The correct answer is talent alone can't win you games. It all starts at the top. Your right in my opinion we have good enough talent where we should not lose to Depaul twice, Seton Hall, St Johns and even throw in UL. Also cant look past the fact that in march and feb Mick has won 7 games, 7 total.

Yes now Yancy is not ready to go pro. I wouldn't either if I had no motivation to get open when the guards play keep away from the man around the 3 point line.

The game IS moving too fast for cash right now. I agree, but what is Mick doing in practice to get him past that?

The bogus they aren't freshman thing. Have news for you. If thats what you expect from a team, they will never be successful. Guys are supposed to get better as the season goes. Its natural. They gain more experience and confidance each game. To disagree with the statement that freshman aren't freshman this late in the season is unbelievable.

Freshman are freshman and that is why they struggle at this point in many cases.

You want to rip on Mick about Cashmere but Cash has played very well in 3 of the past 4 games.

I assume you will not want to give Mick credit for his successes but will blame him for his failures.

So basically what your saying is Mick has an eye for talent? I suppose he has an eye for talent, now is the time to see if he can coach the talent he finds.

Agreed. It is still young talent is all I am saying. If this was 2 years into the future and everyone stayed then we would really have high expectations.

Right now, we are at 14-9 and squarely on the bubble. Time to see if Mick can push them into the tournament or if they slip away like years past.

Mick is the guy who found these players and targeted them. Later on is when Bob and Rick closed the deal.

O yea, Mick found them, because nobody ever head of that DerMarr Johnson guy, or K Sat, and I can go on an on, but i guess nobody else knew about them except for Mick.

No, but obviously Mick did something right that had them considering UC. Assistant coaches play a big part of recruiting.

Cincinnati's Cashmere Wright gets an assist from his parents - Cincinnati.com

Yea should probably give credit when credit is do. It wasn't Mick..Cash's parents had to coach him.

No, but obviously Mick did something right that had them considering UC. Assistant coaches play a big part of recruiting.

Yea your right, heres what happened:

Mick walks into a high school players home and says:

"Do you wanna come play for Bob Huggins"

and later

"Do you wanna come play for Rick Pitino"

Yea thats what Mick did. Tough job.

You really believe that all one had to do is say "do you want to play for Bob Huggins?" and they would? Like recruits just waited around and hoped for Bob Hugins, and if Bob Huggins was recruiting you it was something special so they had to go to UC?

If we are talking Mick Cronin's progress which is the title of the thread then we have to consider a few things.

YES, he took over a program in shambles.
YES, he had to recruit with what was left on the shelf (albeit, only the first year)
YES, he had to win back half the fans that were pissed about Huggins departure/debacle.

Even with those points being acknowledged, it is fair to say Mick Cronin has not progressed to the point where he is a valuable BIG EAST COACH. Being a Big East coach isn't for everybody. If Cincinnati had stayed in Conference USA with UofL, USF, Marquette and DePaul leaving for the Big East, then I would say Mick Cronin would be a good hire. Because in the BIG EAST you CANNOT do the following as a coach:

1. You cannot run an offense that looks eerie similar to the old school passing drill "the weave". How the hell is Yancy Gates supposed to get the ball when three guards dribble, pass and interchange amongst themselves.

2. If you have an athletic team, you cannot settle for a half court offense. You have a quick point guard (actually, two, Parker is pretty quick), the most athletic wing since Ruben Patterson (Stephenson) and another 6-7 guy that can run, dunk, shoot, in WILKS. Gates can move for a Power Forward. SO WHY THE HELL DON"T THEY PUSH THE BALL... Cronin definately needs a TRANSITION cordinater on his staff.

3. TAKE $HIT FROM PLAYERS...Has Cronin ever benched a guy for not listening, disrespect? These guys arent angels...Gates and Stephenson talk back, give sour looks all the time....HUGGINS (any great coach) would never take that. The players run this team and it is evident. HUGGINS wouldn't take crap from some of his best player (e.g. PETE MICKEAL (and he was a good guy) vs DePaul '00, Devin Ebanks earlier this year). But I dont really blame GATES because afterall, a post player cant touch the ball in the weave offense.

Mick is not a BIG EAST coach, therefore, it is administrations fault...they put him in a bad situation. Not one player has progressed under Cronin. Deonta has gotten worse, if you cant see that, you are blind. Gates is wishywashy. Stephenson hasnt dominated a game since early Non Conference games (and UCONN).

Bob Huggins isn't Coach K like your making him out to be.

He was very good for the program and he screwed up and then got canned in what was a hilariously poor job by UC.

Dermar Johnson and K Sat had very little to do with UC's success.

I was referring to the Kmart's and Logans of the world. Many others as well. There was a reason than Bob wanted Mick to stay around as much as he did and that Rick did everything he could to steal Mick away...

You have got to be kidding me? We were bringing in big time recruits well before Mick even graduated from UC. So no, i dont think Mick did that much. Sorry, he just didnt. Huggins and Pitino are some of the biggest names in college basketball, its not that hard to recruit for them.

Again there is a reason Huggins and Patino fought for Mick. They understood how important he was the UC's success.

Not to mention once Mick left UC they didnt have near the success.

Thoughts franchise?

"It was the end of the 2001-2002 season. The future of Bob Huggins with the Cincinnati Bearcats was up in the air.

Mick Cronin was told by an assistant close to the Cincinnati coach, that Huggins was ready to head back down that country road to his home and coach the West Virginia Mountaineers. Knowing he would not be named the Bearcats next coach, Mick Cronin had to make an agonizing decision: stay with Cincinnati and risk losing a job or take another job offer elsewhere.

He chose the latter.

No one can blame him for the decision he made to leave. Everyone thought Huggins was heading to West Virginia, including himself."

There wasn't a FIGHT over him. Mick thought Huggins was leaving so Mick decided to leave. Not like Huggins and Pitino were each trying to get Mick.

Huggins was pissed when Mick left. Patino offered him a job so fast it wasn't even funny.

When Mick got to Louisville they make FF runs and are ranked very highly. When Mick left UC they started their small decline.

Not saying Mick was the only reason but there is a reason the Huggins and Patino both wanted him. Huggins also tried to convince Mick not to go to Louisville and has always held a personal grudge against him for going to Patino.

Let me tell you what happened, because you don't even know.

Mick was suppose to be out recruiting players to come to UC. Huggins got word that Mick was at U of L talking with Coach Pitino. Once Mick got back Huggins told him to pack his sh*t and get out, even before Mick had made any decision. That is the truth and I have eye witness accounts.

You can say shit. It is fine...

I have heard otherwise. BUT even if this is the case I think you have proven my point. Pitino wanted him badly and was trying to get him out of Cincinnati for a reason! Because he is good at recruiting.

Coaching is still TBD.

Kmart? Really, Kmart? Can you PLEASE PLEASE get your facts straight. Mick graduated from UC in '97. Kenyon's first year was 96-97. Come on. Please look up info before you post. Another dumb comment from you. Get your FACTS STRAIGHT

I believe Mick was posted up on a stool in front a tv with a remote control. That being he was just a video coordinator at the time.

Must say though, if Mick walked into my living room, I would be star struck as well. Hey Mick! where is my pot of gold??
