SK was not a pure shooter coming out of HS. He was a slasher. His hard work at UC has turned him into a good shooter.

Rothstein‏@JonRothstein

Can Kelvin Gaines be a piece to Cincinnati's puzzle? Averaged approx 2 blocks + 4 rebounds per game during Yancy Gates' 6-gm suspension.

I love the love from Rothstein, but those stats were against complete scrub teams. I think barring a serious improvement, Gaines will be good for 1 or 2 blocks, 2 or 3 rebounds and 5 fouls a night.

It's going to come down to him being in position and moving his feet so he doesn't commit the fouls. He obviously has the athletic ability it's just putting it to the best use. He has to learn to move his feet not just jump at every shot. I think with more work in the offseason he is very capable.

I'm on record saying I like Gaines. Love his energy and hustle. Still learning but I think he'll contribute in his role next season.

Sheesh. Rothstein mentions Gaines and Sanders? Hmmm. Where's he getting the info? Mick?

Gaines is athletic enough to do the job. I think with more playing time and instruction, he would be solid defensively. We all know it's his offensive game that we're not sure of.

Sanders? Coming out of high school I heard he was kind of like Kilpatrick..........a smart player and pure shooter. I was counting on him much next season other than some backup minutes. I expect Cash, S K, and Parker to get most of the time at the first 3 spots, with Jackson and Mbodj, Gaines or Obekpa down low. I do see lots of guys getting backup minutes though. Definitely will go 10 deep early on and for awhile.

i like rothstein- provides great coverage throughout the entire year and is definitely a "pro-uc" guy with his positive tweets for cronin and uc. at the same time, he is a new york player homer, and was saying the same things last year about sanders before he got to uc about him being a big contributor.

he also says obekpa is a day 1 starter at uc. this could very well be true, but all the people i know who have seen him play all think is a little more of a developmental player than a day 1 starter at a top 5 big east team.

i definitely hope he is right on all accounts. savino had tweeted the other week about how this off season's workouts have been the best he has been around in 16 year in the profession. however, when rothstein tweets about sanders, shaq, obekpa, etc- new york guys on uc- i tend to hesitate to give them full merit.

Sanders struggles had nothing to do with talent, but rather adjusting to the speed of division 1 basketball and conditioning. He will be a solid player at UC. Obekpa can conriute defensively right away. People think h is a project offensively but people who see him live say he is further along than people think in that area. Gaines was a rivals 3 star player.

contributing and being a day 1 starter are very, very different statements.

i am not ripping any of the players involved or saying why they didn't contribute. i am just saying that he tends to exaggerate the abilities of NY players as freshmen in college.

I can see why you say that but Sanders was the number 2 ranked player in NYC and I think many people, including myself, thought he would contribute more in year one. UC is building thru continuity not 1-2 year impact players. I like the approach since the brand name was down till the last couple seasons.

Sanders will become a "sniper"...not someone that makes a lving on the arc, but someone who will absolutely destroy you when hot and left open...a quiet assassin....really like this kid

I need a little help... I cannot find the tab on this site for posting new threads...
It's probably right in front of me, but I can find it...

Thanks....

Huggins

We all know one of Huggins greatest strengths as a coach was getting the most from raw players. his development was great when at uc. But the one thing people forget to realize is when Huggins was here he had better players with more upside, and the other that I believe is the biggest reason that Huggins seemed to be better than Cronin at developing players was the fact that when he was here they were allowed to practice 3 four 5 times more then allowed now, and even were allowed to run practices four times longer

So, Huggins wasn't a better player developer, just a better recruiter? Is that what you are saying? ;)

Really, last years freshman class will really show how well this current coaching staff develops talent. The program is going to need them to step up in a year from now.

I've been a critic, but Cash is better (health playing a role), Parker could be fantastic next year, if SK gets better handle, he could be even more fantastic, if JJ learns post D and stops fouling he could be fantastic.... so we'll see.

I think the development of Cash is underappreciated. The staff (and his own hard work) have turned him into an upper echelon Big East point guard. I think it was the home game against Marquette on ESPN where Bob Knight couldn't say enough good things about him. Opinions on Knight's personality can vary, but he knows the game and can spot quality players.

The player has far more to do with his development than a coach does. I wish people could understand that. The coaches offseason plan means nothing if the player does not work at it and stay in the gym. JP is a perfect example of this the past 2 seasons. JJ would be far ahead of where he is if he'd spend more time in the gym. I'm excited by what I'm hearing about the offseason workouts to this point. Best in years I keep hearing.

Not even close to what im saying. I just think when huggs was here he had a better platform to develop players. Huggins players always had way more upside thats type players he loved. I just think the fact that he was able to practice his players probably 5 times more was a huge factor in his being able to develop players so well.

Why are we still comparing Huggins with Cronin anyway. We could start a subject on how Huggins was a choke artist in the tourney his last ten years or so. I just dont see the point in comparing last time I checked Huggins was the coach of West Virginia. Not to mention Cronin has done almost as much where it counts (tourney) with half the talent
