Johnson jumped from #148 to #111 in rivals national rankings today; 4 stars begin at #105 if you're into that sort of thing.

Any news on how KJ has been playing this year?

UC 2013 class ranks 24th in ESPNs latest team rankings.

I know it's going to be very tough to break the top 5 in recruit rankings...but when we sign 4 guys I would expect us to rank in the top 15 with our storied history and recent success.

I know we are going for 3-4 year program type of guys...but I don't think that is ALL by design. I think we are missing out on some great recruits (which we are going after) that I really hope we can start landing.

A nice mix of quality 3-4 year guys along with a couple of 1-2 year guys is what I would consider optimal. Filling weak spots with one and done players is not a bad thing. If we are going to get 3-4 year guys I would rather they be 4 star than 3 star however. On average that is...I know the stars don't necessarily translate to success all the time...but on average I think 4 star recruits will be better than 3 stars in general.

We seem to be maxing out around high 3 star and low 4 star guys and getting beat out by other teams or coaches on the high 4's and 5 star guys. As a fan I would like to see that change a little...although Cronin is good at finding diamonds in the rough in the 3 star range. I just think we should be able to get some of the easy to find diamonds as well.

Look at it this way. if 4 stars start at aroud the top 100...we are a top 25 program. Now let's say the top 5 recruiting teams like Duke and KY can land a couple of 4-5 star guys every year. So 5-10 teams can get let's say 20 of these highly ranked recruits every year. That still leaves about 80 top 100 recruits for the rest. We should be able to nab about one 5 star every other year and one solid 4 star each year along with some 3 stars mixed in. This is where I think we should be right now.

I think the we had some nice classes during the Gates/Wright and Lance/SK years but it's been a while. We have been getting more air time and winning and dancing...it's time to start landing some studs IMO. If our coach is top notch recruiter...that shouldn't be a problem...and that is kind of how he was billed coming in.

I LOVE what Cronin has done for UC and he is a VERY good coach...I think to get to the next level we are going to need some top tier talent.

As we all know, this is a topic that has been beaten into the ground time after time. So here is my response again:

1) We are not a storied program in the eyes of a 16 year old kid.
Many of the kids we are recruiting weren't even born the last time UC even made it to the Elite 8. In fact, for most of their conscious lives UC hasn't even been relevant. Oh you won 2 championships back when my Grandpa was in college? Cool. What have you done for me lately. Unless you're a hometown kid, anything over 10 years ago doesn't amount to much.

2) Back to back tournament appearances is not recent success in the eyes of a 16 year old kid. Louisville, Kansas, Syracuse, UNC, Duke, Kentucky, Ohio State, Michigan St. etc. have been making runs at national championships every single year for as long as they can remember (not to mention their facilities); back to back tournament appearances means nothing.

I love where our program is and where it is headed. I agree, big time recruits are exciting and they lead to more big time recruits, but it is a process. Right now we are in the conversation with a lot of great players, and being in the conversation develops into commitments if your program keeps winning.

I have learned after the last couple years that there is a method to the madness and that maybe...just maybe...Mick knows what he's doing. We are extremely lucky to have him and I honestly see our program getting to the elite level once more.

In Mick We Trust.

I can only agree with you to a certain extent and this is certainly not a bash Mick party as I am a HUGE fan.

Outside of the teams you have mentioned in the last couple of years...here are some of the "other teams" have been ranked ahead of us in certain recruit rankings.

NC ST
LSU
Marq
ND
OK ST
Pur
GT
X
Mary
UNLV
Prov
Tex
bay
SC
Ark
UcLA
AZ
Utep

This year we have 4 schollies and maybe 5. We are barely breaking top 25. I am not saying we should be a perrenial top 5 or even 10...but we should be just outside of that IMO. We can't use the excuse of needing more or better recent success when other programs don't need it.

Valid point. How many of those teams are ranked higher than us this year? I agree, we need to get higher ranked players. But also, isn't it possible that Cronin is getting the players he wants? Isn't it possible that 3-4 years ago Cronin looked at his players coming in and thought "this is going to be a top 10 team in 4 years"? Of course he's missed out on players, of course he'd love to have some highly ranked players commit that we haven't ended up getting. He has just shown me that he knows the kind of players he wants and needs to win. Rivals doesn't think our class is that talented? I don't particularly care and I know Cronin doesn't either.

I don't post too much anymore, but I think there are a few general comments that are applicable to "class rankings" every year:

1. Outside of the top 15-20 recruits, there will be many misses. The top 5-10 players can truly make significant impacts, carry teams, etc. However, there will always be misses, busts, etc. Wrong time, wrong place, etc.

2. It is very subjective after the top 20 or so. 4 stars can outperform 5 stars. 3 stars can outperform 4 and 5 stars.

3. There are many teams that benefit from being the only player in their respective state, and capitalize on landing the few top ranked recruits in that state. It explains how certain teams that "typically" don't land top classes or top recruits can do both. It is an anomaly, not a pattern of success. In my opinion, it is not worth comparing or asking "how can that crap team out recruit us." There is typically a LOGICAL explanation for it.....which doesn't have to do with past success.

4. Re-read #3. Now, go back to when Bill Walker and OJ Mayo were in Cincy. Likely we land both b/c of proximity to the two and other various reasons, many have NOTHING to do with our "storied history and success of the 60s." Geography. Location. We landed Yancy Gates the same way.

5. Rankings cannot be trusted until 2-3 years after the players enter college.

I've learned that Mick can coach and recruit. He can develop players, find underrated recruits and get them to play hard. I'm satisfied with it, and most should be too.

Like I said...I agree Cronin is great at finding talent down the board. It is possible that Cronin finds it easier to motivate the mid range talent and finds that a better model for success. That's fine and dandy...and I am OK with that. But he is still missing out on the big one's that he is going after while he is watching other teams land them...so I don't think the 3 star strategy is his optimal strategy. I don't care about the Rivals rankings either...I just care about the players Mick is going after and losing to other programs...especially those who haven't had recent success or a storied program or a big time conference.

I realize he is going to lose recruits to KY, Duke, Syr, and Uconn etc

I'm just happy we filled our scholarships already for next year. Don't wanna be scrambling around at the last minute to fill them like we did this year. If you do that year and year out, it will come back to bite you.
