Maybe he saw the writing on the wall with JD at the 3

Yeah I think JD kinda turned into what we hoped Gabe would be. He probably felt he'd be behind him his whole career and then get to start as a SR.

While its better if nobody leaves, I think Gabe leaving isn't too worrisome. Gotta keep JD, Tari, Saunders, and MAW.

Every player who leaves at this point is worrisome. How is it going to look to recruits?

Between Gabe and Harvey, Brannen has now had two of his four highest rated recruits transfer. And it is still possible that Eason leaves to. Where are the people who complained about Mick's recruiting? Assuming Harvey leaves, we will have 2 recruits on the team who were ranked higher than 237 (Eason and Lakhin - correction 3 actually, Diarra was ranked 196). I remember back in the days when a guy ranked around 250 was considered a bad recruit, now those guys are most of the team (MAW 247, Davenport ~260, Saunders 237, Mason 477). Brannen has taken to making a team out of diamonds in the rough to a whole new level.

His success rate with transfers isn't good either.

Maybe none of it is Brannen's fault. But it's going to be bad for recruiting. How many good players are going to want to transfer in to a middling American team, where half the transfers have left mid-season, half the high rated guys have transferred out, the average ranking of the guys on the team is ~250 and where the team composition is a mystery because of the sheer number of open spots?

Brannen needs to work a miracle next year to make the NCAA tournament. I expect a lot of excuses about how we have so many new players and still working things out to justify our early season losses.

My list of guys who may transfer gets a new addition as well: Eason, Mason, Davenport and Diarra. If any of those guys besides Diarra transfer, it's time to move on from Brannen. At this point the question of if he can coach is becoming irrelevant, the question is if he can keep players on the team. Put another way, the question is why do so many players decide they don't want to play for him shortly after joining the team?

^^^
I thought this originally but am starting to shift my opinion... There are SO many kids transfering this year. I think in normal years it's a big deal, not as bad this season.

Also think it's a bit odd that Harvey hasn't entered the portal yet? I'm guessing there is alot more going on there than just basketball.

Keep the core. MAW. Saunders. Jd. Tari. Mason. DD. Etc.

What is any coach going to say to recruits after this year? The portal is insane in a year when anybody can transfer for free.

The difference in recruiting is JD is actually performing. His rating is meaningless because he actually did it on the court. Mason was a 400 something, Moore was 340, and Mason has already done more in half a season than Moore did in 3 years. Saunders already flashes all kinds of potential. Tari was only the 2nd freshman since 2008 to have a block rate of at least 7.5 and steal rate of 3.6 (Nerlens Noel the other). The young guys have talent, it doesn't matter what their rating was.

I do think its hilarious that you wanna go after Brannen for Davenports rating after the season Davenport just had.

Sanders to the transfer portal.

Now I'm very concerned

That's out of the blue and very concerning. As the pessimist, I thought half the team may transfer, but I had Saunders firmly in the sticking with Brannen camp.

I'm officially ready to start the go fund me to get rid of Brannen. Hard to say what's going on in the locker room, but it's obvious he's doing something very wrong.

Yeah, if Saunders is leaving, I’m guessing more will. He loved brannen

I've never been a big rankings guy. I'm just saying there's a big chasm between how Cronin was judged for rankings and how Brannen is. With Cronin fans weren't happy when he got a guy recruited under 200. With Brannen a team full of 250 ranked recruits is something to be excited about.

The only time we’ve seen anything like this, it was Gregg Marshall, and he was physically assaulting players. You have to wonder what’s going on.

Thats not the only time. Penn State just lost 4 starters. This offseason is starting off crazy for everybody.

Players finding out they don't have to sit a year is dramatically shifting the landscape. Who knows what happens from here.

Wow. Very surprised about Saunders. We only heard 600 times over our last 3 games that John Brannen formed a relationship with him in 7th grade.

Jesus.

This program is a shit show.

Why would anyone stay at this point ? Clearly Brannen is an awful relationship builder.
