Mick a Candidate for UNLV?

So the general consensus from multiple people on here is they are ok with risking tearing apart the program again? Why is that even considered acceptable?

What can we do!?!?!? If UNLV is giving him $3M and making him a Top 10 paid coach...what's your solution?

The problem is, by the time you admit you're wrong, Cincinnati basketball will be back at an early 1980s level. If I'm wrong, we just keep making NCAA tournaments.

All it takes is one bad hire. And from what I've heard about Mike Bohn, he's just the guy to make that hire.

I also read where someone said Cumberland would still come to UC if Mick leaves, and that Evans and Clark would stay. Anyone want to wager on that? I've got $100 right now that says at least 1 if not all of those things happen within a week of Mick's departure. If that happens, we can all kick back and enjoy those double digit defeats to UCF and a Doug Gottlieb-led Tulane.

Lol. Let's just hire Gottlieb!!!

And that's the real rub. Mick was able to recruit on the back of some horrific circumstances because he at least had the Big East to sell. Imagine losing a season or two and then trying to recruit top talent off a 12-21 season with the American as your selling point.

Not trying to be apocalyptic, just trying to at least drive a little perspective home amidst the giddy back-slapping of the anti-Mick crowd. If he leaves, he leaves. Joyous and hopeful are not the adjectives I'd be using to describe my feelings in that scenario, though.

If he leaves on his own there's nothing we can do but make the most of it. I'm just a little off put by those who WANT him to leave and think things will be much better without him. I don't believe that for a second.

I agree on the arena thing. Conference affiliation is overrated in college bball.

Conference affiliation has cost us at least one big-time recruit in the last 2 years. The money associated with the affiliation is the biggest thing. Can't say it is overrated. It is maybe not as important as it is in football, but, if you want to compete for National Championships, it is increasingly important with each passing year.

Let's just see how it plays out. A lot of new coaches get good recruits the first few years bc they can sell playing time and there is no negative track record. We're far from being a 12 win school...and we can thank Cronin for that. If he does leave, I'll applaud him for leaving the program in good shape. Look what a guy like Frank Haith did to Missouri.

Yeah I mean 15 of 16 S16 teams are P5 this year. But we're one of the unique programs along with Gonzaga, VCU, Wichita State, SDSU etc. So we don't totally fall into the mess that our other conference mates do. Btw was that recruit Rswle Alkins?

I wouldn't even call it leaving on his own. If the reports are true about this home town crowd and now he says "**** this its not worth it", then he was essentially driven away.

we haven't fallen into that mess because we have Mick. That may change soon.

I'm going to just let the situation play out without posting too much. If Mick leaves I have a feeling it will get a lot worse before it gets better. Not just because he leaves but I think you'd loose some big pieces of our team, and we'd have a thrown together roster for at least two seasons.

You're being a masochist if you believe this. They are offering to make the man one of the 10 highest paid coaches in the country. Money talks, Cronin listens. Not anyone's fault that UNLV is making such a hard push.

Still having a hard time buying any of this. Does he have full custody or shared custody of Sam? Even if it's full custody, should he try to leave Ohio his ex could easily petition for shared parenting with primary residence as Ohio (the state tends to lean toward their legal view of "stability" and I'm assuming the bulk of her family will still live in Ohio). So at that point Mick could easily become a summer parent with standard visitation.

Or I suppose he could finance the ex's move to Vegas with him. Anything's possible with money. But I'm dubious.

If Cronin leaves it has more to do with the University's commitment than the fans. Do I think the fans play a role? Yes, but not nearly as much as the University commiting to the program. All things being equal, if the University committed to the program to help take it to the next level, it wouldn't matter how many L-T and UCBearcats type fans are out there, Mick would be the coach here. If it is true that UNLV is offering $3 Million a year, how could you not at least listen?

Exactly!!

I won't pretend to know the situation, but I know Mick Cronin is a devoted father who puts his daughter first.

really? I work with nothing but umass, providence, syracuse, and st. bonny alums and they laugh at the majority of this stuff i read on this site. stop kidding yourself. The only place he sees so much disrespect is in his home town.

This is not unique to Mick. Check the Purdue fan sites after their loss to Little Rock. The fans that watch and care the most are going to be the most passionate and the most black and white.

Honestly - I give Mick props for rebooting the program that the university let a job-hopping anti-athletics egomaniac destroy. That said, he has failed to meet my expectations. It's time to step it up, this was his year and he failed. Lot's of unlucky bounces this year, but still a failure of a season. I believe the admin should have been looking around and creating a short list prior to the season in case Mick did fail and determine if change would be good. I applaud Mick for being smart enough to get ahead of this and maybe ditch first. If the University hasn't been doing their job for the last 12-24 months and is unable to replace Mick with an upgrade (if he leaves) then shame on them.

Actually I could really careless if he leaves. If they are not going to get in a P5 conference or upgrade facilities it will matter very little if he stays or leaves.
I guess those that don't like him would be happy. Folks we are a mid major program in todays college athletics. Without a better conference and facilities
in todays game it is what it is. Those thinking coaching will change that are fooling themselves. If you want to run with the big dogs in both basketball and football you better have those two items in place. Otherwise you better hold on to someone like Mick.
