Anyone seen Memphis play? What challenges do they present to us?
For those that follow advanced stats and prediction websites, what is the best website to go to in your opinion that accurately can give an idea on who would win? In general? Kenpom? I know nothing about Memphis this year. I do remember when we beat them 4 times on the way to the Final Four. Those were the days

I agree. It's pathetic to read with all the bitching, bashing and crying.

I think we win this game. These next three games are big time. We rip off a nice little win streak I like our chances of getting in. One game at a time though. Lets go Bearcats

By and large this is a good forum. Lots of fans and lots of opinions. I felt the same as you for awhile and I starting using my ignore feature. Has improved by experience. They are only effective if they have a audience.

Kenpom is good if you know what you're looking at. The advantage of that site is that it does a nice job of taking the opponent noise out of the numbers. Yes, teams like Pitt will still break it early in the season by dominating garbage so efficiently, but on the whole it's not an easy system to game and not many would care to try. You can get a good feel for how and where teams beat you by looking at those numbers.

1 thing I like about the Memphis game is we are usually good aren't affected by athletic players. Being long and jumping high isn't really a big factor against us historically while some teams can't hang athletically with Memphis. My main concern is that Lawson can really score even against good defense and we have had trouble shutting down top scoring threats. Lawson can get his similar to DeCosey without being open. I think Memphis needs 20+ from someone to beat us.

Back to Memphis. I have know idea how we will play this game. We are generally outscored at FT line, give up way to many offensive rebounds, are slow with our defensive rotations on the perimeter and really are having a tough time hitting any shots. There is absolutely no one on this team I can call a difference maker. Looks to me like this team has packed it in. If that is the case the coaches and players should be ashamed of themselves. I'm done pointing the finger. It is about results. This isn't a pick up game at the YMCA.

Memphis is sitting at 3-1 and in 2nd place. We're 3-3 and in 8th place. It's almost unfathomable that we could "EVER" reach a depth of 8th place in this league at any point in the season, especially in a year where we had so much returning and our experience level is the best it has ever been under Mick.

I called the Temple game a must win. It's almost getting to the point that they are all now a must win. I don't think we recover from 3-4 to get anything better than an NIT bid. Plus, Memphis is a great program, so a win at anytime against them is good, and badly needed at this point in our season. Since Ellis is from Memphis, we should see a very motivated and aggressive player on Thursday. If he comes to play, along with Clark, our inside game will hopefully open up the outside a little more so that our shooters have some more success. For that reason, I think this will be similar to the Houston game and we win by double digits.....hopefully. Memphis is a team that seems to always rile up our fans, so here's hoping for a somewhat rowdy crowd. With the weather and the team's recent results, I hope the Cincinnati fans haven't given up completely on this season.

honest question - why is memphis a great program? or are you simply saying that in terms of name recognition, the same way a memphis fan might say the same thing about cincinnati?

ellis was way too amped up or something last year at memphis but then recovered for a really good game in the finale at home against memphis. i think he'll bring it.

I say that because we've had a long tradition and connection with Memphis, and they've always been at or near the top of every conference they've been in. Just in the last 10 years or so, they have played in a National Championship game, 2 elite 8s, one sweet 16, and have had season win totals of 31, 33, 38, 33, 33. I think they are widely viewed as always having a great program. Their problem is that they now have an average coach who recruits good, but can't coach, so their program is a little on the decline. But, big picture, I think they've always been viewed as a great program. Last year was disappointing for them. This year...we'll see.

i imagine pastner is catching a lot of the same shit from memphis fans that mick is getting here. they seem to be in a very similar spot. seems like a program on the decline to me. i'd like them to get it sorted out because it'd be nice to have some reliable cornerstone programs as long as we're stuck in this conference, but i don't see it happening.

Memphis is the perfect example of the difference between a great coach and an average coach. Calipari goes there and turns them into a national power and has them playing for the national championship and winning 30-39 games a year, all while being in a bad mid-major conference. Then comes an average coach and now you see the results.

I am sure Memphis fans are talking about Pastner. Least Pastner brings in 4/5 start recruits. He also keeps the local talent.

Mick is not on Pastner's level in terms of recruitment.
