Deveroes Summer League

Checked out the game today. Troy is truly the floor general. He was the leader today. He looks bigger than Kevin and Shaun. Kevin can score. Shaun played good defense. Jamaree looks like he is thinking to much. Lawerence is gifted but needs to get in the weight room. This is the best class Cronin has had so far.

I will post my thoughts later tonight but for the first time playing with each other, they all looked solid. They hit a couple ruts throughout, largely because they don't have any veterans on their team. It's a learning experience for all of them. I was pretty pleased with their efforts today.

Official stats-
Jamaree Strickland-16 minutes, 4 points, 4 rebounds, 2 Turnovers, 2-5 from the field
Jermaine Lawrence-27 minutes, 10 points, 9 rebounds, 6 turnovers, 4 steals, 4-4 from the line, 3-10 from the field
Troy Caupain-28 minutes, 6 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 4 Turnovers, 2-10 from the field, 0-3 from downtown, 2-2 from the charity stripe
Kevin Johnson-30 minutes, 16 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block, 5 Turnovers, 8-14 from the field, 0-1 from deep, 0-2 from the charity stripe
Deshaun Morman-28 minutes, 11 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, 4 turnovers, 5-10 from the field, 1-2 from downtown

While I didn't attend the games, there are a few stats, both good and bad that stick out to me-
Good
-everybody rebounded pretty well
-pretty good ft shooting
-lots of steals
Bad
-shooting, this is where we really need JD3 to help us this year, nobody besides KJ did well from the field
-Turnovers, you can tell that they are incoming freshman who have never played together
before, I bet that this won't be as bad once they get better acclimated

It's June, these guys are playing in this league for fun, and they have never played D1 basketball before or with each other before. All things considered, they had a pretty nice debut.....

Highlights! I recommend turning off the volume though, annoying monotonous "music" throughout video.

Thanks for finding that, I couldn't find any highlights earlier. As somebody said on twitter, Deveroes is much more guard-oriented and fast-paced, so Strickland/Lawrence struggled a bit. Caupain looks like he struggled with his shot, but did well with some of the smaller stuff. He needs to control the turnovers more, though....,

I think when he plays organized ball more, he'll be all right. He seems like he'll be a pretty good floor general in time. Morman was impressive but I have to give the heart award to Johnson. Kid just kept at it and wasn't afraid to bang.
I think Strickland needs to just keep in mind this is pick up ball and enjoy his summer. Get in the weight room, put in work and he'll get some minutes. Worst thing a kid can do is think too much about summer league lol
I'm sure Mick will get him on the right track.

The one and only benefit to these games, is that the competition for the frosh steps up a notch. That's how you get better, level up... so to speak.

KJ never quits, but he can be very streaky at times. It makes sense that he is the most comfortable so far-this is his hometown, he probably knows a lot of the other players, he can just go out and have fun. These other guys, some of them just got out of school, they are in a completely unfamiliar environment with unfamiliar people. With this class, everyone has skills and is capable of being successful...,.

I won't read into the stats for two reasons:
1. It's early; and,
2. It's Deveroes.

Nonetheless, thanks to those who attend the games and post on here. For someone who can't be in Cincinnati and see the games, it's really invaluable. Keep it up, please, and thanks for the video, too.

In the highlight video, Morman's steal and dunk looks a lot like Dion Dixon which is fun to see. I really won't say much because like everyone says, it is the DSL. I did like what I saw and they are a good bunch of freshman. Practice this year should be very competitive. I will say, the more I see KJ, the more I like, he is tough. I like his handles and his ability/mindset of driving to the basket. If he continues to work on taking his man to the hoop, it is exactly what we need to fit out style of offense. The one thing we have been lacking are guards who can beat defenders to the hoop. That should be a priority that they all should be working on, except for Strickland.

For anyone interested, SLATS plays again today at 4.

PS UCalum08, what time did they start the game? Did they move it up to 3 or just start at 4?

I just post the stats because they are intriguing, not because they have any merit to them. I've seen Justin Jackson score 27 and go 5-7 from 3. We all know that he would never have those numbers in an actual D1 basketball game, but it shows you just how talented all of these guys are. Last year, I saw Shaq Thomas come out of nowhere and slam home an alley oop. Sometimes, when you see them playing D1 basketball against a bunch of other really athletic guys, we forget just how athletic these guys are. It is easy to take for granted.....

Unreal, slats forfeit. I hope uc players read this when I say, go Eff yourselves. Fans come to this to watch and support the program and the players and theycamt even show up. I am sure they are sitting on their butts complaining how sore they are. Jermaine Lawrence tweeted how sore he was yesterday. Sh!t is weak.

They deserve to be called out on this. I know basketball can be a tough game, but stop whining that you are sore. Do you know how many people with real jobs go home sore everyday and aren't pampered basketball stars on scholarship? Fans pay to come to this stuff, so if you sign up to do it, then the least you can do is show up. If you are too lazy to show up or don't care, then just don't sign up to play. Or if you are going to forfeit, they should've said something yesterday. I hope they show up to UC games next year, I doubt Coach Cronin will take their sorry ass excuses of being sore as a reason to skip. Stuff like this makes me appreciate the stars who do care about the fans and don't just play the game to help their egos-I hate the Yankees, but Mariano Rivera is a great example. He shows early to games and talks to the fans, he is really passionate about the game, etc. Nobody says that these players need to do that much, but sheez, if you sign up to do something, follow through with your commitment and don't be such candy asses.......

It's sucks for sure bout the Cats, but they are students which are not paid to play in the league...

With that said, all my complaints are directed towards league...it has gotten worse each year... They waited 45-50minutes after tip time to make any announcement...I really feel like my donation went towards the officials as they make so many foul calls at the league, that the games are hard to watch...don't know if I will "donate" any more money to the league this year after their the lack of organization they showed today...

Watching Behanon play today, it was obvious that Gates had more skills overall...if he only had the drive/motor...

Go Bearcats!
