Like I said...I agree Cronin is great at finding talent down the board. It is possible that Cronin finds it easier to motivate the mid range talent and finds that a better model for success. That's fine and dandy...and I am OK with that. But he is still missing out on the big one's that he is going after while he is watching other teams land them...so I don't think the 3 star strategy is his optimal strategy. I don't care about the Rivals rankings either...I just care about the players Mick is going after and losing to other programs...especially those who haven't had recent success or a storied program or a big time conference.

I realize he is going to lose recruits to KY, Duke, Syr, and Uconn etc

What players has he lost to worse programs that didn't make sense? The only two recently that I can remember us getting excited about coming here were Perry (from Florida, goes to USF) and Obekpa (from New York, goes to St. Johns). I don't really remember any players from Arkansas that came down to us and St. Mary's and went that way for example.

We've already had a few guys the last several years that were ranked in the top 100, and they didn't exactly play like a 4-star recruit.

This is off the top of my head, but I think Biggie McClain and Wilks were 4-star guys. I think Cash was too, and he has played like it. Not sure if S K was ranked because he was a prep school kid. Was Jackson a 4-star? Obviously Yancy was.

But what I'm saying is that we've had 3-star guys playing better than the more highly acclaimed and rated 4-star guys.

So I agree, rankings really don't mean much past maybe the top 20 to 40 kids. And a 7' footer is always going to be ranked higher just because he's "tall". I think Kenny Frease was a top 50 kid...........and give me a break.

Pretty sure you misread that top 50 list-I think that was the top 50 biggest stiffs in NCAA b-ball history, don't worry, Biggie probably came in 30th, if that is the case! :)

YeahI believe Yancy was 5, Wilks, cash biggie frease were 4s and Jackson and SK were 3s. Rankings are interesting to look at to offer some guidance. Admittedly I still enjoy looking at them, but at the end of the day I trust the ole ball coaches judgment over some rivals analysts.

Top 100 kids are generally accurate on the sites..which we don't seem to be getting anymore. :(

Went and watched Kevin play last night. First time seeing him play. They lost to Dunbar by 8 after they led for most of the game. I'd say he probably finished with 14 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds, and probably 4-5 turnovers. The game was pretty sloppy both ways, which resulted in KJ trying to do too much at some points. I think he finished 2-4 from long range.

Overall he showed some really good things, and some that assured you he'll need some time to develop. He seems to have a good handle and his stroke looked solid. He also shoots FTs very well. The good news is we won't need him to be an impact player right away. He can add some strength and refine his game and be a good player in a couple years.

That's my takeaway from 1 game.

I've been wanting to get sown to one of his games. I never really think to look up when and where they play.

Even though the game I saw was sloppy, it was still pretty entertaining. Johnson, Teague, and Woods are an impressive trio and they have a couple good role players. They all play pretty unselfishly. I feel like KJ could put up some serious numbers if he truly wanted to, but he doesn't dominate the ball like a lot of other high school stars do. I'd definitely recommend going to a game if you can. The only bad part is the caliber of teams they play. Half of their games are 30 point blowouts. No disrespect to the schools they play - Summit just got lucky with their class and is head and shoulders better than everybody else.

He's at 18.1 ppg and 3.1 apg according to the Enquirer high school stats. I believe he's at 77% from the ft line.

John Stovall of ESPN named KJ most versatile player The Scholastic Play by Play Classic.

Here's the description:

K.J. is one of the more athletic guards in the country. He is explosive and can play either guard spot. Johnson should be impactful at the next level with his ability to score from all three levels on the court.

Didn't someone on here say KJ would have no impact in college, somewhere in this thread? Hmmm.

I've seen clips of him, and had several friends of mine (one does high school games on local access) who are high school b-ball and football local guru's, tell me that KJ is a seriously underrated player.

The clips I saw show a kid who has great court vision. Also an unselfish player willing to make that extra pass. I was really impressed. And he seems pretty athletic and strong. Definitely versatile. And by those stats, he's efficient.

I'm looking forward to the 2013 class. I think they will be a difference maker.

I thought he was a little overrated, but never said he wouldn't make an impact. He is more of a Guyn/JD3 type player.

Me and some people who know more than me disagree with you. I hink he has the tools to be a really good player. He is physically gifted and has very good quickness and and can score.

Just like any 3-star recruit, it will take time to adjust. Some people act as if he will come right in and score 20 ppg. He has quickness, but the jumper needs some work. Again, I don't think he will be bad, I just like Caupain more. I also think it shows how much I like this class, I think that Strickland, Caupain, and Lawrence will be very good, so Johnson is just kinda like icing on the cake for me. I also think that Johnson might have a rough time trying to figure out if he is a 1 or a 2. He has an interesting skill set, but he doesn't really fit one specific position. He is an in-betweener. Versatility wise, that could be good, but it also could make it hard for him to fit in.

I am fairly certain I remember Mick told him he was being recruited for the 1 position. Your adjustment statement holds true for most freshmen and I never thought he'd come in and score 20 right away. I just think he has the tools to be a good player. I think Caupain is going to be good as well so we agree there. Can't say I know enough about Strickland to form an opinion at this point but things I've read lead me to believe he will be an adequate/reliable low post scorer at some point.
