Next year's scholarship situation

Sorry, disagree. If we're freeing scholarships with big men who aren't developing, it's right on topic.

No, you took it off topic in attempt to bash Cronin once again. Start a new thread for that. Keep this one on topic.

Where did the rumors that Morman might not qualify come from? It's really late in the year, the coaches might already know if he's eligible or not

No he wasn't, that's complete BS. He had good games few and far between. He was terrible in some games both early in the season and late in the season and it had nothing to do with Cronin taking him out and ruining his confidence. Your agenda gets old.

Back to the original point.....Nyarsuk should go nowhere. With our depth and troubles on the inside, if the coach pushes a 7-footer out the door, then he's a fool....unless he has someone better to replace him. At the very least, Nyarsuk is a capable back-up center, and with hard work in the offseason, could become a starter. The potential is certainly there.

I don't have a problem with Nyarsuk being the one to leave (if that is the case) because you don't need 4 bigs for 1 spot. JJ is going to play the 5 next year. Mick said it himself during his last coaches show. Strickland is going to play the 5 and I truly believe he will see decent minutes. Gaines will be there in a pinch defensively. Rubles and Lawrence will play the 4 next year. JJ can play the four too if needed. Mick can go with a big lineup if he wants with JJ/Strickland at the 5, Rubles/JJ at the 4 and Lawrence/Shaq at the 3. He can go small(er) with JJ at the 5, Lawrence/Rubles at the 4, Sanders/Shaq/SK at the 3. Next year's team is going to be more athletic top to bottom and I say that because we were limited his year because of Cash's injuries. We couldn't press for long stretches. I really think Mick wants to play like Louisville did this year where we press virtually the entire game. The 2013-2014 could do that athletically. Time will tell if we actually see it.

JJ will not play the 5. Mick might have said that but at this point it doesn't mean much. He also said they'd be an uptempo team, yada yada yada. JJ simply isn't good enough or strong enough to defend the 5. Not only that he is foul prone. Even if Mick does try him at the 5 it will last for two minutes when he picks up his third foul. If this team is relying on JJ at the 5 and a freshman (big man no less who usually take longer to develop than other positions) than they are in serious trouble next year. Dave is their most competent big man, running him off would be a mistake.

You will definitely see more minutes with Jackson at the 5 next year. I think Mick would like to be able to use a big line up where everyone is equal size and can switch on to any one else.

Something like Guard, Guard, Lawrence/ Rubles, Thomas/Rubles, Jackson

Mick has said that his expectation is for JJ to put on about 20 pounds of muscle this offseason and he has told JJ that is expected of him. If he can add 20 pounds, the "not big enough" argument goes away.

You really think JJ is going to add 20 lbs this offseason? The guy is a rail and has been through his first three years. He isn't magically going to put on 20 lbs. That is very hard for people of certain build and I'm pretty sure JJ is of that build....By all means, if you really want to believe JJ is going to be able to put on 20 lbs and be able to play the center position than have at it. I just couldn't disagree more. Hell, even if he did add 20 lbs he'd probably still be light compared to most players he guards (not to mention he'd still be only 6'7") and it could hinder the only thing that makes him useful on the court, i.e. running up and down the court with abandon.

I'm not in the workouts and I am not going to guess what type of a body he has for putting on weight. On top of that, adding muscle does not mean you lose your athleticism. This is a common misunderstanding and you need to look as far as LeBron James to see that this is not true. If he puts on 20 lbs of fat, then yes, he will be affected.

Then I guess my question is why hasn't he already put on the 20lbs? I mean if he could have added 20 lbs of muscle previously w/o losing athleticism he would have already done it...Though again, even if he does gain 20lbs of pure muscle, if he is the solution at the 5 spot UC is in trouble.

Work ethic. Just a guess.

jason and long haul no way JJ is putting on 20lbs of muscles in a off season. Especially when you play a sport that requires as much running as basketball. Ain't happening! That said,I'm sure JJ will see some minutes at the 5 especially if Narsuk leaves and Mick wants to go small and athletic. Can't see it happening for extended period of time.

I heard regularly for the first 2 years he was here, that JJ doesn't apply himself to personal improvement the way he should. Mick himself said it last season. He has athleticism and quickness. It's hard to slow down with confidence when you haven't put the reps in and the confidence that goes with it. Will the light come on this offseason headed into his final go? Let's hope so.

JJ is back to the role player off the bench spot. Sanders is slow and lacks confidence and looks lost at times. Point guard should be interesting battle. I am hoping Mick does some roster turnover. We need some shooters in the worst way.

We saw players do that during Huggins tenure all the time.

I agree, no way is that going to happen and I truly hope Mick isn't expecting that. I think he says some of these things for the fans sake.

If Dave leaves JJ will have to play some at the 5 because there will be no one else to do it. That is exactly why it wouldn't be good if Dave leaves.

I agree.

No we didn't...Thinking he is going to put on 20 lbs of muscle this offseason is a bit ridiculous.

Sorry, Jason was spot on with his comment. It was common in the 90s. Just off the top of my head, Bobby Brannen and Ryan Fletcher come to mind. Their bodies were not much different than JJ when they got to UC. When they left, they were more like Swarzeneggar. Even Kenyon put on some significant weight and muscle. And that conditioning transformed all their games.
