Lance arrested

No we wouldn't, we're not winning.

I will never understand how something like this relfects on their university for some people. It doesn't at all. University's do not teach morals. People need to wake up and get off their high moral horses. This only reflects (if true) poorly on Lance and his parents.

You don't really believe this do you? Maybe this instance only reflects poorly on Lance and not UC, but in many cases having alums get into serious trouble with the law reflects poorly on the university.

Lets say for example school A and school B have the same amount of alums playing in the NFL. The majority of school A alums have bad attitudes and are always getting in trouble with the law. The majority of school B's alums are class acts who "do the right thing." You wouldn't think that School A's alums actions would reflect poorly on the school they went to?

Just take a look at Miami U ("The U"), not of Ohio. Because of all the bad apples they have had within their football program the school has a bad perception of not being a very good school while in fact it is a very good academic school. UC's reputation was damaged bigtime in the 90's. You don't believe it? You should have talked to someone that worked out West about UC. A lot of people base their perception of the school on what they see in sports.

If VP of a company goes out and does something really dumb it is going to hurt peoples perception of the company he works for.

Lance represents UC. Just like CBJ says, rep the C.

Once you put on the jersey people will always associate you with that school.

I understand that for some reason people believe it matters and reflects upon someone's university.

What I said was I will never understand why people think that.

Especially in a case like this. He's not a current Bearcat. You wouldn't see a headline "Former UPS employee hits girlfriend" You would see "Current FedEx manager hits girlfriend"...but does it really matter where the person works?

People are always just looking for someone to blame and someone to hate. It much nicer if you can get outraged against a University team or NBA team, etc. You can carry that hatred with you for ever. If you just get outraged at the person, once in jail or out of the limelight, then you have to let that hate go.

I didn't realize Lance was a current Bearcat...sorry, I must have misread all that stuff about leaving for the draft and being selected by the Pacers.

In that case, I hope it didn't happen because we could really use him on the court.

Agree 100%. Every university in the country could probably list alumni out of the general population of students that didn't follow the straight and narrow. My guess is that in all of these situations the university is never listed as a reason that this person turned down the wrong path. But throw a jersey on someone then all of a sudden the universities take on more of a role on how that person turns out. Your dead on with your blame comment. The biggest problem with this country is that no one is ever responsible for his/her own actions, it is always attributable to someone else!

You guys are being niave if you think people dont associate players with their school. Tebow will always be apart of Florida. If Tony Pike turns out to be a superstar it would be great for the university because he is a class act.

I do agree it isnt nearly as bad when they have left. This is not a huggins situation where people were getting in trouble while in school. This is not nearly as bad and Mick won't get too much stuff for this. It isnt a good thing for us though.

What I think cincycpaw is trying to say is that he understands that former student athletes' actions affect the perception of the University. What he doesn't understand is why. Universities are not charged with teaching morality to their students...that foundation should be, and in fact is, set long before the student arrives on campus.

If someone pushes their girlfriend down the stairs it should reflect poorly on the individual, his parents, and his social situation rather than the University they attended only as long as they had to to get a job.

adrock and a few others, is it really fair that them and their actions are asociated with the university? Probably not, but at the same time, when alums become stars in their sport, the university loves to be associated with that star. You have to take the good with the bad.

The reason it's like this for athletes and pretty much no other alum or any other profession is because it's just different. Athletes in general are treated very differently then the rest of the public, and we just have to live with that. There is no other explanation IMO.

Like it or not when a university decides to offer a player a scholarship they take on the baggage, good or bad, that player will bring. UC got some bad press for offering a scholarship to Lance before he even signed. A one-time incident won't hurt a program, but this is a program that already is trying to clear its name. It is better that he's no longer enrolled at UC, but it still reflects on the reputation of the type of player you bring in. We all loved Huggins, but nobody will argue his reputation wasn't tarnished because of all the trouble the players he recruited got in. If people (media) want to they could bring up the names Nick Aldridge and Alvin Mitchell along with Lance and start to question the integrity of Mick in his recruiting. (For the record I am not one of those persons.)

Do I think all this is right or fair? Not entirely, but it is what it is. We live in a society where everybody likes to put other people down and where the media is given a green light to say anything they want and twist a story to feed the needs of the general public that eat stories like this up. Every article I've read about this mentions the University of Cincinnati in it. Guess what? That reflects on our school negatively.

This.

Thanks, exactly what I was trying to say.

That is true. However, it does reflect poorly on the university and the program, as they exercised poor judgement in admitting such an individual to their institution. If the individual also had issues prior to their entrance, the perception is that the only thing the university cares about is winning, not educating individuals. If this is a recurrent problem, as it was during the Huggins years, the university has a stain that can take years to erase.

Lance's lawyer has issued a statement. You can get it from Zagsblog.com or if you can't find it there, BCN has it.

Lance Stephenson’s attorney, Alberto Ebanks, just texted me this statement on behalf of his client.

“The allegations against Lance Stephenson Jr. are very serious. Mr. Stephenson did not maliciously, intentionally or in any other way cause harm to Jasmine Williams.

“Everyone, especially Lance, regrets that this incident occurred. We look forward to addressing these charges in the appropriate venue.”

As first reported here earlier Monday, Stephenson, a 6-foot-5 rookie guard with the Indiana Pacers, faces a preliminary hearing Oct. 19 in Brooklyn criminal court.

He was charged with assault, attempted assault, harassment, menacing and criminal possession of a weapon after pushing Williams, the mother of his daughter, down a flight of stairs early Sunday morning after she returned with two friends to her Brooklyn apartment.

Wat a baboon.

So he had a weapon on him now?

Sigh. Anybody know what it was?

Oh, I'm on a private message board with about 50 people who left CBS message board do to the trolls and other thing. These are pretty smart people who know the game very well.

I ask the question on how this looked on UC and they said it really didn't damange UC or Mick. Just thought you guys would like an outsider view on the situation. If it happen at UC yes, but he is with the pacers now.

My feeling as well.

I agree, I don't think his arrest will affect much at all with UC.

Agreed.

I tend to think it shows that our basketball administration, staff and school were able to keep Lance on the straight and narrow while at UC. He had baggage before he arrived and after he left, but nothing ever occurred while at UC.
