State of the team

Mick would be scooped up so fast if he was let go or decided to leave it would be comical. I'm sure the donors are a well meaning group and they are essential to the program but donating money does not make them experts on running a team or a athletic department. I'm not going to start a debate about the job, circumstances or other issues dealing with the team it has been done to death. Enjoy the games.

And......the same can be said of the non-donors.

I plan on enjoying this one. Will be on the court at half with my son. Looking forward to a great game by the cats.

That's awesome! What is the reason for the honoring?

Son is one of the senior cheerleaders. I raised him as a jock. He had about 14 schlorship offers to play soccer, But, he's like me. He bleeds red and black and never wanted to go anywhere but UC. Decided he wanted to spend 4 years lifting and catching pretty girls rather than kicking a ball. Go figure.

They did a nice job with that today. I was pleased they took the time to honor all the cheerleaders, team managers etc.

I had a young man work for me who was a cheerleader for Kentucky. Kid was ripped and women loved him.

I remember saying before the Houston game that I was oddly optimistic because Thomas, Clark and Ellis all started playing well against Xavier. Seems prophetic now!

Sounds like a very smart guy to me!

In Mick's first two seasons UC went 24-38, since they are 160-78 with 5 straight seasons of 22 or more wins

I'll take that being the state of the program.....

I think our winning % will be much higher than that in at least the next 3 years.

It's not enough for me Jack. I need.....

1) Better recruiting / more players moving to NBA rosters once their UC Careers are done

2) Winning record in NCAA Tourn. with occasional runs to Elite 8 or Final Four

Obviously, number one leads to number two.

Jack, here's the thing....in the early Cronin years, when the Huggs discussion was still going strong, a large group of posters on these sites made the point over and over that it was time for Huggs to go because his 2nd round flame-outs were unacceptable and he wasn't going to get us to the next level....and they were convinced that Mick was going to take the next step. Now, you don't here anyone saying that anymore and we've become accepting of just making the tournament. Making the tournament for 5 straight years is suddendly the great accomplishment of Mick's tenure, when not long ago, most were unaccepting of 14 consecutive years making the tournament and a run of second round losses following some Elite 8/Final Four/Sweet 16 seasons....plus MacDonalds all-americans, college all-americans, and numerous NBA players coming thru here...plus annual Top 10 rankings, league championships, and tournament championships.

Again, for me.....I need better recruiting and better March performance before the state of the program will make me content. But, I'll continue to support the team and the coach by donating money and attending games like I always have. I won't bail on the coach like many of our luke-warm fans did. I lasted thru Tony Yates and Ed Badger, so Mick Cronin looks like Coach K compared to them. We have a good solid program now.....just need a little more.

I agree recruiting needs to be better. I agree that I would like to see UC send more players to the NBA which "should" in turn produce better results in the NCAA tournament. As you pointed out just because you have good players doesnt guarantee success in the NCAA tournament. I've said in a previous post I'm not sure how Cronin does that with the program in it's current state. You just dont recruit better because you decide to recruit better. Everyone would do that if that were the case. I base my expectations for Mick and his program in direct correlation with the resources he is working with. When looking at those resources I feel he has greatly overachieved. If those resources were to change and the results stayed the same then I would be very concerned. My true concern about the state of the program does not lie with the coaching staff but with the commitment and resources given to it by the administration. I am like you in that I am a UC basketball lifer. It's my first love in sports and just didnt like that football got all the money. I understand why UC did that and all of their reasons were very logical. I just am partial to basketball. With a shitty conference that pays us no money, an administration that has been committed to football, under funded recruiting budget, and outdated facilities, UC basketball will have to do more with less. Am I satisfied with what UC basketball is? No. However looking at the current state of the program I am extremely satisfied with the results UC basketball has gotten with the resources it has been given. Just my opinion.

I absolutely see where you're coming from. I just look at our situation in the late 80s, where we were floundering from a decade of losing and despair, absolutely nobody was attending games, our overall facilities were far worse than today....but....we did put up a new arena which was the same crappy arena that we complain about today, we were in a similar mid-major conference, I doubt our recruiting budget was any better than today because both Basketball and Football were making zilch, and our basketball roster was so pathetic that we had to start a chubby football player at shooting guald, and a juco forward at point guard. Out of that mess, miracles happened, and happened quickly. We're nine years down the road here, and we're kind of an afterthought in the college basketball world now, but we do have that 5 years of making the tournament to hang our hat on. But....I agree with most of what you said in general. We're screwed in this freaking conference, that's for sure!

Final Four in 1992, Elite 8 in 1993, Elite 8 in 1996...Cincinnati had not even beaten a higher seed until 2012. We badly need success in the NCAA's the next 3-4 years.

As I've pointed out many times, it's hard to beat higher seeds, when you routinely are getting the higher seeds. In 14 years, we were only outside of the top 4 seeds 5 times. We had a run of 8 years where we were no higher than a 3 seed 7 of the 8 years. When you're a top 4 seed, you don't even get a chance at a higher seed until the sweet 16. Five of the 14 years we were a 1 or 2 seed, which means we wouldn't have gotten a chance at a higher seed until the elite 8 and in the case of the 1 seed....never.

...yes and when you are a top 4 seed you should at least make the Sweet 16. Only 2 Sweet 16 appearances since 1996.

Oh, ok. I thought we were talking about beating higher seeds. So, we're now talking about getting to the sweet 16. Let me think about that one now.

So, are we saying it's better to never get a high seed and lose in the 1st round 50% of the time, rather than to have a great regular season, earn a high seed, and then go 1-1 in the tournament....with some Final Four/Elite 8/Sweet 16s occasionally thrown in?

I agree recruiting needs to be better but how can u complain about the conference affecting recruiting. We were in Conference USA for 10 years which was not exactly a power conference and had some quality players come through. I think once the locker room is amped up that should help a bunch. Some of these locker rooms/player lounge around the country are quite impressive and that in my opinion is a big selling point.
