First Half Reactions from IPFW game

You can't get into transition if the other team doesn't miss or you don't make shots. Until the end of the game, IPFW really didn't send more than 1 guy to the offensive glass. As soon as a shot went up, 4 guys ran back to the other end. IPFW did a good job of limiting fast break points in the second half.

Basically you are saying this team is incapable of scoring? Hey Big East play zone against the Cats. They can't shoot.

Not buying it. Rebound the ball and push it up the court. Apparently its the only way to put up points

I dont necessarily hate Dixon , i just dont like him as a basketball player. i Love his attitude but his confidence with the ball in his hands is really low. Hes not a good shooter and regardless i hate him having the ball in his hands. hes like Darnell a turnover waiting to happen. I hope the kid plays good but i really dont have a great feeling if hes our starting SG or he has the ball in his hands at crunch time.. Kid is trying but is not the answer we are looking for.. I do hope he makes me eat my words though. Come Big East play i think hes better suited coming off the bench... I dont care for how Rashad is playing either(lack of enthusiasm) but i feel better when hes handling the ball than Dixon.. Also Dixon cant pass worth a crap...

I think you are mistaking dixon for larry davis

I thought this years team was supposed to be better in transition. If you struggle shooting the ball, why allow IPFW to get back on D and set up the zone?

Whoever thought that bought into Mick's b.s. This team is not a uptempo team, never was, never will be when Mick is the coach.

The other thing is that IPFW controlled the tempo in the second half and limited UC to 18 or 19 shots attempted in the second half.

Here's an idea! Play some Defense. If IPFW hits shots against The Cats then what will the Big East do

They only scored 59 points. The Bearcats defense the last 10 minutes was excellent. At one point IPFW was 7-9 from three. I don't think they made another one the rest of the game. The fact is there weren't a lot of possessions in the second half and the Bearcats weren't making shots. You can't set up the press if you don't make shots. The defense can get better and it will, but the defense is the reason UC won this game.

It baffles me when they look on pace to score close to a 100 and then come the 2nd half they be lucky to score period. I agree Bishop is looking good at the charity stripe but minus that, he is not offering anything else offensively. Maybe they should go Cash,SK,Rashad and thomas and Gates... I know there not getting to big headed after the first half of these games, what is going on then... It will not be long and You would have to think SK will be in the starting lineup... Hey a win is a win i guess. IPFW is no joke atleast. Basketball comes down to shooting it does not matter how big strong or athletic you are, if you cant shoot, then you will be limited. Good early test though i think!!

You just said The Cats could not run a transition game because IPFW wasnt missing shots. If they play good defense then where are the steals. If they only scored 59 then where are the rebounds and the kickouts for quick buckets. It's been very apparent this team cannot shoot the ball well. This is why this team was picked 11/12th in the Big East

I said they were playing good defense, not causing turnovers. You don't have to force turnovers to play good defense. IPFW was constantly under 8 seconds on the shot clock when they finally forced a shot the last 10 minutes. Until about the last 2 minutes, they were sending one guy to the offensive glass and the other 4 sprinted back on defense. You can't make transition baskets happen without turnovers and you are more likely to see turnovers off of the press as opposed to the half court. SK got a steal off the press in the second half and converted it. Other than that, there weren't many pressing opportunities. You said you didn't watch the game, right?

It's not being mean to say this team has very little talent. I can't imagine UC winning more than half it's Big East games with this roster.

Look, I am not saying I am happy with the offensive output in the second half, but you asked what happened and since I watched the entire game, I told you.

Its apparent that they cant shoot the ball period.. Uc has to have someone who is reliable shooter, someone has to step up or Uc will be facing zone all year. I hate to see what a Syracuse zone would do to them.. Gates played well and that is atleast a positive. Sk looks to be UC' primary scorer out of the wings and guards. Hopefully they are just learning to play with each other and will improve drastically.

As I said....Thank Gosh the game was not on!

From what you said above "You can't get into transition if the other team doesn't miss this IPFW team was hitting shots. Why were they hitting shots???

Because they are good shooters. There is a reason they took XU to overtime. They are a pretty good team. Not very athletic but very good shooters.

Help! What is the score? I'm at work and no radio or tv!

Bearcats won by 6. 65-59. It was 45-32 at halftime and then IPFW went zone, slowed the game down, and UC didn't hit any shots in the second half. IPFW hit 2 or 3 threes in the first 2 minutes of the second half and UC didn't score but maybe once. It was "Game On" from that moment.

My observations from the game:

IPFW is one heck of a fundamentally sound team. They do all the little things that make up for their lack of talent/athletic ability. They had good movement and spacing on offense, nailed almost every open three they got and made all but one of their free throws. I don't know what conference they play in but they should contend for a high finish.

As for UC:

Three point shooting: We're screwed. This is the one inherent team flaw that is in my eyes uncorrectable this season. Dixon has no 3 point stroke, he's developed a decent mid range game and that's what he should stick to. Davis' stroke hasn't been there since his So. year. Wilks takes too many bad shots and can't stay in the game long enough to be the three point shooter this team needs, which I honestly think he could be if it weren't for those issues. Wright hasn't looked for his shot enough. Kilpatrick is their best hope and he is a streaky shooter. If I'm Mick I'm setting some sort of stipulation where nobody takes a three unless they've got time to set up a picnic before they let it go.

Gates: Turning into a force on the inside. He's calling for and demanding the ball while setting up shop in the paint on a completely different level than he did so during his freshmen and sophomore years. If he stays committed AND the offense runs through him he should average at least 15 a game.

Wright: Some positive signs today including him finishing at the basket with the foul. However, his free throw shooting still sucked, which leads me to...

Free Throw Shooting: God help us.

Kilpatrick: Was solid today though he started to force some things in the second half which led to a couple turnovers. He just knows how to score and seems to come up with big plays when the team needs them.
