Mick a Candidate for UNLV?

You act like Lon Krueger era never happened. They were just as good as we are under Mick just a few years ago
Krueger left for much more money.

While Kruger leaving is definitely disappointing, you can't blame the guy. The state of Nevada is struggling financially and the governor has made major cuts to academic funding, with athletics taking the biggest hit. According to Ryan Greene, who is the beat reporter for the Las Vegas Sun, the most that UNLV could have offered Kruger would have been about 1 million while Oklahoma is near Texas range with their athletic budget

Good point. The sad thing is if it's L-T's booster buddies that are the loudest and the richest, those douche bags are going to be heard more than others. After reading more cincinnati based reporting since this came out, it's painfully obvious that this guy has been treated pretty poorly since day 1 by the local fan base. You'll never convince me that he was given a fair shot. I'm not saying it would have been easy if I was a cincy native after huggs left, but the blind disapproval is mind boggling.

And L-T, i can assure you that in new england Mick is known and well respected from the basketball fans here.

Well duh! They're in our league. I would hope they know who he is.

So according to some, the silent majority of fans and boosters absolutely hate Mick's guts, think he's done a horrible job, and will throw a party at the Boathouse the day he leaves?

If that's the case, I'm so happy I moved away from Cincinnati 16 years ago. If nothing else I've gained a little perspective. Living in Houston, I can tell you that between the two primary sport Cincinnati coaches, there is one guy that garners a ton of respect down here, and one that doesn't. Feel free to guess which one doesn't. And it's not just disrespect, it's bemusement. They laughed at me the day this guy got hired and the guffawing hasn't stopped since.

Just trying to keep it real.

You're acting like Mick is walking into a dumpster fire of a program with no success in 20 years. The people there will get tired of his whining too. For his sake I hope we wins some conference titles.

LOL!!! When he gets one you and I will have to visit. I plan to locate out there anyway for 4 months of the year. Of course will stop at a Crap table or two along the way.

Oh man, if you're ever out there during conference tournament week, we'll definitely have a visit at a sportsbook.

alright, there have been at least 2 buzzer beaters and a 75 foot heave that account for 3 of those losses. Lets have a little perspective.

The 75 foot heave put the game into overtime. It didn't beat us.

this administration hired and kept Mick game fully employed to 2.2 mil a year. There are those who would argue that they didn't know what they were doing with that hire. Being a legit season in season out contender requires a commitment form the university. Not just coaches salary but facilities. This isn't the same culture as 20 years ago. Hell its not the same world as 20 years ago. But then again my experience with my hometown tells me it takes us a bit longer to grasp reality.

Waite....there is no doubt in my mind there are coaches out there that can take us to the next level in short order with the current culture. I'm not saying it would be easy to find and keep one...I'm just saying at this point I would be willing to take that chance. I will have no problem saying I was wrong if Cronin goes somewhere else and becomes a perennial title contender and we end up with a sack of potatoes.

I don't believe getting to 6 NCAA tourneys in a row is mediocrity but for this program and it's history I DO believe not having a LEGIT contender in over a decade is outside of my personal standards for the program (as lofty as they may be).

really? I work with nothing but umass, providence, syracuse, and st. bonny alums and they laugh at the majority of this stuff i read on this site. stop kidding yourself. The only place he sees so much disrespect is in his home town.

If you want to be a legit contender in todays market you beter have legit facilities and a conference to match. Being the type of program we all want will not happen no matter who we bring in without major upgrades.

and TC's layup last year put it in overtime, didn't win it for us. You're basically judging his post season success on several fluke plays.

If you don't think Mick walked into a dumpster fire, I'm not sure we can have an honest conversation. You do realize Huggs had essentially stopped recruiting months before he left the program? And then Andy Kennedy couldn't recruit due to his lame duck status. So for at least a year, Cincinnati was persona non grata on the recruiting scene. Mick's first team was cobbled together with kids that, God bless 'em, were probably MEAC caliber at best. Not only that, but he was charged with changing the culture around the program. I'm not in the program's inner circle but I know a few that are and they just shake their head sadly when talking about the 2-3 years Mick had to fight tooth and nail to rebuild the program.

What we have here is prototypical cognitive distortion. There are some who believe he's a bad coach and want him to go, and therefore invalidate any notion of positives that he brought to the program. Apparently, he inherited a windfall of talent and resources that only incompetents could've screwed up.

I'm not saying Mick has been perfect, but c'mon, man.

At least you you can admit they're lofty.

This isn't true. You must have took mick excuses 101.
oh but it is!!! I didn't take the course. I so much want him to leave. I think he should leave and the BOT should send out surveys to see who we should hire as our next coach. Of course the surveys will only be sent to the red sweater crowd. Please take the job Mick.

I think he's saying Cronin wouldn't be walking into a dumpster fire at UNLV.

So the general consensus from multiple people on here is they are ok with risking tearing apart the program again? Why is that even considered acceptable?

The problem is, by the time you admit you're wrong, Cincinnati basketball will be back at an early 1980s level. If I'm wrong, we just keep making NCAA tournaments.

All it takes is one bad hire. And from what I've heard about Mike Bohn, he's just the guy to make that hire.

I also read where someone said Cumberland would still come to UC if Mick leaves, and that Evans and Clark would stay. Anyone want to wager on that? I've got $100 right now that says at least 1 if not all of those things happen within a week of Mick's departure. If that happens, we can all kick back and enjoy those double digit defeats to UCF and a Doug Gottlieb-led Tulane.
