Mick's RECRUITING

Of course there would be risk if Mick were to leave. We run the chance of not making the right hire and getting someone in here who fails to reach the levels that Mick has reached. That's is a very possible outcome. To me, it's worth the risk to have a chance at being a top program.

Some of you guys need to quit being so butthurt that not everyone agrees Mick is the second coming of God. I said a lot of stupid things about the guy a while back and I was totally wrong but people who act like he walks on water are just as bad on the opposite end of the spectrum.

The truth is that Mick is somewhere in the middle, probably slightly above the middle of the pack, that's all I'm saying here. To me, in my opinion, that's not good enough to satisfy my craving for UC hoops. I still continue to go to all the games, I love our kids, I support our team, but I want us to be better and believe we can and should be.

You can have your opinion. Doesn't make it right. People have an over-inflated view of this basketball program. I love UC and I think the team is, historically, a pretty good team but it is not a Top 10 program all time. Sorry. Just the truth. Mick had this team ranked as high as #8 this year. We have made good post season runs the last two years and really had tough draws in the tourney. You are not getting a better coach than Mick Cronin at UC. Frankly, I will take 25 wins and NCAA berths every year and take my chances in the tourney.

Getting to the Sweet 16 is not enough to satisfy your craving for UC hoops? We've gotten that far once in the last 10 tournament appearances! You act like Mick took over a program that was a perennial contender and he's running it into the ground with his slightly above average program. There's nothing wrong with wanting more from the program, but you still have to be realistic. This program hasn't been elite since the early 60's and it's going to very hard to get back to that level because we don't have the money that it takes to remain there.

And that's your opinion and quite frankly, very few of yours are right, in my opinion. We can do this all day if you guys want.

To get back to the original theme of this thread, does Mick need to step up his recruiting? The answer is yes!

Ooh!! BURN!! hahahahaha

I'm slightly confused why people seem to think MICK is a great recruiter. The guy can flat out coach and has the support of the city but where are the big time prospects at? I was under the impression when he got the gig he could bring in top 100 kids after some big seasons. Well, were past a few solid seasons and I'm not seeing anything special. SK is a stud but he was not highly regarded. He just worked his tail off to get where he's at. Am I the only one wondering if this talent is enough to compete for Elight Eights? Thoughts....

Per Rivals
Troy Caupain 3 stars
Kevin Johnson 3 stars
Deshaun Morman 3 stars
Jamaree Strickland 0 stars

Titus Rubles 3 stars

Jeremiah Davis 3stars
Ge'Lawn Guyn 3 stars
Cheikh Mbodj 3 stars
Jermaine Sanders 3 stars
Shaquille Thomas4 stars

Kelvin Gaines 3 stars
Justin Jackson 3 stars

I'm confused why people still believe we should be getting nothing but 5 star players. We've just come out of the dark ages, are building a solid foundation and continue to improve.
As for Strickland, why are you even counting his star rating? He injured himself and missed a whole season. He's doing prep school this year. You don't seriously believe that zero represents his ability do you? SK is a 3 star player, is his equal to Ge'lawn Guyn? It seems silly we're even having this conversation.

As for great recruiter, what is a great recruiter? What is recruiting? What tactics do you use? How do you know which ones are best? Are you sure what you're calling good or bad recruiting, isn't just a stupid truism working in hind sight?

Mick was just on with Lance, and Mick said in terms of criticism he'd just like to say "It's Bush's fault".

Hey it worked for Obama.

Can the dude from Summit play PG? Johnson I think it is?

Yeah, he can. I saw him play live 2-3 times. He seems like more of a SG, but he can play the point. I see him possibly being as solid reserve. He is so quick and can score. He isn't the greatest distributor, a PG's main job, but he definitely has skill. I see him as a guy who you could plug in and he could be a nice sub.

I liked it better when this thread was inactive

Always taking shots. This thread probably has to do with expectations. If you expect Uc to be a top 40 program then Mick is recruiting well enough. If you expect it to be a top 20 program he isn't.

Where did anyone on this thread say we need all 5 stars??? What are you even talking about?

How was that taking a shot?

I agree, he wasn't taking shots. Mick can only do what he can do-we have a dumpy arena, low funds, etc. You must be realistic, UC can't be a top 10 rogram every year. It is a process and you can't have a great team every year.

Unless this is sarcasm its just typical excuses... mediocre expectations breed a mediocre program. Whats wrong with expecting big things and great teams. There are countless examples of schools who produce great teams and draw good players with equally bad arenas etc... These other schools built their programs somehow so there is absolutely no reason why UC can't get to that level.

List them.

Should i start with dukes cracker jack box of a gym?

Small doesn't equal bad. At UC, there are tons of awful seats and it is just a horrible design. Duke's arena is small, but it doesn't mean it's bad. Plus, Coach K has had much more time to build his program-do you think he instantly got 5 star guys? Great coaches do the best with what they have-Mick pushes his guys hard so that most (not all) reach their potential. When you think about it, UC will probably be the only team in the top 4 in the BE this year that only has 1 5 star guy.

Coach k started at duke in 80 and went to the ncaa championship game in 86... Then you know the rest of the story.
