The unnamed Coach was Mick and the recruit was Marquis Teague...
"This one coach, a prominet coach, head been recruiting this kid hard. He'd been recruiting this kid and watcing every game he'd played in for two years, every minute of the summer. Been to like 30 games. John Calipari came in late in this subsequent summer and recruited him for like two weeks and watched him in like one game, and the kid committed to Kentucky.

"The coach started yapping in coaching cirlces about Calipari saying, 'They must have cheated. There's no way they got this kid. I've been on this kid for two years. Cal just came in and got him.'

"100% true, John confronts this guy in Vegas, because he heard the guy was yapping. He confronts him. Cal approaches the coach and says something like ‘Listen, I know what you’ve been saying. I know you did, I know you said what you said. I’ve heard it from enough people, but I want you to understand one thing.

'Yes, I am the type of guy who can come in at the last minute and take any player I want from you. You can spend your whole life recruiting a kid and at the end of the day. If I want him, I’ll get him. If we want him, we’ll get him.

'Don’t ever get that confused. Be appreciative every time I don’t come in and get your guy. Don’t accuse me of cheating when I do.'

Calipari has cheated everywhere he's been. He doesn't have to like people saying it but the lack of banners at UMASS and Memphis (and soon Kentucky) tell you all you need to know. Sometimes the truth hurts. His arrogance and pompous attitude will lead to his downfall.

......sour grapes............wipe the sand out of your vagina

Makes me remember just how much of a grind it was in the early Mick days. I can understand how frustrating it would be for Mick in that situation. I don't think this would ever happen now, thankfully. I know Kentucky will get players over us, but I feel like things are deeply established enough in our program, that we don't have so much hanging on one guy. And Mick and UC are a more respected brand than back then.

I just thought that quote was great. There is really nothing Mick could say back...

You must not have a very vivid imagination...and I can't remember the last time Mick was at a loss for words. Assuming it went down like this (exactly) which I highly doubt...I am sure Mick knows enough about Cal and how he operates to jab right back.

The UC brand has definitely grown since then. Getting closer and closer each year to where we once were. If Cal confronted Mick now, Mick might sock him in the face.

Sour grapes? About what? Go find me a banner at UMASS and Memphis still standing after Calipari left. Facts are facts.

Find me any instances where the NCAA has held Calipari responsible for the troubles at his previous programs, or just continue to make up your own facts.

I'm not a Calipari fan but there's no denying the guy is supremely better at this craft than anyone else in his field. He is THE best recruiter hands down and his arrogance and cockyness is probably a huge part of his success as a recruiter. He's taking the same kids anyone else in the country would kill to have and he's doing the same things all the other coaches are doing. He's just better at it than everyone else.

Calipari is a snake and what is wrong with college basketball, he's cheated everyplace he's been and he hasn't really gotten in trouble for it. He just leaves and does the same thing at another place. The guys has no shame what so ever, and it sucks for the coaches who recruit the right way.

It's the same exact concept at steroid users in baseball and players who work hard with out steroids to get to the majors. People will always cheat, it sucks but it's true.

Again, show me where Calipari has "cheated". A booster game Marcus Camby money at UMass and someone else took Derrick Rose's SAT for him when he was still in high school.

Calipari might be guilty of turning a blind eye to this stuff but so is every other coach at a major college institution. Quit being a baby and just give credit where credit is due. Calipari is better at this job than everyone else, by a landslide, and if he were our coach you and everyone else would LOVE HIM because we'd be WINNING.

Right and OJ didn't do it. Where there is smoke there is usually fire...and the guy is obviously a douchebag. I can't prove he is a cheater or a douchebag. Would I put up with a douchebag for a coach if we won championships? Probably...but why would a Bearcat fan want to give a douchebag credit or kudos for doing things that have been surrounded by suspicion for close to 2 decades? Not gonna happen

Mick's whining about everything gets really tiring...main reason why I'll never be 100% on board with him as our coach...

You're always looking for something to complain about. We have a really good team coming back this year and all you want to do is belittle the program and coach. It's ok. It's your prerogative. It's just a shame that you continue to act like you are the biggest UC fan in the world and some people are fooled by your act.

I am not the biggest UC fan. Most knowledgeable UC fan? Absolutely. Biggest UC fan? No...

You can make case we got better ranked recruits back then.
