We had a pretty good D last year with the same players. I don't worry too much about them having that capability. What we didn't have last year were go to guys.

Comparing teams in college from year to year is hard. mainly because while our personnel may have stayed the same others may have improved their rosters. Go back and watch the game again and count how many times we get beat exactly as I described. our scoring is up. We are losing because our defense is down.

The funny part about our defense is hearing a color commentator on TV trying to describe what kind of defense it is. At times it looks like a matchup zone with a box and 1 mixed with a triangle and 2. It makes my head hurt watching it.

Problem boils down to and this might sound crazy but we are over rotating on defense. We are rotating before the ball or man even makes it to the point on the court where it's necessary. That makes it easier to attack because the holes are there earlier in the shot clock and can be attacked quickly.

We have guarded terrible this year. If you would have been told at the beginning of the year our scoring average was were it is now everyone would have been thrilled.

Everyone keeps saying its the same team as last year. We should be able to guard.

Then why don't we????? We are scoring more. Why can't we guard anymore. Same D we ran last year. Is that coaching or Players not performing??? Did they forget???

The fire and dedication just doesn't seem to be there which is coach problem. But to a point this is kind of what some bearcat fans wanted. Let's worry more about the offense and less about the defense and we will be better off. Well careful what you wish for guys. Mick is starting to recruit for offensively talented players which is making it harder to coach the defensive end.

Its really a number of things. Dribble penetration, late rotations, rebounding among a few. Theoretically with the same personnel and a shorter time to defend our defense should be better. why isn't it?? I'll tell you why the players need to get their heads out of their asses and is the coaches job to help them do that. defense is about effort and scheme. if Mick is running the same scheme with same team what is different???

I think Mick lost a little of his fire when his health problem arose last season. The players feed off the coaches emotions and they just don't look like they wanna be out there at times. Defense is about effort and they just aren't giving enough of it.

You may be right but I got to tell you If you have to start teaching effort as a coach you may have recruited the wrong players. I used to say this to my kids who were all athletes, if I want it more then you we are in trouble.

Only way this stupid defense works if Clark or Shaq was at the top to disrupt the passing. Stop damn going through the motions on trapping ball handler up top, either go hard or stay at home and play straight up. Clark, Evans, Shaq and jenifer all are above average defender's, in defense we play they all be MAJOR liability trying recover to 3pt line. Go man to man on D Mick and I guarantee it'll loosen players up so we can get back to blowing teams out.

Biggest difference between this year and last is MICK!!! LD would've had balls to stick with 10 man rotation.

WH it will be just as hard to make a run without a defense stopper or a identity. Years past we had SK, Robles and JJ who could guard multiple positions. Go back and watch the rerun of the game and see how many times Ellis and Clark got caught in a switch and the smaller quicker player went around them for the score. watch how many times on the perimeter are guards went under the screen leaving wide open looks. Unless you plan to score 80 points against good teams I might add you will not be beating quality teams. We are scoring more and getting beat because we are not guarding or rebounding at the levels we have in the past.

I get all of this and I agree...but at the same time, it rings as an excuse for poor effort. You can't give up 77 points at home to Temple. There's a reason they were shooting under 40% as a team on the year. They have still yet to score 80 in a game this year, so even if we are bad, Mick teams are still going to be better schooled defensively than most.

I've been hoping for 40 minutes of nothing but man-to-man as well...even told myself it is the only thing missing for this group. Maybe it'd start to help guys take ownership of their defense...bc no one wants to look silly like Evans did on the wing yesterday. But if the effort and want to isn't there, it won't help.

Our guards get beat off the dribble too easily with zone responsibilities and the automatic help leaves shooters wide open. Either switch to man-to-man like you said, or stop helping with guards. Tighten up the areas for zone responsibility and make our more athletic wing players patrol the 2-point area a little more. Our guards leave so many shooters open to help out our big men on a post catch or modest dribble penetration that I'm inclined to believe they're being taught to do so, as opposed to just having low bball IQ. It happens every. single. game. Repeatedly.

They've played some straight man. It's been just as bad as the zone...

It's not the same team as last year. Last year the coach was Larry Davis.

Yeah that's what I'm saying (I just originally meant no mix of man and zone, just no zone at all).

For this upcoming game against Tulsa specicically, if I were Mick, I'd play man for every second and let players sink or swim. See how bad they really want to compete.
