His scoring average, which was 17.3 points per game when Vaughn was a sophomore and 15.3 when he was a junior, is now 11.6 in his senior season. He's shooting only 39.7 percent from the field, 33.8 percent from 3-point range.

"It's been up-and-down this year, with good games and bad games," Vaughn said Tuesday. "My shooting has been off this year more than usual. It's been kind of a bumpy senior year for me."

Vaughn has reached the 20-point mark only twice this season after doing it 11 times as a sophomore and seven times last year.

Its finally nice to hear Vaughn say the team has a sense of urgency and that they will leave it all on the court! Too bad saying sure doesnt mean its going to happen, and HE should have been playing like that all year. He is a senior for christs sake!

I'm still waiting for Gates to get that sense of urgency. Whatever happens this year, he's going to be a junior next year, and if he has any desire to go pro, his game must improve dramatically.

Desire----- you said it. A player just does'nt turn on desire. Hicks and Fortson had desire. I hope it does come on for him but too much sleepwalking and laughing after missing free throws is certainly a concern. they truly need a leader.

Are the players getting burned out?? Gates and Vaughn aren't the only two struggling right now. Dixon, after a strong start to the season hardly sees the court anymore. Bishop, although plays tough D, doesn't do as much offensively like he did at the beginning of the season. Then of course Lance shows signs of being one of the best players in the Big East and disappears for parts of games.

Good teams get better as the season goes on. Most of our players are getting worse or remaining stagnant. Goes for last season too.

Yes the blame could go on the players, but I would like to see what is going on behind the scenes: Amount of time practicing, watching film, lifting, etc this late in the season.

If my players were getting burned out, I'd seriously reconsider the effectiveness of my coaching skills. Their careers (nba, d-league, europe) are at stake, not just Cronin's. There is zero room to not give full effort every night. It all starts with an ingrained self motivation and ends with leadership on the court and on the sidelines.

Agreed. However, thats what the offseason is for. Getting your body physically and mentally ready for the season. Once the season starts, focus should be on winning games. Not on playing professionally. A player is best when he is 100%, no other way to put it.

As for coaching:
This is not a stepping stone to the next level. Mick was hired to win games at CINCINNATI, not the Celtics. He needs to find ways to keep his team fresh and ready to play on game nights.

Unfortunately the sense of urgency is probably too little too late. I hate to say but DV's lack of production has really killed this team. I thought this team would be a bubble team and bc of DV's regress this year it looks like we wont make the tourney. Hate to say that about a guy who has been the single bright spot in UC bball for the past 3 years but truth hurts i guess.

Hell, I'm hoping the whole team makes a comeback. Although to be fair, Cash and Davis have been stepping up lately, as well as Thomas.
