Correct. FWIW I didn't understand why Mick wanted to redshirt him after saying he was the most ready of the freshman to come in and play D. I know Caupain was needed at pg so that left Mormon and KJ. I'm guessing that since KJ was local that might have played a part. I believe Gaines was a redshirt by Mick's choice as well his freshman year as he wasn't physically ready. My memory could be off on that though.

I have a personal theory too that maybe Mormon is being groomed to be the next Bearcat go-to scorer. My logic, if you can call it that, is that Mick had Vaughn for four years, he redshirted Kilpatrick and got him the next four years, now we see Mormon redshirted and will play the first year post Kilpatrick... I don't really think this is Mick's intentional design as I'm sure he wants all his players to come in and be go-to guys, but just a little thought in my head. Wouldn't it be nice to see Mormon knocking on the 2000 point board in a few years?

Think about it.

He had an elite defensive team that struggled to score.

They needed offensive help, not defensive help.

Morman was also ineligible to start the season. I doubt he would have redshirted had that not been the case (and if he didn't get hurt).

UC could barely find Kevin Johnson any playing time this year. How could they possibly have added another guy into that mix and found time for both? Playing 6 guys on the perimeter and giving them all meaningful minutes is really difficult. And you think they could have played 7? One of them was going to redshirt, they practiced and realized Morman was the better candidate in Cronin's eyes….he broke his foot and the decision was made easy.

Has Mick come out and said directly that he is going to redshirt someone?

No, he would never do that now. The point that people are trying to make is that look at the past 5 years. Every year someone has preserved a year of eligibility for some reason. You cannot play 13 guys, let alone 12. Playing 11 players and giving them all MEANINGFUL minutes is even extremely challenging. History tells us that someone will redshirt again this year, because that is the clear preference of this program as a player development program.

Yea, it's difficult to find PT, but it's not peewee league. There are lots of teams every year that have a full roster and don't redshirt players. Either way, Cronin hadn't decided to redshirt him but the decision was made when he got hurt. Shaq wasn't redshirted either, nor was Strickland. It's pertinent to the conversation. Maybe someone redshirts this year but I'm not sure why people speculate so much as if they are excited about someone redshirting. UC definitely could have used some low post depth this past year. I hope all the incoming recruits can provide some level of help and gain experience at the same time.

Cronin did want Morman to redshirt prior to the injury. The final decision is always on the player as xlax said before - and while the decision was being pondered he got injured.

Shaq sat out a season due to qualification issues and was allowed to practice with the team for most (but not all) of the season. You can call that what you want, but that is a defacto redshirt since he could practice. I never said Strickland redshirted either since he was not with the team.

Who said they are excited about redshirting? They want what is best for the program. Preserving a year of eligibility for a player who will barely contribute is generally a good thing. People look at the past 5 years, see a trend, and then see a few guys who look like they could be buried on the depth chart. Maybe the decision will be made for Cronin with an injury or academic issue. Regardless, there are very, very strong odds that a player on the roster redshirts if they enter the fall with 13 players. When you eliminate seniors, guys who have already redshirted, guys in the 2 deep, and the unliklihood that Strickland would accept taking off a 2nd straight year, Moore seems like the most likely candidate. That is all anyone is saying.

I think the point you are missing is that some of us are saying there isn't enough evidence of a trend to suggest that, barring injury or eligibility issues, someone will definitely red shirt. Not all red shirts are equal. Mick seems to only look to red shirt someone voluntarily if he knows they will be buried on the depth chart. That has only happened twice in the last 5 years (SK and Mormon) and even then one of those ended up being confirmed due to injury.

There are a lot of unknowns with the bigs this year so for anyone to suggest that any of them would be red shirted is way premature. No one, outside of Lawrence, has played any minutes on the D1 level. For that reason alone, I don't expect to see a red shirt unless it becomes clear over the summer and early practice that someone is way behind the others. For that reason alone, I don't think it makes sense to even speculate on red shirts at this time.

I think you are missing my point. The past 5 years, one player has had a year preserved for some reason or another. That is all I am saying. I have repeatedly acknowledged that all redshirts are not created equal. That is not what I am arguing.

Whether a voluntary or involuntary redshirt due to academics or injury. All I am saying and have repeatedly said, is that someone will very likely have a year preserved in some way or another simply because playing 13 people is impossible and Cronin basically makes a point to say every time he gets the opportunity that he huge proponent of redshirting players/preserving eligibility to build his program.

Also, FWIW, Cronin wanted to redshirt Shaq regardless and his academic issues made the decision for them. Also, Gaines was a voluntary redshirt as well. So really there were 4 guys in the past 5 years who the staff wanted to redshirt regardless of injury - not 2.

2014- Morman
2013- Davis III
2012- Thomas and Ellis
2011- Gaines
2010- Kilpatrick

Gotta love the attitude and love coming from these guys.

This thread is gold

This is precisely why I stay away from the recruiting forum. Something odd about a bunch of unqualified old men talking about a HS kid they've never seen play and making sweeping generalizations about their future.
