St Johns Bball

Predicting what a team will be in June is a crap shoot. St. John's could be better. Both teams could be battling for the 12 seed in the conference tourney. Who knows?

I do take issue with the "Lavin is a better coach than Mick" comment though. Mick took a program that had been decimated and essentially missed 2 seasons of recruiting and within 5 years has rebuilt without the benefit of top flight recruits. He's solidified the foundation of the program with 4 year guys that he develops. The job he did last year was nothing short of phenomenal.

Lavin? He is an outstanding recruiter, no doubt. And I'm not questioning the resume' of his coaching staff at all. But I'm old enough to remember his UCLA teams underachieving year in and out - criminy, it took him 2 overtimes to beat one of the least talented (yet most overachieving) UC teams in the Huggins era, and he had 3 first round NBA draft picks at his disposal.

A great coach? That encompasses a lot more than recruiting. The jury is out on Lavin.

Dunlap just got promoted from SJU asst. to HC of the Charlotte Bobcats. That means Lavin actually has to coach. Now what Bxtch?

Lavin went to 5 sweet 16's and an Elite 8 without Dunlap on the sidelines. I think he'll be OK. Now what? Lavin will hire another excellent coach I'm sure to help the cause.

You better pray he does because he can't coach.

Lol. Where buffoons like you get this from I have no idea? Like I said before, Lavin has coached to 4 more sweet 16's than Cronin without Dunlap on the sidelines. You're probably the dope that also comments every year about how Calipari, Boeheim and Coach K can't coach either because it's all about their talent. Lol

Keep it here. If it goes off this page and into other good threads we will close them or ban people.

For fun I looked at the past couple years of St Johns bball. Yikes.

13-19 two out of the past three years....

The one "good" year they lost in the opening round to Gonzaga by 15.

Before that they were 16-18 and 16-17 with terrible Big East records.

Now I understand why landing one recruit that others backed off from is the highlight of your fanbase.

Have fun....

You are an embarrassment to UC fans everywhere. I will not read any further in this thread.

St. John's fans, don't take the bait. Please don't think all UC fans are like this. Dude's just pissed we didn't land Obekpa. Get over it, man. They aren't even a rival. You sound like a huge baby.

This is my last message on this board. Thank you bearcatjeff and all the other nice posters I have interacted with.... Flaming is a term for someone who starts trouble . Trolling if you will. It comes from " flaming the fire". I have nothing against gay people whatsoever .. You on the other hand I do. This thread I'm sure will spiral out of control.. But a certain moderator here chose to start it , instead of being responsible and ending it. Good luck on your season Bearcat fans. Take care.

Goodbye you homophobe!

Glad you're gone. :D

St. Johns will continue to wallow in mediocrity even while they're paying players to come there. Can't wait 'til you get caught and the program goes down in flames like it should!

And Dusty Baker has a winning record as a manager, while coaching Bonds, Kent, Votto, etc. Baker can't manage worth a lick but the talent overcomes that.

Same with Lavin and Calipari. Recruit the best, and it will make up for your coaching shortcomings.

Uc is a legitimate final four contender. Sju is a mid major bottom feeder that lucked into a legit conference. They will be lucky to win 10 games this year

Im surely not. Mick clearly backed off of him due to his ridiculous commitment process. Not only is he and unproven college player, he may not even play in college because of academics.

Seriously? This is a thread? And some of the comments have been ridiculous.

Wow, way to go Bearcat fans.

Screw St. Johns and their entire recruiting class. I don't care about them in the least, except for the fact I hope that they finish below us in the conference standings. But this thread is just childish and stupid. And yet the same people that said some of my early comments about not wanting St. Johns and their recruits to succeed as "not classy" are sure going all out here to look like jerks. well done.

So wrong on every point

Not a fan of having this thread on a UC board, but thought this was an interesting article...I consider myself to be a pretty knowledgeable of college bball, but I was unaware of Dunlap's reputation...it will be interesting to see if his absence has a great effect...I relate Lavin's coaching style to Huggins'...Huggs, despite not being the greatest play caller, won games on the talent he continuously recruited and signed...I think the same will be for Lavin...we would ignorant fans to say that SJU's recruits will not make SJU a tough competitor and that Lavin will not have any success...reading this article was interesting to see the implications that could result in losing an assistant...I do not care about comparing Cronin to Lavin....I am confident in Cronin to lead the Bearcats, as I am sure SJU fans are in Lavin...One thing we know, Cronin most likely will never land the caliber of Dunlap as an assistant...so as UC fans, we should really feel fortunate to have Cronin at the helm...

Go Bearcats!

I'd have to disagree. I always thought Huggs was more known for taking lesser talent and getting the most out of them. That would be the anti-Lavin I think.

I agree. Huggs took borderline players and made them great.

Lavin can't make borderline players great, but he is a topnotch recruiter and he gets the talent and basically lets them do whatever they want and hopes that talent rules because his coaching is subpar.
