It's sounds dumb but getting good calls is sometimes related to stuff you say when your not playing games. Criticizing the refs might get a make up call or two. It's why NBA coaches don't mind taking a fine for there team

Yeah I can understand that. Not sure what advantage that would give on a random offseason podcast though. NBA coaches seem to do it during a playoff series.

I didn't mind the interview and it was pretty vanilla. The thing that I did not like was Mick defending Pitino and having a pretty lengthy conversation about how resilient Rick is. Mick should not have any say in this, the NCAA is still investigating and it is only their opinion that matters.

I agree. It just continues the feel that Mick is Rick's little brother. If UL wanted Mick, I have always thought he will leave us in a heartbeat to take Rick's place. Sometimes it seems like Cronin is just uninterested because of our conference situation. Obviously he wants to be in a P5 conference. I think coming from the powerhouse Big East to where we are now has him in neutral. He basically just said being in the American hurts recruiting and we can't get high ranked recruits bc they want to play in P5. There needs to be something that reinvigorates him. Not trying to debate about coach but just some things I think after listening to him.

I think mick does seem a little burnt. I mean you go from rebuilding your program back then as soon as you get traction you then get kicked out of the conference.

Now it's either learn to survive in the American or leave for a P5 offer if he gets it. He maybe just tied of waiting for it

I see what you're saying but don't buy the fact that Cronin would leave UC for Louisville.

Is all of our Big 12 hopes out of the pictures, or when do we figure that out?

Also, my other question is when does Nysier get on campus? Confused why he's not there yet.

...Mick

If he is tired of waiting for it, good riddance. The fact of the matter is that conference affiliation in college basketball doesn't matter as much as it does in football. It only takes a quick look at the last 5 years of NCAA brackets to understand that non-power 5 team compete in NCAA basketball. To allow Mick to make the comment that we "cant get good players b/c of conference affiliation" is just being a Mick apologist. Get the players that you can and develop them into great players like other non-power 5 coaches do :D

Big12 is meeting July 19. We will know then if they are expanding or not.

I enjoyed the AAC preview. I haven't kept up on the other teams at all.

Hard for Cronin to really say anything new. He's been around for 11 years now... we've basically heard all the things he has to say. The whining about refs gets so annoying though.

Agreed. I was really annoyed that he listed all these reasons why we lost last season. None of which were maybe his coaching and the lack of offense at times. All about the refs or timing/ luck.

Is it November yet?! Listening to that podcast got me excited just hearing about Mick talk about how he can push Caupain to get to the professional level, keeping Washington out of foul trouble and getting Gary out of his shell. Yes, it was vanilla and some of the same. Still want this season to start tomorrow. I want to see Brooks, Cumberland, Scott. I want to see what Washington's capable of. I want to see how Troy and Gary improved.

Everything I've read says that he has to complete a summer course before he can get on campus.

I would imagine that sets his physical development back a bit as the team has been working out and gettting in shape for multiple weeks now

Dude. While yes you can win with out being in a power 5 (we've been to the tourney ever year we've been in the american) and Mick is recruiting pretty well considering, but to say that being in a power 5 doesn't make it that much easier is insane.

42 out of the top 50 recruits went to power 5 plus big east (final 247 rankings) and UC got one of them #41 Jarron Cumberland.

Come on man

I think you should go back and read what I wrote. I said it doesnt matter as much in basketball as it does in football. It certainly makes it easier, I agree with you. But we aren't even outperforming other non-P5 basketball teams who get ZERO top 100 recruits. What is that an indication of? Stop using the conference affiliation as an excuse.

Pretty much GOnzaga and VCU I think are the only 2 non power 5 conference that are one of the 8 teams who have been to the tourney the last 6 years in a row

if simply making the NCAA tournament is your barometer of success, you win. If progressing in the NCAA tournament is your barometer of success, I win.

Can we please move beyond this 6 straight tournament appearances? It is a wonderful accomplishment. But, I hope I don't have to remind you that we are 4-10 in the NCAA tournament those 6 years with only 1 win coming against a better seed!

Can we focus on winning our own conference first?

Last year we would've been the 5th seeded team in the AAC if SMU was eligible. We then lost to a lower seed in our first AAC Tournament game. Conference affiliation has nothing to do with that.

If we can show that we can dominate our own league first, I'll be more than happy to jump in and complain about the AAC. But the Big 12 isn't easier. So getting 5th and being 1 and done in the Tournament in the AAC doesn't seem like it'd translate too well...so I don't know why we'd be so worried about conference affiliation at this point. Let's get our own house in order and show we can beat the teams in a lesser league before we act like we deserve better.

The problem is, our conference is not bad at all especially at the top half. and Winning it isn't easy (we've had what 3 different winners each season).

But the problem with our conference is the perception. Perception is reality to recruits, no matter how good we know some of the top teams are.

I mean, were 40-14 in the 3 years of being in the American. Not great but also not terrible

Also while, yes we have have only 1 the conference once and technically would have finished in 5th place (which sounds worse because its a 3 way tie at 12-6)

Standings for top teams in the american since inception:
1. UC 40-14
2. SMU 40-14
3. Uconn 33-21
4. Temple 31-23
5. Memphis 30-24
6. Tulsa 26-10 (only in the league for 2 seasons)

UC would the SMU tie breaker because our head to head matchup is 4-2

Good breakdown. Can't believe UConn averages 11-7. Gross. We should be better than SMU this year too, so that goes a long way in showing we can/should dominate these other programs.

Um. Can you explain to me how that is possible.
