From cincinnati.com…pretty much a little drop of everything thats been said here by u fine gentlemen:
"So, why would Mick even consider it? (And he’s at least listening.)
Because he plays in a sub-standard gym. Because compared to the other programs in this region (including the one across town) his is under-funded. Because maybe he feels that after 10 years in Clifton, it’s time to see what else is out there. I kinda doubt that, but it wouldn’t surprise me.
There is no forward momentum at the moment, in either football or basketball. In fact, you could argue that football’s mo’ is edging backward. A disappointing season, defections in the coaching staff, a so-so recruiting class. The bar set by Dantonio, Kelly and Jones is not being met, let alone exceeded.
And football has gotten all the money.
Without an invite to the Big 12, UC’s second-class athletic status will be secured. Without that TV money, Mick and TT can’t be expected to compete with the big boys. A recent NYTImes story said Louisville’s basketball budget is $12 mil; it put UC’s at $6 million.
For years, Mick’s work at UC went underappreciated. UC basketball was dead when he arrived. It’s now made the tournament six years in a row. The resurrection was remarkable, and Mick was the reason.
But there is a sense of inertia at the moment. Some places, making the tournament is enough. This isn’t one of those places. It doesn’t help that UC plays in a stop-gap league, mostly against schools nobody around here cares about. Or that the Power 5 programs have resources not available here.
(Check out the Sweet 16. See how many teams from non-5 schools are there. It’s two, Villanova and Gonzaga.)
If you’re among those who want Mick gone, ask yourself who’d do consistently better under the same restrictions. Fact is, UC is not big time. And until it finds a Power 5 home, it never will be."
Damn, Louisville has twice the budget we do?
