Mick's RECRUITING

Coach k started at duke in 80 and went to the ncaa championship game in 86... Then you know the rest of the story.

College basketball was different back then. There wasn't such a close following of recruiting and obsession of it like there is today. Now they broadcast high school games just because a kid is thinking about going to a school. Coach K got in at the right time, it was a different game.

Small doesn't equal bad. At UC, there are tons of awful seats and it is just a horrible design. Duke's arena is small, but it doesn't mean it's bad. Plus, Coach K has had much more time to build his program-do you think he instantly got 5 star guys? Great coaches do the best with what they have-Mick pushes his guys hard so that most (not all) reach their potential. When you think about it, UC will probably be the only team in the top 4 in the BE this year that only has 1 5 star guy.

Recruits really don't give a damn how uncomfortable the seats are and how bad the sightlines are. I don't understand why people throw this out for an excuse. UC has a state of the art weight room, and overall has very good facilities. They probably could improve their locker room as that is pretty dated. They have a close, urban campus which favors a whole lot of recruits. Whether you like or dislike Cronin's recruiting, using the facilities as a reason he can't recruit is a cop out.

But money isn't an excuse. UC's athletic budget is 27 million. Duke sure as hell spends more than that and more of it goes to b-ball than it does at UC.

Where did anyone on this thread say we need all 5 stars??? What are you even talking about?

If it's not about blue chip/5 star players, what are you even talking about?

Most good teams have 3-4 star recruits and the occasional 5.
I'm sorry but if you're not expecting us to be a Kentucky or a Duke, in terms of recruits, what's the point of this thread exactly?

Not to mention arguably the biggest basketball budget in the country. What UC spends on basketball is nothing compared to the country's elite, yet the fans want him to not only succeed with less, but develop an elite program. It's actually embarrassing how ill-informed our fanbase is.

A great facility can be a plus in recruiting, but generally I agree with your assessment. The facility argument does play into the overall picture of the program though. Little to no money and an outdated arena would have a lot of coaches with positive momentum on the way out. We are lucky that Mick is a local guy, and more importantly, an alum. When fans won't show up to watch a ranked team coming off of a Sweet 16 appearance it just feeds into negative recruiting. Mick has done a lot with a little and the fans still don't seem to care, so why go there?

I am not being sarcastic here, I just don't know the answer so here goes. How does a bigger budget help a basketball team? Doesn't NCAA regulate what you can spend on athletes? We have all said that we need a new or updated arena but where does all this "extra money" get spent by other universities if it is not facilities or coaches salaries?

I'm not really trying to compare UC to Duke. Obviously Duke is on another level. But keep in mind Duke wasn't always there. You need to build from bottom up.

I don't have a problem with how Mick has been doing at UC. I think he has been doing a good job. Not great, yet. We'll see this year. But I think using the arena as a reason he isn't getting better recruits is BS. The vast majority of time kids go to a school to play because of their relationship with the coach, available playing time, and their perceived thoughts on how it will help them get to the NBA (which is based on the coach). Way further down the line is facilities.

There are just way too many negative, intolerable Huggins sympathizers pretending to be bearcat fans out there. It is ridiculous. One guy the other day told mo egger that "Mick Cronin is mike Shanahan" because he saw cash motion for mick to take him out of the game before the injury.

These "fans" only come out of te woodwork when uc loses and immediately want mick fired. They are the guys who say "were gonna lose" after the other team makes a run to pull within 4 with 10 minutes to play

Who has called for Mick to be fired? And where has anyone sympathized with Huggins? You and Ralph are by far and away the worst posters on this board and it astonishes me that you're still around...count your blessings.

Ralph is a great poster on here and his insight is greatly appreciated. He just needs to stay away from conference realignment chatter since he's always wrong. Of course I'm a good poster.

You could learn a thing or two from us

Oh ye of no sense of humor. No wonder you seem so uptight all the time and lack perspective about UC.

I knew you would come back and say it was humor, that's typical of you.

I lack perspective:

or

I think UC has lost all credibility at this point. If they lose at Rutgers, half of the believers will bail.

or maybe:

Pretty much the apathetic responses I expected. None of you expect much from this program. What a shame. The expectations for Mick & Co. are low. And his results match your expectations. Nice job fans.

UC is going to struggle mightily next season. Yancy will be gone and none of our low post guys are ready for primetime. And then you have the "can't hit the broadside of a barn" guard combo of SK (except for SK), Wright, Parker, Ellis and Guyn. Another ugly season will be upon us.

Classic Mick Cronin apologist. No wonder attendance sucks and interest in UC basketball is at a 25 year low. Apathy and excuses are becoming the death of UC basketball.

I just want to take this moment to thank Mick Cronin for the crappy non-conference schedule. Good job Mick. See you in the NIT.

What were you saying again about perspective? Wasn't your old moniker MicksDaMan? What happened to that? Still use it?

Well done Longhaul.

Chatter is the same fool that use to create multiple user names, seemingly so he could then agree with himself. That was back on the CUSA boards if memory serves.
