Mick a Candidate for UNLV?

Awful news of true. Don't want Cincinnati tough to leave with Cronin. Hiring a soft Drew isn't a good idea.

I'm still not sure Cronin comes here - I hope he does. But if he does I have some opinions on your coaching search.

We fired our coach in January so there has been huge discussion in the Las Vegas community on the direction to go for a coach in the intervening time.

Our last coach was an assistant with no Head Coaching experience. He was a former player with over a dozen years experience as an assistant. He bled and still bleeds Rebel Red. IT WAS A DISASTER. He could recruit but that was all.

The administration decided they wouldn't hire another assistant. EVER. They wanted a successful head coach. The problem was there are only so many successful coaches who can be lured away. Easy to get washed up old coaches for a retirement gig, Assistants etc. Hard to get successful younger coaches who consistently get to the NCAA's.

Forget the ones with recent contracts because they have HUGE buyouts. Forget the top 10 or so because they'd be over $ 6 mill. And they have hangers-on who need to be taken care of. Patino's wardrobe assistant probably costs a $million. Most won't leave where they are no matter what. Many won't go anywhere except a Power 5 school.

If we get your coach we were lucky because his buyout was down to a million. We wanted Dixon but Jamie Dixons' buyout was north of $10 mill. We wanted Underwood - but he was lured away by a Power 5.

If we get Cronin you have a couple of issues in finding a replacement that can reach his level. Your facilities are average, at best. There are probably 30 programs with facilities way better than yours. Coaches need facilities to recruit. We have super facilities. We built one superb practice facility "the COX center" and gave it to the womens program to build an even more magnificent facility, " The Mendenhall Center ". https://www.unlv.edu/maps/mdc Another problem is you aren't Power 5. Many good younger coaches will wait where they are - hoping for a power 5 job - rather than get locked in with you guys.

I don't envy the fan base. We've been trying to hire a consistent coach for the better part of 30 years. We had Kruger, but lost him to Oklahoma. I expect you'll end up with an assistant or an up and coming coach from a lower league - like the OVC. Kind of like you did with MC. You did well with him. I don't think you can hit a home run but hope you can hit a tripple.

I'd like to hear more about The Church. Clearly hogsack escaped and can offer great insight into the inner workings.

I was corralled at the back door while trying to escape. I was immediately ordered back to the alter and given a penance of 10 Hail Micks and 15 Our Cronins.

We're also not considering that the new coach might actually land some great recruits when he gets here, or bring some with him. Who knows? Lol.... but, Mick's coming back. Stop worrying. It's me that will be depressed. The rest of you will enjoy Easter!

Think about the time of year we're in right now. The cupboard is pretty bare. And any Coach would have to essentially start from ground zero for 2017, unless he's at a decent enough program to have already made inroads with Cincinnati caliber players.

Based on historical precedent, it is highly likely that not only will we lose incoming recruits, but at least one underclassman would transfer out. See: Downey, Devan.

What i find so funny about this thread is you have the same poster who were saying mick would never leave, dream job, loyalty,, blah blah bs. Now he's almost gone and they are freakin out blaming everyone but the person responsible, mighty mick.

Just like all the games he choked away this year, everbody elses fault but micks. Fan base is full of some real clowns.

Nobody's saying Mick is a perfect coach or hasn't made some mistakes. I'm just saying all of this makes no sense and looks bad on the University. Not to mention there's no real reason to want Mick gone. If you want to base a Coach on conference or NCAA tourney success then Tom Crean should've been fired at Indiana about a year ago.

At the end of the day I won't be celebrating if Mick leaves, but there won't be time for any sadness. Work to be done and we'll need to find a good coach quickly who can repair any damage done and possibly keep this team intact. It's a long shot but the only one that doesn't make my stomach churn.

Maybe we can grab some grad transfers to stop the bleeding if a few players leave. Too soon for #StickWithEvansAndClark on Twitter?
