I don't mind keeping Cozart. It's no guarantee that Herrera and Peraza are ready for 600 AB. I wouldn't mind Cozart, Peraza, and Herrera all playing 2 out of 3 for this season. It just doesn't seem like the SS market is for sellers.

wonder if Herrera will now report to camp instead of leaving the team for the playoff.

I meant the two players from the Braves

That Cuban P only had 1 year in the Braves organization but wasn't particularly effective. The other guy has barely pitched the past few years. Who knows? Sounds like a remote chance to be fringy bullpen arms, idk. I think it must've had more to do with Phillips being a pain in the ass about accepting a part-time role.

and thinking the same thing. Reds wanted to do the right thing. Be classy.

Cozart is under team control for 2 more years. He is being paid 5 mil this year, his first year of arbitration. I would think the plan is to see if there is a market for him if a team has a injury during ST at SS or if it happens after the season starts and before the deadline you wouldn't have to give him away. If he plays well between now and the deadline he will definitely be moveable. If nothing happens between now and deadline then you play the younger player full time. Like BP, Cozart is not in the reds long term plans and will be moved. Just a mater of when.moving BP wasn't about what they were getting back but freeing up playing time. At BP's age and with pending free agency and a 14 mil price tag his value was minimal at best

Do the reds see something in these two? If not why not bench him and keep him only saving 1 million.

Pure salary dump, trade had to be done. Rumor they were going to DFA him anyway, this was a graceful exit, let him play for his hometown growing up. The issue is that b/c of his blocking ability the reds weren't able to trade when value was up and got nothing for a core player and are paying him to walk, but again had to be done.

@ctrent
Bryan Price has Jose Peraza as the team's 2B. Says Cozart will not be a part-time player.
Jake, Cozart if healthy will be in the line up. If you sit him you have very little chance to move him. Especially if you want to get maker value. If another club has a need between now and deadline he will be traded.

Might as well keep Herrera in AAA for now then

Price has already been quoted saying Cozart is the starting shortstop if healthy

He should be in line up if not traded. I do think they would love to move him but with 2 years of team control left they are not going to just give him away like BP. Cozart could have some value to a team that is competing and in need of a good fielding SS with some ability with the bat. The issue for the reds is they will not be competing while he is still affordable and they have a cheaper option with upside.

Waite, there is a FanGraphs podcast called Effectively Wild and the one the other day was a Reds preview. Haven't had a chance to listen yet, but they usually have some pretty good info. Might be up your alley.

Thanks Jake. I'll see if I can find it.
