Mick's Progress (The #'s)

BearcatTalk

Help Support BearcatTalk:

Mick has done a great job, given what he was handed. Nothing.
The Juco players did a good job of holding down the fort while Cronin began recruiting. Hell, I'd take a couple of those guys now, especially at PG.
What concerns me is the trouble Mick has in getting the players to execute his offense. Either it's the wrong players (and I remember MC saying he wanted to bring in shooters) or his coaching style needs adjusting. Trouble for Mick is that the fans are running out of patience.

Agreed.

As for bringing in shooters... I think his shooters just aren't making shots (Deonta and Larry).

Just my personal opinion but I think it has a lot to do with basketball not being their main focus (family life)

Exactly..

Players come and go but Mick remains constant. How much longer are we going to blame the players and not Mick?

- players are lazy
- players don't listen
- players don't care
- players look confused

Doesn't a majority of that fall on Mick? Now if thats how a player really is, Mick is the one recruting them...These players don't recruit Cinci

And to say just because someone bashes the coach that they are not a true fan is ridiculous. We are all true bearcat fans otherwise we wouldn't put this much time into this board. Some of us choose to go against Mick cuz we want to be better. Some feel he is doin good and can win down the road.

How long can we blame the players?? He hasnt had a full class yet! He has been here for 3 1/2 seasons!

Players probably are confused... We start two freshman a sophomore and a transfer!

Why?! WhY, can no one else see that?

We all want them to be great but when our senior isnt playing well and our two other best players are a freshman and sophomore they will be tough to coach!

Wojo would never come to cincy. IMO Coach K will leave Duke in the somewhat near future. Wojo is being groomed as the next HC of Duke.

Like it or not MC will be the coach of the cats for at least 2 more years. This athletic department cannot afford to buy him out and certainly will not be able to throw around money to lure a coach.

Coach Cronin has a lot of work to do with his in game coaching but he is progressing each season. This year is not over and with the middle of the pack being so even we are not out of this race yet. We need to all root the cats whole heartedly this weekend and hopefully get a huge win at UCONN

It's late in the season. They aren't freshman anymore!

When Mick got Lance he knew he was one and done. What else do you want? Tired of using the too young card. Kentucky starts 3 freshman!!

The talent is there, it needs to be coached accordingly. Cashmere was a top pg, yancy a top pf and lance one of the top freshman!

Yes its 3 1/2 years in. Players don't stay 5 years. They come and go every 4.

...So why dont you come at me with some facts about how mick is doing so well instead of posting stupid posts...

See post #1. I've quoted it below for your convenience. They are facts, posted by TheGreatOne, about how Mick is doing so well.

Please.

Cashmere was considered a top 15 PG recruit. Not one recruiting publication listed him as a top 10 PG, let alone "a top pg." Many listed him around 15-17 at the point guard position. Cash has always been viewed as a 4 year player. He also tore his ACL.

Yancy fit in the same boat. Most services had him between 8-17 ranked power forward in his class. Yancy has always been considered a 3-4 year player.

Lance was a consensus top 15 recruit, regardless of position.

People outside of Clifton/Cincinnati area have a clue. Many within that geographical boundry have NO CLUE as how to use an objective point of view.

8-10 in the big east back to back years (with the talent...or lack there of, UC had) is pretty solid. However, the Big East was much better last season so, to me it would be a bit of a dissipointment not to improve in the Big East. There are a lot more winnable games this season then in years past.

Having said that, people truely do not understand the situation Mick was left with. He literally had to rebuild everything. Folks who thought that would take 2-3 seasons (especially in the Big East) are clueless.

We havent had a 4 year player come and go. We have 1 true senior.

Look, I agree Mick doesn't always make me happy. I am not convinced he is the man, but I see the progress as well.

The whole freshman arent freshman anymore is a bogus comment because this is when freshman start to collapse. That is why nobody wants freshman being the leaders of their team in March. It is very very rare a one and done type of player leads their team to the title.

