PG next year

Guys, don't hurt yourselves trying to think. This is very simple. The players who are most ready to contribute will play. Let's not worry about starting because that really doesn't matter. Who will get the majority of minutes? It will depend on several factors:

1. Defense - This is top priority. If you can defend, you will play.

2. Shooting/Offense - Mick may be willing to play someone strictly for offensive purposes as long as their defense isn't horrendous. Basically, think of +/- in hockey.

3. Turnovers - This is going to be more important than shooting for the PG spot but falls here for everyone else.

4. Hustle - If you play hard and hustle, there will be minutes for you. How many will depend on the previous three points above.

See, wasn't that easy? j/k Busting some balls this morning. The point is, don't get carried away with all this freshman vs. non-freshmen thing. Guys improve in the off-season and until we see what they can do, we really have no idea how the lineup will shake out. I think it is too early to write off Guyn. We haven't seen the best from him yet. I also think it is too early to expect ANY of the freshmen to come in and start from day 1. Lawrence is the one most likely to contribute right away but don't be surprised or disappointed if Lawrence takes some time to adjust to the college game. I think this incoming class is exciting and should be a great foundation for the future. Let's not get crazy and anoint these guys as starters (or playing major minutes consistently) from day 1.
certainly yor correct but speculating and trying to determine the outcome of sporting events and team make up is why we all post here.

personally, i have been critical of Guyn from day 1...however, for this coming year and next, i hope Guyn and whoever else can run the point, continuously battle/compete to be the starting PG...i dont want to see someone named starting PG before the season gets underway...lets let these kids battle it out and prove themselves to be worthy of starting...and regardless of who wins the competition, i just want to see a PG run this offense, be a leader, and win games...

I think we will have to wait 1-2 years to see a talented point guard run the offense and be a leader. This freshman class seems special. I don't think guyn is going to get it done at a high level. I hope he proves me wrong.

I hope he proves all of us wrong. I think we will know within the first 4 or 5 games what we can expect from Guyn. Hopefully he comes out and is very efficient.

Assuming this freshman class has the ability to get some good minutes this season, this could be the year Mick has to go with the press. Unless Guyn becomes one heck of a player, depth might be the best weapon we have at the PG spot. We have enough wing players to do it. JJ would be great as a 5 in the press but I don't know about Strickland and definitely don't think Dave can do it.

Guyn doesn't need to score 10-12 points a game. He needs to score 6-8, manage the game and be able to penetrate. He shoots good from the ft line. Can he hit the open man? Can he drive, draw and kick? Can he avoid STUPID fouls!? I too hope he proves everyone wrong. I just like how had he plays and like to see that rewarded.

i was impressed with Guyn's maturation and growth as the year went along last year...i agree with Jeff...my biggest critique on Guyn is lack of self control...absolutely love his motor, tenacity, and heart...he just needs to continue to learn how to reign it in and develop control...i am not aware of Caupain's defensive style, but he definitely has his work cut out to provide the pressure the Guyn brings to the floor...

again, i hope Guyn continues to mature and develop, and i hope these freshman can establish a winning foundation for years to come...i am excited for the season to start...then we will have some answers

Jeff, think your correct about the amount of scoring we need from the PG. Offensively I look for SK,Thomas,Rubles and Lawrence to provide the bulk of the points. That said, nothing Guyn has shown me in his two years lead me to believe he is a starting caliber PG. I like him off the bench but not getting the majority of the minutes. His decision making is very suspect. Of course if he improves over the summer and the fact he will be competing against young inexperienced players for the job may tilt the decison in his favor. I'm hoping one of the new guys can assume the role. Really don't think Guyn has the ability to make others around him better which is a huge responsibilty of the PG.

