Next year he may be first or second in line for minutes at the 4. Why play just a few minutes this year if you can optimize your minutes when Clark and Washington are gone?

I see Clark getting almost 30 minutes per game this year but he will get ZERO next year with no clear incumbent. So a new player can compete with 3 or 4 other players for 10 remaining minutes or he can red shirt and compete for perhaps 30 minutes the following year. Some players have too much EGO to let that happen and some players have the smarts to understand the situation.

Clark won't get exactly 30 in every game though. So in big games the backup might get 3 minutes. But in a lot of our games, there will be a chance for 15+ minutes.

I am only talking averages. I understand one player can get 10-15 minutes in one game and zero the next. If the average is 5 minutes on the year it could be a waste for a talented freshman is all I am saying.

Brooks seems to be the most likely candidate to take on the Deberry role which means he can play with either Washington or Clark in the lineup. So in a sense Diarra is competing with Brooks...even if Brooks plays a different position.

After getting a glimpse with the rest of the team, Chad said "If there are 100 FR better than Williams and 200 better than Diarra, I'll eat a flip flop."

Also not sure if this was mentioned but T Moore had 40 in a summer league game and got 14 FT attempts.

5 minutes on average would probably be a waste. But 10 wouldn't, especially if there are 10+ games of playing close to half the game or more. How you get the minutes matters.

I'd be pretty surprised to see Washington and Brooks in together.

Man. For me this is easy.

Nsesome is going to redshirt.

he has been playing basketball the least out of anyone on the roster, he is the rawest player and his offensive game needs a ton of work. Redshirting him is obvious.

I thought the same. Until I saw him play. Now, not so much. He can help right away...

Personally, I don't want anyone to red shirt. I would love to see a real run and gun and press squad this year. If that happens, I could see some bigs in foul trouble where we utilize all of them. Especially since they all can be nasty rim protectors and rebounders.

But, this may be just a wish so I think Ellie will redshirt. No way Moore, Diarra, or Williams redshirt.

That is great news. Thanks for making the discussion on this even more fun.

With the news that Nsoseme can help right away, and we know that Clark and Washington and Moore will be gone after this year. I think we will redshirt Clark so he is here after this year. Its going to be a bold move to help Clark secure POY and #1 draft pick in 2019. Big moves ahead fellas

Anyone can "help"

Do we need 7 bigs on the roster? Not a chance. So who's the odd man out? It doesn't have to be a red shirt frosh. It can be a returning vet. Someone is NOT getting minutes in meaningful games. Probably more than 1 of them.

He does need development on the offensive end, but the kid is an animal of the glass and protecting the rim...

It's an interesting question. We have limited offensive bigs galore ready to go after this year. Nsoseme could be the best of the bunch if scoring isn't a big deal.

Over half of our games aren't going to be that "meaningful"(/challenging). What kind of experience do these guys have a chance to get when we're drilling teams? That's what matters imo for young bench guys. Maybe 7 is too many but if the FR are better than the guys already here, they should pass them up on the depth chart. So instead of redshirt, we might see guys ride the bench and decide to transfer. Obviously no one prefers that, but I wouldn't totally rule it out.

Again though, it'll play itself out. When the time comes, the situation for each player will become more clear.

Remember when Brooks went down last year. That left a huge hole in our depth chart at the center position. God for bid we get any injuries, but it always nice to have a lot of guys on the roster that can play, it's a long season and by season end it would be nice to have the choice to rest a player if they need it.

An insider says that Eli can help all of a sudden minds change, when Chad describes him as a rim protector and rebounder that needs work offensively what bearcat of the past does that remind you of? Would you want another year of that?

"Help" is a pretty subjective term, the ballboy, grad assistants, cheerleaders, mascot and quadri all help. The question is can he be productive. I still say if there is a candidate it is Nsomome. The fact he has improved this much in what 6 years, another year to learn and get bigger would serve him well.

This is barring any injuries that would require redshirts

I'm doing nothing more than speaking on what I've seen after watching 5 of the 6 team workouts since all of the new guys have arrived. Doesn't take long to remember why I don't often share info here...
