit with a lot of potential. He was slowed down this past season playing through injuries, and we never really got to see much of that potential. Most UC fans (like myself) will tell you they weren't very impressed with Jermaine this season. It was actually kind of hard for me to believe he was a 5-star recruit on many sites. Now, how much of that is because of the injuries, I do not know. He was pretty tough on defense, but he was scared and nervous a lot on offense. Many turnovers and just looked sloppy. His jumpshot was supposed to be stellar, but he rarely hit anything beyond 10 feet. If he can get comfortable and fully recover from his injuries (he's been hurt for a portion of the past 3 years, dating back to high school), he could be a fantastic player.

Pretty much this ^. He was also playing out of his natural position. We didn't have much size, so he was asked to play defense in the post (at 6'9" 200). He held his own. We were all hoping he'd have a great opportunity to take a big jump this upcoming season. I hope he gets the waiver and can play immediately. Sitting out a full season would have to be tough.

Great, thank you for the info. It sounds very similar to another transfer who came to Manhattan two years ago, Ashton Pankey from Maryland. Big time high school recruit, who just didn't put it together his first year and needed time to develop. The one thing we really lacked going into next season was a second true big man, so it's exciting in that regard.

He doesn't want to play as a big man. That was part of the issue here. He wants to be featured like Durant is and it didn't match with his skill set. If you are expecting him to play in the post, I think you will be disappointed.

he has all of the tools to be an NBA prospect, it's just a matter of him putting all of those tools together. I think he is going to be really good for you guys, I'm very said to see him go, but I wish him all the best.

Nah, we don't. Supposedly as part of his transfer he asked to play the 3. Our system is very fluid. We had our 4 bringing the ball up for most of last season, lol.

Best of luck to Jermaine and Manhattan. Once a Bearcat always a Bearcat. I hope his Father gets well and recovers and Jermaine can go on to a prosperous career.

Wish Lawrence the best at Manhattan. I hope his father gets better and he gets a waiver to play immediately. He's a good kid.

I like Jermaine, but i have a LOT of doubts about his "tools". I realize that he will put on weight, but that kid would get abused in the NBA if he doesnt go through a major transformation. Beyond that, i really don't know what position he fits in at the pros, because he didnt look natural anywhere last season. He needs to spend time on his mid range game or he wont be any better offensively than a weaker titus rubles.

Jermaine to Manhatton.

I wish him luck. Interesting that he went to another school with a Pitino protege. The system will be similar as will be the demands to play tough defense. (I assume at least.) He came here to get tougher and in limited time didn't really show that. I don't think he was as soft as many on here portrayed him. He was undersized physically but seemed to rebound well enough considering. He didn't really look to shy away from contact either. At the same time he didn't seek it out. I would've liked to have seen him mature as a player here and reach his potential. I wish his father well and hope he makes a full recovery.

Gotta feel bad for the kid, he hasn't caught a break in a long time. With the injuries, his father's illness and all the false speculation about why he left. The kid deserves to catch a break soon. I wish him all the best and hope he's successful and that his dad beats that sick disease.

I forget if he was granted the transfer without having to sit out the year or not... Can someone remind me? If he is playing this year Manhattan has a game against Florida St. on ESPN 3 (11/15) and against Massachusetts on ESPN 2 (11/18) coming up

First exhibition game Lawrence shot 5-8 in the first half with 15 points in 11 minutes. Shot 3-4 on 3s and 2-2 free throws. 2 steals and 2 boards too.

He def looks a year older. He has filled in his figure a bit more and doesn't look so thin. I will follow Manhattan this year to see how he does.