Of our starting lineup.

Lance - Hasnt played a full year here.
Cash - Hasn't played a full year here.
Thomas- Hasn't played a full year here.
Yancy- Has played 1 full season here.
Deonta - 3 full seasons here.

People say don't give me the too young or inexperienced excuses but it is true!

We arent finished yet btw

Well said BA1....most people don't understand the fact that our talent has improved but certainly is no where close to the top of the Big East. Cash would be on the bench at any of the other top schools at the Big East. We have pieces of talent here but nowhere near the talent levels of the top schools.

Top to bottom in the Big East we are prob 6th in total talent. We have no depth on our bench. Our team is mostly 3 stars with occassional 4 and 5 star sprinkled in.

I will harp on this issue one more time. My opinion of Mick will be fully evaluated AFTER this season and I am willing to give him the opportunity to sign his 2011 class. That will be the make or break task as the coach of UC.

Agreed.

That is why losing to Seton Hall and St Johns were so frustrating. Heck, even Louisville, Pittsburg and Syracuse we were in the game.

We arent closing games. We very easily could be 18-5 right now. We should be 16-7 if we finished.

Here are the facts my friend:

According to ESPNU TOP 100
Cashmere Wright 76th Overall - 11th PG not 15th according to Scout.com
Yancy Gates 30th Overall - 4 star recruit according to Scout.com
Lance Stevenson 12th Overall - He was born ready according to freinds

You can break it down by position all you want but the fact is they are supposedly top players in the country. Thats why Mick got them.

I'd consider them one of the top players in the country. Most teams win and dream of having that kind of talent. Not to mention DV with All Big East Honors.

Cash had a torn ACL. Sat the bench all last season next to Mick and didnt learn a thing. Even he himself said we aren't freshman anymore, It is time to step up.

Any thoughts on UK starting 3 freshman?? they are soo young and havent had time to gel, yet top 5 team in the country.

Your right. Maybe we should just do what UK does and recruit the best 3 one and done players we can...

To compare anyone who UK is tough. Plus I don't think they will go too far with those freshman come tournament time.

No one wants freshman in March.

UK is running through a terrible conference. I like their team but not ready to call them FF good yet.

That is your opinion. It isn't a X's and O's problem with Cash, it is letting the game slow down. Only way to do that is to get some playing time.

But some would rather blame Mick for cashmere never playing D-1 minutes. They want to say Mick didnt teach him anything. Come on.

UK's team is outstanding, and to compare the two schools in regards to recruiting vs on court success is beyond idiotic. Instead of getting top 15 players at their respective positions, UK got top 5 players. They are a great team, and their program was no where near the same state as UC's. Pretty ridiculous comparison.

Showing ignorance... Mick is one of the premier recruiters in the nation.

UC has more 5 star players than the entire BIG 10.

He recruited these players during our darkest time. Unfourtanately, they are freshman and sophomores but nobody seems to care.

Premier recruiter?? O im sorry, how hard was it to recruit for Bob Huggins and Rick Pitino? Please, get real, the players went to those schools for the head coaches, not for anything Mick did.

Wrong:
The correct answer is talent alone can't win you games. It all starts at the top. Your right in my opinion we have good enough talent where we should not lose to Depaul twice, Seton Hall, St Johns and even throw in UL. Also cant look past the fact that in march and feb Mick has won 7 games, 7 total.

Yes now Yancy is not ready to go pro. I wouldn't either if I had no motivation to get open when the guards play keep away from the man around the 3 point line.

The game IS moving too fast for cash right now. I agree, but what is Mick doing in practice to get him past that?

The bogus they aren't freshman thing. Have news for you. If thats what you expect from a team, they will never be successful. Guys are supposed to get better as the season goes. Its natural. They gain more experience and confidance each game. To disagree with the statement that freshman aren't freshman this late in the season is unbelievable.

Mick is the guy who found these players and targeted them. Later on is when Bob and Rick closed the deal.
