Mick's RECRUITING

Ron Paul!:)

Not to sidetrack this thread (....like I haven't already, my apologies), but one last comment and then back on topic.

I agree with Ron Paul's basic philosophy of personal responsibility. The one thing that scares me with him is his military philosophy. I think he believes that if we don't bother other people, they won't bother us. But there's way too much water under the bridge with the Middle East, Russia, and others that will come back to haunt us if we weaken our military and don't keep our guard up. Other than that, I'd consider voting for him. If we'd all take care of ourselves and our families, there'd be alot less for the government to have to take care of, and possibly alot of the high costs of living might go down a little too.

But back to Mick.......

We're talking about the PG situation for next year on the other board. People have questioned about whether or not Caupain is a combo-guard or PG. I believe he will be groomed as the PG of the future. And KJ and Morman will be the SG's.

Wish we could get Lawrence and he'd stay 2 or 3 years. Might have something special in a couple of seasons.

Lots of good points being made in this thread on both sides of the argument. What I don't understand is how anyone could say we don't need better recruits. Have we gotten to a Final 4 yet? Have we seriously contended for a national championship yet? If the answer is no to both of those questions then yes, we need better players.

If you're not in it to win it they why even play the game? I'm willing to bet that if you asked Mick Cronin he'd probably say that he needs to do a better job of everything. I'm sure he wants to win a Big East championship, get to a Final 4 and compete for a national championship. I just can't understand the mindset of fans who are happy with mediocre results. Based on our level of competition that's exactly what our results are. Making a Sweet 16 is great but the next step is to do better.

mplebanon..... I like his foreign policy overall, because many Republicans talk about cutting, but yet spend so much on the military. I agree that it might be a bit extreme, considering that isolationism has never really worked, but there is so much waste. The elder Bush was good with foreign policy-we can't keep staying in places for 10+ years.

Mick......
Caupain will be the PG. Strickland is very good and will surprise people. Kevin Johnson is a project-he is strong and fast but doesn't really fit a specific position yet. Morman has potential, but lets be real-he stays if Lawrence goes elsewhere, but he might be asked to look to other places if Lawrence shocks people and picks the 'Cats.

Could you knock that sh*t off? Can't talking about the Cincinnati Bearcats be something that actually doesn't involve dbags decidedly on the right or the left.

I don't find that making jokes is being seriously political.

There are some political joking that all of us can laugh at, if we're honest.

And I did get the thread back on track (after derailing it ;) )

I am not being sarcastic here, I just don't know the answer so here goes. How does a bigger budget help a basketball team? Doesn't NCAA regulate what you can spend on athletes? We have all said that we need a new or updated arena but where does all this "extra money" get spent by other universities if it is not facilities or coaches salaries?

Recruiting is the main one. The elite programs have things like a private jet to send coaches all over the country to recruit. With a smaller recruiting budget you really need to have a more concentrated recruiting area. The money also goes to other things like better travel/amenities and all newest/nicest things that attract recruits during a visit. Before last season Duke chartered their own flight and took a 13-day exhibition tour of China and Dubai. That'll get the attention of a 17-year-old. If a bigger budget wasn't advantageous then a program like Duke wouldn't spend more than 3X what we spend.

I've never been to Duke so you may be right but regardless, you said countless examples so why don't you name several more at least?

Butler seems to be building a fine program while playing at Hinkle Field House.
Oregon plays in a horrible arena and they are nabbing good recruits.
The pavillion is a pretty bad and nova gets good recruits.
Where does st john play all of its non conference home games and the non major profit conference games...not MSG... so its not affecting them.

Butler - I think Mick is building a fine program as well. UC has 67 wins and counting in the last 3 seasons.
Oregon - has some of the best facilities in the country and Nike money that gives them an unlimited budget.

St. Johns and Villanova are like 8th and 10 in terms of basketball revenue in the BEast. Cincinnati was like 12th in the last data I saw. You have to have facilities and a recruiting budget.

The reason uc is like 12th though is because we put all our money into football now

UC has the facilities with maybe the exception of the locker room. Again, their weight room is state of the art and recruits don't care if the seats at the Shoe are bad.

Recruiting budget is a different story but I thought with the recent contract extension it gave Mick a increased budget and access to a private jet for recruiting purposes.

I just read on another board that Lawrence is visiting St. Johns soon and will sit with his family and make a decision then.

The expectation is that he signs with St. Johns. Big money over there. Woo-hoo!

This is not true. Many programs have a separate practice facility and gym. UC has a floor in the Lindner center that had horrible acoustics and used to be the intramural gym when I was at UC from 99-04. High Schools in the area have nicer gyms than that. Until they recently added acoustic tiles and UC paraphernalia, you would have never thought a division 1 school practiced there. Point is, that facility is not state of the art by any means and is frankly, a bit of an embarrassment. While I hope they get that remedied soon, I get that it is not a top priority. I know the team tries to practice at the Shoe whenever possible but we all know that they can't practice there every day due to scheduling conflicts.