Last 10 games he shot 10-24, played a grand total of 71 minutes, 2 assists, 3 TO, played less than 10 minutes in 6 of the last 7 games, I don't know how you saw any development

Really don't think that either Davis or Guyn are suited skill wise to be the PG. Davis doesn't have the handle or quickness to match up with other PG's and we have all seen what Guyn brings to the table.Another troubling developement is that Mick didn't land a true PG for this years recruiting class. Which means a incoming player will have to learn and develope on the job. Coaches are indicating the Caupain could play that role. Hope they are correct. What is troubling is Mick had the ability to offer immediate PT to someone and still didn't get a true PG. Two things, either he is very certain one of the new guys can do it or the other options out there weren't better then what we had. In my opinion the key to the season is finding someone to replace Cash. Cash guarded, handled and scored. Would really have liked to had the opportunity to see what he could have accomplshed without the knee injuries. Filling his contributions will be huge make no mistake about it.

The game is still very fast for Guyn and that's understandable when you're only clocking in 10 minutes you never can find the true rhythm or feel for the game the only thing that shows is bad decisions and tenacity which he has shown. I think he will be fine and if any of the freshman push him then great !! but when it's all said and done he's been here for two years and is probably the most qualified for the job.

kg5, don't dispute what your saying but the PG position is one a team can't afford to be fine at. Its like the quarterback position in football. he always has the ball and he needs to be really good. No one I've SEEN on the bearcat roster fits that bill. New guy or old guy someone needs to step up and be very good.

I'm definitely not disputing your comments I agree. But with time and more minutes he will become more comfortable so I believe he(or someone) can get the job done it's not going to happen overnight but I believe he has the skill set just needs more experience

hope your right. It could make or break the whole season. Time will tell

I think it's very naïve to think the freshmen will step right in and have an impact, other than maybe Lawrence.

Freshmen have always played like freshmen.

Freshmen have come in and made a impact. Unfortunately they haven't played for the UC Bearcats and they only stay for 1 year. It would also be naive to think that after watching JJ for 3 and Guyn play for 2 that they will magically develope into difference makers. We need a point guard wh can play not some one who will be alright.

Kenny Saterfield and Dermarr Johnson came in and made an impact. Yancy Gates came in and made an impact as a freshman. Deonta Vaughn came in and made an impact. Lance Stephenson came in and made an impact. UC has had their share of recent and not so recent freshmen make impacts their first year. I think it is harder for PGs to come in and make an impact because they have the ball in their hands so much. They have greater opportunities to make a mistake.

Yea, all good Freshmen. I was really focusing on Micks tenure. It was easy to overlook Lance and vaugh because the teams didn't make the Dance. Yancy's didn't either until he was a upperclassmen. But those three did make a impact Either way freshmen do make a impact. We need some to make a impact this year.

I think the team this year will be a lot different then last years. Much more Athletism will be available to Mick. He will also have more options. Thomas and Sk should be very active wings and I think you'll see SK trying to get to the foul line much more. Thomas has better ball skills then Parker but as a weakside rebounder he has a way to go to duplicate Parkers effort. We'll miss Cash's savy and his handle and decision making but not his injuries. When healthy he was able to get to the rim but after the injury he became a bad jump shooter. Rubles should be much improved and hopefully Narsuk has added weight and strength. Lawrence and Strickland should provide better scoring but Modj's interior defense will be missed. If JJ can add some weight and strenght he will give them some post minutes. I really think Johnson,Caupain, and Mormon will all provide much more athletism than Davis,Guyn and Sanders. Should be a deep team with lots of options if a PG can be found to run the show. I think they will make the NCAA but the the folowing year, if Lawrence stays could be something special if one of the Freshmen develope at the point.

my comment regarding Guyn's growth/maturation was based on the fact that he actually played the role of a PG versus a SG...early in the year, he seemed to only be looking to shoot the 3 and not really want to control the ball...in no way was he perfect, but personally, i thought he took on more of the PG role, especially when Cash was out towards the end of the year

Whoever Mick gives the keys to, he better stick with them through the entire non-conference schedule to give them playing time. These kids need all the work they can get. Especially if its a frosh, don't play him just 10 minutes in a blowout.
