UC shot only 37.5 percent from the field and made only 3 of 17 3-point shots, but out-rebounded the Huskies, 46-32, with 19 offensive rebounds, while limiting UConn to 34.6 percent shooting.

The Huskies’ 48 points were the fewest they have scored in a game since 2002.

“We talked a lot about how we’re two different teams,” Cronin said. “Early in the season we didn’t shoot the ball real straight. People wondered if we even had an offense and yet we were winning. We had two losses on tough calls and bad free throw shooting against Gonzaga and Xavier, but we defended and we rebounded. We were just trying to get back to being that team.”

UC (15-9 overall, 6-6 in the Big East) spoiled the return of UConn coach Jim Calhoun, who had been out on medical leave since Jan. 19.

ANOTHER NEW LINEUP: Cronin started his 15th different lineup in 24 games, with Yancy Gates on the bench in favor of Steve Toyloy, who started along with Deonta Vaughn, Rashad Bishop, Ibrahima Thomas and Lance Stephenson.
Gates, who scored five points with five rebounds in 25 minutes, had started UC’s previous 10 games.

“They don’t start Gavin Edwards,” Cronin said. “That’s one reason. I didn’t want him wasting fouls on the other guys. And then, if you’re standing there as a coach talking about defense and rebounding, Steve Toyloy is probably our best rebounder.”

THOMAS’S RESURGENCE
: With 11 points Saturday, Thomas has scored 24 in his last two games. He averages only 6.2.

“I had a meeting with Coach before the Syracuse game about being out there and being aggressive, just being solid,” Thomas said. “I’m just taking my time.”

Calhoun was back to being himself immediately after the tip. The crowd gave him a standing ovation at the XL Center but poor play in the first few possessions led him to pull starters Walker, Ater Majok and Alex Oriakhi as he searched for the right combination. Walker's two first-half fouls limited his minutes. Later, Calhoun didn’t seem to have an issue with his effort. But as for his team as a whole, getting dominated on the boards by 14, missing 12 3s, nine free throws and committing 16 turnovers added up to constant frustration.

"There aren't a lot of answers," Calhoun said. "It's not like we can say 'let's run more inside offense'"

Calhoun said he was disappointed by the reaction the Huskies had to getting "hit in the face" to start the second half.

"Clearly this is a low point in the season," Calhoun said. "The type of effort we gave is not the type of effort you need to win games."
