Next years team

when did he ever display decent handles or a decent shot? he put the ball on the floor one time and converted and that was against new mexico. he shot 33% from the field shooting primarily 12 footers.

next year's team was going to be reliant on Caupain and Johnson taking the next step with or without Lawrence.

I don't really remember him showing off his handles because he only played center out of necessity, but from video footage he absolutely has better handles than most people his size. And he had a nice looking jump shot, he didn't make it a lot, but at the same time neither did Johnson at first and everyone kept saying to give him time and he started delivering at the end. I think it would have been the same deal with Lawrence had he stayed healthy.

Regardless, if he wants to transfer then let him transfer and that should be the end of it. Hopefully that opens up more playing time for Gary Clark from the beginning.

I'll rather have Martin over Lawrence. Don't want to see Lawrence leave though. Think next couple years with Lawrence and Ellis could be special on defense.

Tough to pinpoint who will start for Cincinnati in 14-15. Bearcats are 12 deep + have very little separation bw players. PT a daily battle.

Lawrence played plenty at the 4 this year with Jackson at the 5. He did not exclusively play the 5. He had plenty of opps 15 feet out to put it on the floor and he never did. There is a difference between telling people to be patient on a SG with great form (Johnson) with his shot than a 6'10" guy with an awful release point and poor footwork on his shot.

I wish Lawrence the best. If cooler heads prevail and he wants to come back, I would welcome that as well - clearly his best days are ahead of him and he can be a very good player if he accepts coaching and embraces who he is as a player. My point is that his 5 star reputation preceded him, and there are a lot of "skills" we believed he had/has, yet he never exhibited them once this year in games - ball handling, shooting, transition skills, etc.

I'd argue that Ellis showed more offensive flashes when he was here than Lawrence. I remember a play early his frosh year when he got out and ran the floor for a dunk in transition and had 6 pts I think in that game. Now he's continued to play for 2 more seasons and will be a 4th year JR and an inch or 2 taller and 15 lbs heavier. I'm starting to talk myself into believing Ellis can put up better #s. I wish we could see some video to at least get an idea if he's got a face up game or a lot of put backs or what.

I agree with this 100%. The guys who know the system have the advantage early on but we must put the most productive players on the court in the long run no matter who's feelings might be hurt.

I say open this sucker up...nobody's position is safe or guaranteed.

We're going to be a hockey team out their with our rotation, it seems to me Cronin is trying to revolutionize the game and have less playing time for each player and have a lot of fresh legs out their.

First post here....FYI, I will never bash or talk badly about any potential, current, or former UC player for the record....While it's certainly disheartening to "potentially" be losing our highest rated recruit in some time, I really think people get caught up in the grading sytem and hype. Obviously, I would love to have Jermaine stay but can we say we are really "losing" anything if we are replacing him with Ocatvious Ellis? Throw the whole five-star, high ceiling, NYC stuff out the window. We lose a 6-10, 205 pound forward, with some skill and athelticism who put up paltry numbers as a freshamn and has been injury prone the last two seasons of basketball, with three years of eligibility remaining. We gain a 6-10 220 pound forward, with athleticism, a first-team juco all american along with kadeem allen, sam cassell jr and put up impressive #'s last year, with 2 years eligibility remaining. At worst you can call it a wash....

I'm actually pretty excited about the future of UC basketball. The talent on next year's team is the best Mick has ever had on one team, talking overall. It's funny because a guy like Gary Clarke to me is a five-star recruit but since he is a quiet, yeoman-type kid who didn't get exposure early in his career, he is only a four-star. Kid is sick nasty. He's the most impressive recruit Mick has ever landed in my opinion. People should be excited. Real five-star talent IMO.

I like what Mick has done here. We are going to be a physically big team next year. Which we sorely need and have lacked. I think that has been a major problem for us along with putting the ball in the bucket. Mick has proven he can win with undersized teams. All Mick's teams have been very rugged, smaller teams with many guys playing out of position . With the way Mick expects guys to play with intensity on defense, depth and size are critical. Guys like Titus and Justin busting their tails so hard going up against bigger teams is difficult. That wears you down. Especially when you have no one else banging hard on the other side of the basket with you and theirs no one coming off the bench to relieve you. It was actually hard to watch sometimes because they played to the point of exhaustion but would not quit. (All always have massive respect for the way those guys played) I believe that the smaller, thin front line depth, along with the high intensity we tried to play with was detrimental to our offensive production late in the season. You could see it as the year wound down. We didn't have much left in the tank. We are going to be the complete opposite of what Mick has had these past several years. We don't have much experience but we have real size.... 6'9 270, 6'10 270, 6'10 220, 6'8 250, 6'7 215, 6'7 205. That is some size not a lot of schools have. And were not talking about Ron Allen, Dave Nyrasuk, Cheik Mboj, no offense to those young men who did all they were able to give due to exigent circumstances....At the very least you hope we can rebound at a very high level and play defense. Hopefully a couple of these guys can start to score around the rim and we could maybe do something late in the season. I'm not expecting much but let these guys go out it in practice and beat on each other, and then they go out and beat on other teams. If Mick's smaller teams were a bitch to play against I'm hopeful a team of bruisers is going to be hellacious on our opponents. Somebody tell me if I'm way off base here....

Great first post. Agree with everything you said. Stiil hope that Jermaine changes his mind and stays with the Cats.

don't you kind of contradict yourself when you spend the first paragraph talking about Lawrence's 5 star hype and people getting too caught up in the grading system...then the second paragraph talking about Clark being improperly graded and being a 5 star talent?

i think he is pointing out the systems has flaws.

No, I was pointing out the irony of the recruiting system. Jermaine has always been a blue chip talent. Hovering around a top-10 prospect at one point, Lebron James camps, big light NYC prospect. Conversly, Gary had virtually no fanfare as an underclassmen, due to limited exposure, was not until junior year when he got invited to big camps ,then he started to be on the radar and people took notice to a degree. Jermaine had nowhere near the senior year Gary did but was always a five-star based on upside, Gary was a high three star/low four who had to bust his tail off to become a solid four star. In reality there was not another player in America who had the type of rising producton Gary did especially at the end of his senior year was putting up some stupid numbers. The reason why we are talking about Jermaine Lawrence is he was the five star can't miss talent, if he werent that we would probably not be making a big deal out of it. Nobody made a huge stink about Ellis leaving, and had similar skillset and numbers than lawrence as a frosh. He ironically now may be a better player than Lawrence for us. Who knows.

I must be a close relative also because I think this kid (clark) has the whole package athletic/motor /ball skills for his size/good kid/smart/I don't know how much range he has but his stroke looks okay

NA ur up in nosebleeds. Baller speaks like he has inside knowledge. The average fan don't have that eye. People talk about Lawrence being skinny and out of position but so was 3/5 of our starting line up.
