Mick's RECRUITING

We've had an OFFENSIVE system for 6 months..really??

It hasn't been just 6 months..Mick has had a system from day one. We were practically on the death penalty and it took some time. The past 4 years specifically Mick has been building to what we have become today. This incoming recruiting class fits perfectly for the system in place. You are only concerned with how many stars a 17 year old high school player is. Which is why you are not high level D-I coach. If you want to see solid basketball players grow within a system look on the court.

IT JUST WENT PERSONAL. geeze man grab a beer

We are ranked 11th in the country and we are actually debating if our head coach is a good recruiter? Wow. Rankings as far as rivals and espn are absolute smoke screens. They mean absolutely nothing. Its about evaluating talent and evaluating how they fit into the system you are trying to run. Since he has been the head coach they have increased their win total in every season. They beat Syracuse on a neutral floor last year. They were beating OSU in the second half of the sweet 16 game. He has achieved those accomplishments with the lowest athletic budget in the league. An arena that is a multipurpose gym. As well as having to recruit against many perennial top 25 programs that play in his own league. I'll take 3 stars like SK and Jaquon all day. Winners. SK is on the wooden list does it matter that he was a "3 star". Rankings are for us fans. Outside the top 25 it is a total crap shoot in terms of production that you will get from a player. Thats why the ability to evaluate and not pay attention to the rankings is so important. I obviously do agree that I would like to see us continue to get more talented players but that comes with the elevation of the program. Being ranked in the top 10 and a deep run in the tourney will do wonders for us. However I just think the job he has done with the limitations that his program has, has been nothing short of an A.

Also for the upcoming class all 4 guys are tearing it up. Troy is averaging 39pts. KJ had 18 the other night and Jamaree Strickland that "0 star" guy had 41pts and 15 boards in a game for the 5th ranked prep team in the country. Deshaun might be the best of all of them. Future is bright....

Well said, it's amazing isn't it.

Normally I'd ignore this thread but I feel the need to state this: Mick recruits to his system and he recruits a TEAM. Top 50 prospects are nice but they generally want to be THE show. That does not fit Mick's system.

I wouldn't Get too worked up. I've decimated quite a few people on here with my arguments and sometimes they respond with ad homonem attacks. Some people just can't admit they were wrong

As for your argument, you are woefully incorrect. Mick is doing a great job recruiting

Mick is employing the same recruiting tactics Huggs did when here. If you can't get 2-3 top guys, get 12 really good players so you can wear the other team down physically. So far so good.

Mick would not recuit some of the big time players if he did not want them. Lets be honest he has fallen short on getting some of the players to sign that he really wanted. I think someone said it best that Mick has a fantastic eye for talent but has lacked in nailing down big tme recruits.

Mick is doing a great job but maybe he needs to get someone on staff who is a fantastic recruiter. Having a top 80 player every year would be nice and I don't think is asking too much considering our name brand and the level of our program currently.

Relax people it is not an attack but an observation.

It is difficult to compete with UK money.

Folks, last time I checked the goal was to win basketball games not see how many 5 star recruits you can sign. Mick has improved his win percentage every year he has been here. As his reputation contiues to grow based on his job performance, recruiting will be easier. He is well on the way to accomplishing that goal. Instead of bemoaning the players we don't have try buying a ticket and cheering the ones we have. A packed 5/3 will go along way in helping Mick recruit and enhance the basketball facillities.

People want to attack Mick's recruiting skills but they refuse to acknowledge what he has been recruiting to. None of these kids remember UC in the Final Four. Shoot, they barely remember the Kenyon years. Mick is starting to get the players he wants. Yes, he has missed on some big names. That's recruiting. That's how it works. So Lavin got Obepka. Big deal. Mick has found a gem in Rubles and a more than serviceable big in Nyarsuk. He has "completed" his 2013 recruiting class in the early signing period. Of course Mick still has his eye on Henry and Lawrence and maybe a spot will open and one will decide to come to UC. That would be great but it's not necessary. Mick has not "lucked into" a good team this year. This trend will continue. Mick may get a 5 star one and done type every so often like Lance (and yes, there were still other schools recruiting Lance especially after it was determined that he would be eligible) but they will be sprinkled in with a veteran team just like the 1999-2000 team with DerMarr Johnson.

I still dont know what a "top 80" player means? Thats just based off of a recruiting analyst. Once again SK was not top 80. We are talking about the same guy who recruited Martin, Satterfield, Dermarr, Stokes, Maxiell, Logan, and Francisco Garcia. He is capable of getting big time guys but his program is just not there yet. Its getting damn close. Be patient and watch even better talent come in. Jermaine Lawrence (5 star) named us in his top 4. Im all for adding a new coach who is a good recruiter but if you think we need to do that because our head coach can not nail down a big time recruit you are way off based. We are ranked 11th in the country. I just cant believe we are actually debating this....

Jack, some people just can't stand prosperity.

Yeah no one that's complained about our lack of 4 stars has answered this question...why does it matter? We are #11 in the nation. You think UCLA is looking up at us and saying "at least our recruits were highly ranked"?

This thread is not what I intended. How many NCAA championship teams in the last 25 years did not have big time recurits and multiple PRO's on them??? Discussion over
