Next years team

He needs to do more then score. He needs to board and play defense as well. At times he disappeared on the defensive end and on the glass. One game against Louisville he didn't get one rebound.

My point was he can no longer be a role player in all aspects of the game.

With all the rumors swirling about Justin Martin to UC (not sure how much weight it actually holds), I was thinking about the starting lineup next year. If we get him, who do you think the starters would be? I'd guess:

PG: Caupain
SG: Martin
SF: Shaq
PF: Lawrence
C: DeBerry

He def not a 2 but you can put him at the 4 and play a two guard two sf one center lineup

This team will not live and die with how well Shaq developes. Mick has assembled lots of moving pieces. JL,TC and KJ will all need to step up and elevate their games. Shaq has potential but to be a key cog he needs to do something this off season he hasn't done in 3 previous and that is develope Physically.

Really? Just by looking at his stats/bio, I figured he could be a stretch-2. 6'6", shoots about 4 threes per game, 5 boards, 0.3 blocks. He shouldn't ever really be down low.

Sanders will play the wing as he did last year. Very heady player who has a nice touch from behind the Arc. What he lacks in physical skills he trys to make up in Basketball savy. Will not be a starter but can make a impact off the bench. Really doesn't have the foot speed to guard some of the quicker wings the cats will see. Playing him agaist true College 4's is a mismatch. Mick will pick his spots with how he uses Jermaine.

Compared to our guys' stats last year, I think Justin Martin would start immediately.

trying to guage how effective college players will be off last years stats is very difficult. Certainly it is a starting point but is not a good tool especially for young players. For instance Lawrence played out of position all last year. For that reason I think some people are skeptical of how much impact he will have on next years team. Older college players have had the benefit of growing physically while most incoming kids have trouble adjusting to how physical the games is compared to High School. This off season will be huge for KJ,TC,Morman and Lawrence. As well as Shaq. Unless people are blind playing time next year will be a battle. TC and Guyn will compete for PG. Wings will be a war with Shaq,Sanders,KJ,Morman and Potentially some new players who mick is recruiting. If i'm Shaq I wouldn't be taking anything for granted. KJ will be a beast and my impression of him is he won't be outworked. Morman is good defensively and those guys are hard workers as well. Recruiting is centered on Guards so that means more competition. The 4 and 5 will have JL,DeBerry,Strickland and Moore battling for minutes. Gary Clark is a floating piece right now depending on how he developes physically. I see him as a athletic 4. Finding minutes will not be easy. My advice to all would be get in the weight room, work on your weaknesses offesively and make defense a priority.

I think Martin would be a very good addition. Could he start??? If he doesn't I do think he would get big minutes. He certainly would help stretch the floor.

Hell let's start it early predictions for how the team fairs and starting lineup. Not sure how there record will look but I think it will be an exciting team to watch.

My starting lineup:
PG Troy Capuain
SG Kevin Johnson
SF Shaq Thomas
PF Jermaine Lawrence
C Corentae DeBerry

I don't see DeBerry starting right away. Other than that, I like that lineup. I see Moore or Clark starting

Martin's only position would be the 3 on this team. He gives me a Sanders feel. What's a stretch-2?

If Martin isn't good enough to start then I'm not sure why you bring him in for one year when the scholly could go to someone else. Now if Mick were planning on pocketing the scholly then it wouldn't hurt to use it on Martin or another fifth year transfer. I'm not sure Martin or anybody would transfer here unless they figured to start and see significaant minutes, otherwise you would just go somewhere else.

Caupain
Thomas
Martin
Lawrence
DeBerry

I put Thomas at the 2, but not sure how he would do defensively.

In theory, that would make a killer 2-3 zone. Ridiculous length.

PG: Caupain, Guyn, Cobb
SG: Johnson, Morman, Sanders
SF: Shaq, Sanders, Morman? Clark?
PF: Lawrence, Ellis, Clark?
C: DeBerry, Ellis, Strickland?, Moore?

Am I missing anything or off anywhere? Trying to figure this out...

I am going to force a situation of trying to figure out 5,6,7 deep at each position. Some of these may not even be in the equation (I realize that) but it's just an excersize to show depth and versatility for big and small lineups.

Center...Debarry, Strickland, Moore, Lawrence, Ellis
PF...Lawrence, Moore, Clark, Ellis, Thomas
SF...Thomas, Clark, Lawrence, Sanders, Ellis, Mormon
SG...Johnson, Sanders, Thomas, Mormon, Guyn, Cobb, Caupain
PG...Caupain, Guyn, Cobb, Johnson, Mormon

How's that for some friendly competition? We haven't seen this type of depth and flexibility for ages.

We hear every year how much depth UC has. Numbers don't equate to depth. I'd rather have a stud starting 5 and no depth than an average starting 5 and a lot of depth. Considering how many haven't even played a collegiate game and a lot haven't shown (at least yet) that they are top talent (i.e. Guyn, Sanders, Lawrence), I think it's waayyy too early to call this team deep.

I think you missed the point. I didn't say we are deep with known studs. But in the absence of knowing (yet) if we really have studs or not...would you rather have less options or more at each position? That was rhetorical.

The more players you have that are potentially capable of playing each position...in the absence of proof on the court...depth of competition is really all you got until actual in game evaluation.

So I will ask in a different way...would you rather have 3 unproven players (with "potential") at every position or 2? Again rhetorical.
