Mick's RECRUITING

They've been recruiting him since his sophmore year of high school and he's built up, by all accounts, a really good relationship with Cronin and Savino. Highly unlikely he's going to change his mind.[/QUOTE]

Completely agree. De-commitments aren't nearly as prevelant in college basketball as they are in college football. High school football players continue to be recruited by other schools even after announcing that they have committed to a program. It's not uncommon for them to take an offical visit to another school after they have given their word to another coaching staff. In basketball, it appears that there is an unwritten rule that you don't overtly go after kids once they have committed to another program. I'm sure that through other channels some coaches continue to recruit committed kids, but not openly as in college football.

I hope UC fans do not do the same to Jermaine as they did to Lance with the unreasonably high expectations. Jermaine is far from a finished product, he is not an Anthony Davis or Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, he is not an NBA lottery pick after one year at UC, like Davis and Kidd-Gilchrist were at UK. Jermaine is not the second coming of Oscar Robertson.

I agree with you on expectations. However, I will be surprised if he doesn't at least play 12-15 minutes a game immediately. He has all the tools to be a star at some point.

Huge get for Cincinnati, who has been working on Jermaine Lawrence for a long time now. The 2013 SF can make the Bearcats an elite team.

I actually have to agree with Ralph here. It's very rare that you wind up with a freshman who comes in and dominates the game right away. By all accounts this kid is a great talent and I'm sure he's going to contribute quickly but he's still going to be young and raw. Hopefully Lawrence is exactly the type of recruit you want, a kid who's going to come in a little raw but develop his skills over the course of 2 or 3 seasons. By the time he's a JR, if he sticks around that long, hopefully he's developed into a POY type candidate and a lottery pick.

He will not dominant right away but he has the ability to contribute his first season. How quickly depends on how quickly he adjusts to D1 basketball.

That is a very tough question, because every player develops differently. Lance was OK in his time at UC, whereas Anthony Davis, Shabazz Muhammad, etc. come in and dominate. When I see Lawrence's tape and rankings, I see 10 ppg as a frosh, with 5 boards per game, and an assist or two. I think that if he stays 2 years, he will be very good. All he really is missing is 1) just needs more time to heal from his injury and 2) add 10-15 pounds. If he is as hard of a worker as it looks like he is, I think 2-3 years will be it. He definitely won't redshirt and can really add something to next years group.

Listening to part of the show it is insane how much time and effort goes into recruiting. Trying to coach and recruit is bad enough but these guys have families as well. Must be a very difficult balance to ensure all the bases are covered. Professionally and Personally. Hats off to Mick and his staff they are certainly geting the job done.

I think that's a big reason why you see college coaches in all sports trying to move into the pro leagues.

Absolutely. Money and not having to babysit are also big factors.

A little off topic but because his name has appeared in this thread as one of Micks recruits, Lance Stephenson is really playing well right now. He has had two very nice games in a row.He is playing point right now. I stopped watching the NBA on a steady basis about the time Bird and Magic were done playing but if I was to follow a team it would be Indiana. They are young and Atheletic and very creative with the ball. The win lastnight against the Bulls was a very nice withmany highlight plays.

If you were to watch Lance play now, I think you'd be really happy with the type of player he's become. Plays HARD (as he always did), willing passer, good shooter (including 3's now), great on ball defender, very coachable...Pacers have become one of my favorite teams...especially since Danny Granger got hurt, which has given more opportunity to Paul George and Lance.

I just might have to become a Pacer fan.Watched lastnight and am certainly impressed, especially with Lance and George.

For a little perspective, in Cronin's first season as head coach (06-07 season) there was concern about finding enough players for a depleted roster and reviving a program that was a train wreck. Today, we're stressed out about the possibility that one of our great recruits or current players (from a sweet sixteen team and currently ranked #17 in the country) might not have a spot because our nationally ranked recruiting class has more commitments than scholarships available.

Now we have good program problems, Mick truly has done things the right way. It's funny seeing butthurt St. John's fans say that Cronin paid to get Lawrence-if he wanted to pay to get players, he would've done it when he first came in and the program was really bad. While it has been very frustrating for fans that Mick struggled to land the big target in recent years, he took the high road and built things over time, something that you rarely see in our instant gratification society. So pumped for now and the future!

Just read something that said Epp is on a scholly this year, could that be the missing puzzle piece????

The better the recruiting class the better non conference scheduling will be. Better recruits more tv exposure and kids saying I really like the bearcats, their style of play and mick is a good coach.

We will need a better non conference schedule with all the BE teams leaving.
