They already have a rivalry with Florida and this is already a nationally televised game. The SEC already has the Florida market for their network. What is the benefit of further splitting the pie if it will not bring in any more money. The SEC is looking for new markets. In the end having a good rivalry does nothing to the bottom line.

You add national interest with a resurgent FSU and school that generates big $$.

I admit to not paying much attention to the realignment but I'd have to believe that adding FSU to the SEC still adds a lot to the bottom line. FSU gets a packed house, is always on national television and is always in a premium bowl game. That adds money to the conference. As for the tv market, I don't know for sure, but FSU and Florida are two hours a part. I'd have to believe that FSU still brings a good and different market with them.

Plus FSU to me has always felt like an SEC team. Probably because their basketball program is as dirty as most SEC schools.

Good post.

FSU would love to be in the SEC. "FSU gets a packed house, is always on national television and is always in a premium bowl game." That helps FSU for sure but does nothing for the SEC. This conference expansion is all about TV sets and the subsequent revenue. FSU won't bring a lot of those because Florida is already in the SEC. FSU would add TV sets for a conference like the Big 12 and Big Ten because they don't have the Florida market.

Why isn't UC considered for the Big Ten when it would be a pretty good fit? Too many people in Cincinnati are already watching and the Big Ten network has been picked up in that market. No financial advantage to adding Cincinnati. It's the same with FSU and the SEC. If the SEC looks to expand again and school 16 comes down to FSU and a school like Cincinnati or UL, then yes, they will take FSU. Frankly, I could see Clemson or even North Carolina being added to the SEC before FSU.

This is why the SEC should look at Virginia Tech. They do everything that FSU does, but in a whole new market.

But does VT really get you that Virginia/DC market? They don't have a large alumni base and anyone who was at the Orange Bowl knows that UC fans more than doubled VT fans at that game. I think VT would be a lock if they had a larger alumni base. I really think Clemson and UNC would have a shot over VT at this point.

I dont think they have a small alumni base. They average around 66k at every home game. I wouldn't say the crowd at one bowl game is indicative of their tv viewership.

Yeah, I guess it is a little bigger than I thought. Virginia Tech as a total enrollment of 31,000 and an undergrad of 23,700. UC has a total enrollment of almost 42,000 and about 25,000 undergrad. Total enrollment includes part-time students and graduate students in addition to undergrad.

Does nothing for the SEC? Isn't there a large payout to all the teams in the conference when a team makes a bowl game? Someone could probably dig up the numbers but I thought it was a large chunk of change.

I understand what you are saying re: tv market, but I'd love to see numbers that back up all this stuff. I've read it over and over but I'd love to see what the ratings are in the different markets that might substantiate it. FSU has a large following all over the country for football. Whoever the SEC has a contract with, whether it's ESPN, NBC, etc, I'm sure airing their games nets them good ratings and wouldn't cannibalize the ratings from UF games.

In the end, having a strong conference should outweigh the tv market in the long term. FSU is a top 10 program and SEC IMO would have a lot to gain from adding them.

I am just going to stop all the realignment talk because as a fan it is useless. It is what it is, we have no control over anything and the only thing we can do is support our school by showing up. You would think some of the fair weather fans would take offense that their school UC, is looked at as a sister of the poor and rally around it. Although I do not expect that to happen I wish it would. The only thing we can do is to show up and cheer, all the complaining, what if's, and speculation won't do anything. Until other schools leave we aren't going anywhere so we might as well enjoy this season as much as we can.

Isn't complaining the point of a message board.

This might matter to the Big Ten this year since they may not fill all their bowl spots. This doesn't affect the SEC. They fill up their bowl spots every single year. Could they contract more spots in bowl games? Sure, but they will be doing that no matter who they add. They aren't going to garner more money because FSU is a possibility compared to a Clemson, UNC, VT. That's not how these negotiations take place and even if they did, the SEC would just tell them they might have a chance for a Florida, Alabama, LSU, Georgia or Auburn some years.

I don't think anyone will be enjoying this season any less. Is it disappointing? Sure. If you don't like realignment talk, what sports shows do you watch/listen to? You can't get away from it. I, personally, think it is a very interesting topic. I do contract negotiations for a living and the use of leverage is something that appeals to me on a personal level. None of us may be right on who will go where but it is still interesting (to me at least) to see what people think and why. Maybe there was a point I didn't think of that makes a lot of sense. Maybe someone posts something stupid. Who cares? I would rather see what people think and debate it a bit than sit back and just ignore it.

You can talk basketball without conference realignment because the NCAA Tourney takes care of that ultimately. You cannot talk about college football without realignment because there is no tournament (and still will be no tournament even with a "4 team playoff"). You HAVE to be in a major football conference if you want to compete on a national level. UC has progressed exponentially as a program since it was invited into the Big East and I don't think anyone wants to see it take a step back. If someone told you 10 years ago that some fans would be complaining that UC did not win either of the 2 BCS bowls it went to, would have you taken that? Absolutely. Now, the expectations have risen and that's a good thing. I want to see UC take the next step. Win a BCS game and become a player on the national stage. It is a process but in order for this to happen, UC has to get back into a nationally relevant football conference. There are enough good football players in the Cincinnati area that if UC is in the Big 12 or ACC, they will be able to compete for Championships.

The Enquirer has an article that says $160 million is needed to renovate nippert and 5/3. Saying the renovation for 5/3 arena would be $100-120 million. I am no designer or contractor but they just seems really really high to renovate. How much would it cost to just build a new arena? We all already know the two renovations need to happen but honestly have no idea where the money can come from if our city's fortune 500 companies do not want to contribute. He is the link to the article even though I don't think its a very good one, its not saying anything we don't already know.

I think UC would be better off demolishing 5/3 if it is going to cost that much and building a brand new arena in the same spot assuming they could shoehorn it in there. Maybe the cost has to do with the location and spacing as much as anything? In order to improve 5/3, they would have to essentially knock a wall down or two, wouldn't they?

Best case would have been to build a new arena where the practice fields/bubble are. A nice plaza stretching to the street would have made for a stunning gateway into campus. Then the Shoe could have been the indoor Fball practice and LAX facility.
