Everyone seems obsessed with shutting down what we're doing and going back to our old ways. Folks, we're winning by over 40 ppg. Even if some things don't work against "better" competition, we have a huge margin for error (and our players are smart enough and skilled enough to adjust). The schedule gets a little harder, sure...but we're going to be favored in all but just a couple games this year. And against the Iowa State types, we're going to have to score points to win. Our depth is our biggest weapon. Why be so quick to just toss it aside?

Yeah, most of these comments and suggestions are somewhat comical. When we played our slow-down, make your eyeballs bleed, style of the last 8-9 years, you could easily shorten the bench. Plus, it was hard to find 5 good players on most of those teams. We now are playing a radically faster pace on offense, plus the players are still expected to max out their efforts on defense. Shortening the bench is everyone's "go-to" comment every year, but in practicality, it makes no sense with the style of ball that Mick wants to play today. Plus, the 10 guys we are running out there have talent (unlike past years). If somone plays their way out of the rotation, then Mick will cut minutes possibly. But that hasn't happened yet, and in order for Mick to maximize the effectiveness of this new style of play, he needs all hands on deck and playing just like they have been. I look for very few changes unless someone forces his hand with bad play.

This just isn't a true statement or even close to one. His 26.3 TORate is the highest of any guard in the Cronin era (from my quick look over the data, could have missed a guy or two).

Gotta let the kid play through it. The other guards never had a rate like that bc none of them were at all the kind of playmaker that Jenifer can be. Safe and slow isn't Jenifer's game. Forcing him into that would be a terrible thing.

Waterhead, I don't think Jenifer has a TO problem. He had 3 TO one time (in his 1st D1 game ever). The whole point of recruiting him is so he can be a great passer and creator. If you try to rein him in, he becomes just like any other boring PG we've seen on teams that can't score 70 points. If you crack the whip on him, you take away what he does best. And the last thing we need imo is to have guys out there thinking too much...it leads to hesitation and timid play. We've seen far too much of that over the years. When Jenifer is in, he needs to GO! GO! GO! We can live with TO here and there from a freshman. PLEASE don't take the keys away from him.

I think you may be taking what I was talking about a little too far. Who is talking about "cracking a whip"? I am talking about tightening up the turnovers a bit. He has the second highest rate on the team per 40 minutes (to Moore) and it's almost double Caupain's. This would all be well and good if his assist rate per 40 minutes was better than Troy's...but it's not.

I'm not taking any keys or cracking any whips. I love watching the kid play...and play fast as long as it's not wreckless. I have been EXTREMELY impressed with JJ so far this year on the whole.

I didn't say you don't let him play through it, but LT can't say he doesn't turn the ball over. It just isn't factual.

We know it works because we've beaten teams we probably shouldn't have. And that was when the team couldn't shoot at all. This team is talented enough to win a game in the 50s or a game in the 90s.

I agree...but settling for the 50s is just asking for trouble. No one beats us when we score 60+, 70+. We are more talented than pretty much all the teams we face...playing slow plays into their hands. It won't take us to a Sweet 16 or beyond.

Good teams will make us play slow

Disagree here. Depth is a weapon sure, but our biggest weapon in that our first 7 are really freaking good.

I think if Caupain, Cobb, Clark, and Ellis can play 30 minutes a game at a higher tempo, they will get those minutes. Early season is for getting the back ups minutes, later in the season is for having the best talent on the floor as many minutes as possible.

Depends on who we play.

I agree.

It baffles my mind how we can go from a suggestion of tightening up one player's turnovers into that means we are suggesting changing the entire f-ing offense. Why all this over the top BS? It's a simple and minor adjustment that would BARELY effect the style of the player in question.

Yeah I think this Jacob. It won't be us slowing it down, teams will make sure to never let us get out in transition, similar to what we've done to teams that tried to run in the past.

I mean a team is going to have to be well coached to do it, but those teams are out there. If you were a coach against us, is there any way you'd let us run? How can you beat us if you give up easy transition baskets with the way we play defense?

We beat teams like that when we had less talent. Stop with the inferiority complex. We shouldn't choose to adjust OUR style for anyone. If someone can force a slower game, that's one thing...but to choose to go back to the 54-49 grinder style is not what's best for this team.

Yeah if a team can slow us down, good for them. I just don't see why we'd choose to slow ourselves down. And shortening our rotation against teams we should beat, or teams we need to score against falls into that category.

No ones saying to slow it down on purpose I saying every good team from here on out will make us grind it out and if jenifer keeps playing like he is against good teams he will have more turnovers....
In tight games the starters play 30 min so there will be a short rotation...

It isn't just what you said...others are buying into the old conventional wisdom that left us scoring 62 ppg last year. I wasn't trying to go over the top, I just don't want to stop Jenifer from being Jenifer.

We'll see how true it is by what Mick does with Jenifer's playing time. I predict my statement will hold true in spite of some goofy stat. The reason the goofy stat is useless is because we've had incapable guards that have had zero ability to pass the ball. Instead, they would pass the ball endlessly around the 3-pt line until the clock ran out and we would launch a hurried low percentage 3 pt shot. Guards like this don't turn the ball over much. But they also have a high opportunity cost because they probably cost us 20 points a game by missing scoring opportunities. I'll take a couple extra turnovers a game if that guard is delivering those passes that result in baskets or our guys getting fouled, which is exactly what Jenifer is doing. Your stat means nothing. Sorry.

I think we play 10 deep with lots of minutes for everybody against the bottom half of the league for sure. Experience for the young guys, rested legs for the veterans.

A short rotation means a slower game. These guys aren't machines...playing 30+ minutes is extremely taxing.
