Potential Incoming Players

Mick whiffed on alot of recruits.. alot.

Relax.

We have no choice but too relax lol! What Mick missed on does not matter today, tomorrow, or forever at this point.

Just basing things off of the NKU staff recruits, is truly all we have to reflect on. John and staff went about it the best way they saw fit. It's almost like the type or style of player that fitted the Fans mold of a "Bearcat Player" was not recruited. No young emerging leaders, nothing, just guys that will fit the style of offense I am trying to run.

Agreed. Sort of... Brannen definitely struggling to mix high iq basketball and a level of toughness... Which btw.. Mick struggled mixing the two as well. They just happened to be on polar opposite sides.

Micks philosophy got us to March... But you need basketball players to win in march.

And I wont ever argue that, Mick whiffed on many recruits, but Mick recruited what Cincinnati stood for, we weren't the most talented team but you were not going to out work us or out tough us, we were going to fight. So many times this year I saw this team quit. I don't think Brannen realized how much he would have to change moving from NKU to UC. He knew that team better than anyone else, you know who you can be harder on than others and who needs more love and attention than another guy. I just look back at all the guys we had in our own back yard that we didn't even recruit... CJ Fredericks at Iowa, Kyle Guy from Virginia, Miles McBride, Jaxson Hayes said we never even called him. I just think this team had zero leadership ( Jeramiah at the end) and that's why they were so self centered at times. We didn't have a guy like Gary or Kyle or Tre or Troy to be like look this is how we do things here, this is our culture we built.

Agreed. Be curious how this proceeds. The mass exodus only makes it tougher to recruit...

But I do think John is fairly smart and understands the need at this point. Whether he can bring that in will be seen.

Our biggest advantage right now is we can offer a lot of playing time. We still have David and we still have JD, two guys I will ride with on my team any day. In my opinion we need a tough athletic shot blocker who can run the floor. Brannen preaches he wants to play fast and I think Rap and Vogt were the exact opposite of what Brannen needed to run that offense. I don't think Bryson Spell is being brought in to bang down low he will be an inside out stretch 4 and I don't know anything about Viktor. I think Tari was a good 5 for us be he had no interest in the 5 role. Bless Chris Vogt's heart because I know he played his butt off but he was just not meant for this level of basketball. We need a guy like Yancy or Justin Jackson or Octavius Ellis, guys who will do the dirty work down low but can still run the floor.

John is well aware they need a big athletic big. He essentially said it as soon as the season ended to Tnel. I think he also likes a stretch 4 idea. Hence bryson.

You mean what’s on Twitter too? .. it was on an open forum that anyone can look at, to explain better, you don’t have to be a member to view.. I’m not a member of that bearcat journal stuff, I just read the forums that are open to anyone which this was on

Some people think John is going to land all these guys. My guess is he is lucky to land just 2 or 3

He’s pretty awful when we go up against big name schools.

Right now uc has nothing to offer a recruit except playing time. He has a toxic culture, a busted ass league, returning upperclassman in positions 1-3

I mean does MAW want to stick around only to be recruited over and losing his starting spot? What a good PG? Does he want to play behind DJD? Does a wing think he is going to move JD to the bench.

This is the problem with this current roster and then trying to recruit from the transfer portal. The only 2 positions we can offer real starter minutes to is the PF and C. The 3 guard spots are spoken for, so your going to have to try and talk kids who are leaving for lack of playing time Into being multi year back ups.

It’s an awful situation.

Lol you right jhub, by default the returning guys all guaranteed starters. Best players to get would be recruiting over all of them. Maw and JD only guys I’m catering too. Ddj left team also

BIG time no on this dude.

If this is the type of guys we're going to bringing in then my interest in UC basketball will be at it's lowest it's ever been.

A former walk-on from Monmouth? Is this how low we've sank?

We're going to rent a former walk-on from the Metro Atheltic Conference, who averaged 12 pts a game, for a season. (He's a senior).

Also, when I looked him up this was the first thing that came up (watch the video in the link). This dude is a total douche to boot:

Dont worry we are not recruiting him

I’ll like us going after nothing but 6’5 or taller skill guys I don’t care positions. I truly believe this was always Mick plan here he just couldn’t recruit it here. He never really liked short PGs and you’ll think he would have love for them considering that’s what he was. Going forward though I want tall position less skill guys

The Oregon way

I've made this a sticky thread, and it will be moderated to stay on topic. Discuss players we are recruiting, players who are available, and next season's roster construction. Please no posts about Mick Cronin, UCLA, or opinions about John Brannen here.

Just listened to the Cincy Slangin podcast where they interviewed a guy who covers VA hoops and spoke in details about Bryson Spell.

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cincy-slangin-bearcat-sports-podcast/id1478020673

Some cliff notes:

-Bryson grew 2 inches over the pandemic (from 6'7 to 6'9) and that really elevated his game/confidence at both ends of the floor.

-He played for one of the premier high schools and AAU programs in Virginia; both of which regularly produce D1 talent.

-Apparently ACC/high major programs were hot on the trail for him recently but Brannen/Cincy had a much more established relationship that saw us prevail in getting his commitment. The prospect of immediate playing time seemed to be a big selling point too.

-Projects him as a 4 at the next level that can also play the 3.

-Says he didn't receive a 247 rating due to falling victim to the lost/limited AAU season last summer but says he believes Spell is a top 200 talent.

-His player comp is Evan Nolte a former 4-star HS recruit who was a 4-year bench player at Virginia. This was a bizarre comp because the guy spoke super enthusiastically about Spell but compared him to a guy who regressed considerably over the course of his college career.

-The guy wasn't some next door neighbor of Spell either. He lives 3 hours away in Arlington and primarily covers the DMV for his website, so it was impressive to hear how much he knew about Spell and how highly he thought of him.

The guy discusses Spell's game in great detail as well, so give the segment a listen to get more insight. Definitely worth the 25 minutes.
