"The action will be fast and furious, and coveted center Chris Obekpa is expected to decide near the beginning of the signing period. He is expected to choose between St. John's and Cincinnati."

Other than proximity and his highschool teammate I cannot see a single reason to pick SJU over the bearcats! It WILL be a block party with Ellis, Jackson,Gaines and this kid!! Should be fun!! Hope he commits!

I'm in the minority. I think he has a chance to start immediately....or atleast get 10 to 20 minutes per game.

I agree but he has his handlers who are supposedly looking to get something out of this. $$$$ or a coaching job maybe. For that reason st johns is a major player

I also think he will play a lot if he commits.. He is a force inside and will change a lot of shots... Hope it's UC..

No link just know. He is from Africa so his family is not in the states. Typically when a foreign player comes to us he has guardians who are most of the time there Aau coach. There have been so many stories like this. Aau coach looks for assistant job or$$$. Read the book "play their hearts out by George donrmann". True story about how this stuff works. It is a dirty corrupt business and a lot of the times colleges are picked not in the kids best interest but for the Aau/handler. There is also mutterings that st johns is dirty similar to Baylor who is now being investigated

No source here but I almost put Lavin on Caliparis level. A mediocre coach walks into a mediocre program and starts pulling top classes out of nowhere. Doesn't smell right. Hopefully he doesn't grab Obekpa out from under our nose.

Scott drew at Baylor. A non existent basketball program who had not made the NCAA in over a decade with little to no basketball tradition. Next thing you know they are recruiting on unc and dukes level. Give me a break. Looks like NCAA is starting to poke around. Hope they get busted. Sometimes this stuff is so obvious it is not funny. How did huggs land Beasley at k state? Hired his uncle as "assistant to basketball ops " and then after Beasley goes pro he resigns. I laugh when people say it is all speculation.

i have a few responses to your posts....

first off- the investigation on baylor was completed today and all they got was a citation for impermissible calls/texts. if that is all you get after the ncaa comes to investigate you and you are recruiting at their level right now- that is a big victory for them. regardless of what they are/aren't doing- they aren't getting caught with anything major.

second- huggins hired charlotte's assistant coach dalonte hill as an assistant. hill was close with beasley and beasley was committed to charlotte. soon after, he switched from charlotte to state.

finally- baylor is an easy program to peg as cheating. sure, something is obviously going on. but every high major program is bending rules. if you think otherwise, i don't know what to say. we can sit around and point fingers at other programs all we want for cheating, but none of use for for a fact that uc isn't cheating. i'm not saying they do- just saying we don't know that they aren't.

I'm in this minority as well. He is at least as good as Jackson day 1.

If I'm wrong, well there is your reason for him to go to STJ right there. I am sure they will have him starting from the minute he walks on campus.

John Rothstein was just asked on twitter if there was any word on Obekpa and his response was that Cincinnati is going to be tough to beat.

I think Jackson is going to take a big step forward next season and show some refinement to his overall game.

Like Jeff I think Providence is #3 behind Cincinnati and St. Johns...there is an outside shot UConn pulls something off, but I doubt it.

as good as jackson day 1? what do you base this off of? I'm going to assume you've never seen him play.

Its pretty crazy having to worry about all of our players getting playing time considering all of our starting line up 4 years ago was pretty much juco transfers. Having obekpa and jackson who are literally the same player, is not a bad thing, now we can have at least one of them in the game at all times and give the other one a break. I dont know if you guys can tell by octavious ellis, justin jackson, kelvin gaines, and mbodj he wants predominately a big man who can play defense and run the floor to be able to press for the whole game, i'd be perfectly fine with him subbing in and out big men for every 5 mins to keep there legs fresh, are scorers are sk and cash we need defensive presence and thats what we got.

not sure why people think jackson and obekpa are the same player. obekpa has no offensive game. jackson actually has a handful of moves on the block and can put the ball on the floor a bit. he is a much better offensive player than people give him credit for.

Good points. From what I've seen, obekpa seems more under control than jackson, but the big east can rattle players.
