Mick Cronin needs some help

BearcatTalk

Help Support BearcatTalk:

Awhile back Mick talked about the possibility of Shaq playing the two. Imagine a 6'3", 6'7", 6'5" (Sanders) or 6'7" (Clark), perimeter and that' if TC doesn't grow and he's just 18. He wanted Shaq to get lift on the ball from the outside. Something he still seems unable to do. Frankly I'm excited about Mormon on the wing. He's tough, hardnosed and athletic.

Yes sir. I have high expectations for him next year too. We will have plenty of talent coming in for next year, its really exciting.

Don't sleep on Mormon and don't sleep on Gary Clark. This is going to be a young but very deep team. Possibly the deepest front line in a decade.

I will say:
Caupain/GG/Mormon
Johnson/Mormon
Thomas/Sanders/Clark
Lawrence/Clark/Moore
Deberry/Moore/Strickland

Add to that a guy like Graham? How could you not be excited?

Exactly. Lots be be excited about for the next couple years. Hopefully Mick can keep recruiting at this level.

the depth and varying skill sets we could potentially have at the 4-5 makes just about any style of play possible as well as cause match-up problems for other teams. I like the up-tempo stuff but come tournament time playing half court is crucial.

We seem to have gotten a tad off track from what the original thread was about. Help MC. Well I would like to throw this out there not to anger anyone but to try to highlight somethng I think is a very real possibility.

Attendence is a huge issue surrounding the program. Not just from a cheering during games standpoint but what the revenue does to help elevate the program. Many profess to wanting a great program. Where are they? You hear, I don't think MC is the right man for the job. The style is boring. The building is bad. I'll return when things are better. I want a better schedule.

Here is a thought. In my mind the worst thing you can do if you are really interested in change for the program is to stop going to the games. Fill the place. Show the administration that the people of Cincinnati and the Alum want and will support a well run program. Right now the question exits, if MC or another coach builds a winner will the people return and support the team. We have made the dance 3 years running and a 4th on the way. Some will tell you yes but proof is in the doing. In my mind this is the worst of the wosrt situations to be in. We have a fan base that will not attend games regulary. We have a Coach who has restored some of the luster that used to be associated with the Cats. Giving him the nesscessary rescources Facilities, Air planes and such are just a few of the things he could use to finish the very difficult task he took on. Can he take the leap with the proper support? If we don't go to the games he can't have all the tools he needs to make it happen and we can't answer that question. Some will say when he gets us there we will return. He may never be able to finish the job without our support by going to the games. MC is performing well on a very limited budget, could he do better with more support?. I think he has earned at least a opprtunity to try without us making it tougher by not going to the games. He is not going to get fired. He may leave for a position where he has all the rescources but he isn't getting fired. If you truly want a winner it all starts with the fans showing there support. That is what drives the train and funds the budget. Without a positive ROI why would Admin waste funds to elevate a program nobody wants to see.

Waite, I agree with everything you stated in the previous post.

However, until UC finds a way to cultivate new fans the situation is not going to change. There seems to be no middle ground among the fans in regard to Mick, they either like him or dislike him. He is either the savior of the program or the traitor who went to Louisville. Those that left because of the firing of Huggins and consider Mick a traitor are not coming back.

Ralph that is my point. For those wanting a change the only way that is going to happen is if MC fails. By staying away and depriving him of the things he needs to either build the program or fail it is keeping the program from taking the next step. Admin has to be satisfied with his results. All funds are going to FB and nothing is being invested in BB. Still he has them in tourney and fans are trickling back. He could do this for years. If you want a elite program MC will need to be given the resources to finish the job and make it happen. The flip side is we support the program and he doesn't get job done and is replaced. That comes with us doing our part by going to the games.

This is exactly what Indiana did. They never stopped supporting their team, still sold out to see a team with 7 wins and they were able to rise up from the ashes as well. There are a lot of things that the program needs and the very first thing on that agenda is for fan support, support from local media wouldn't hurt but not holding my breath. There are beginnings of a buzz around the team, lets keep it going, sell out some games, average over 10K for the rest of the year, show the nation and recruits that we are a program still on the rise.

Thomas at the 2 is an interesting proposition but I would doubt it materializes. He's done a decent job of hitting his threes this year but he hasn't shot many. Don't know how accurate he is going to be unless he's open and set.

Cronin will have to get a few players to really work on their outside shots for next year so we have some balance. Because KJ already has nice skills in the rest of his game I would like to see him concentrate the off season on long range shooting. He's quick enough to create his own looks and has a good vertical so it shouldn't be too easy to block him. Caupain will be a decent option from the point. We probably will focus less on 3's and more on penetration next year.

We may not have a great shooter but we should have more outside shooting options. PG...check. SG...check. Wing...check. PF...check. This year we only had 3 positions shooting outside shots and next year we will have 4.

Who is accurate when they are not open and set?

KJ doesn't have to create shots from 3 because teams don't guard him tightly. They sag off because to date he is a poor outside shooter. He is quick enough to create his own shots, but I don't really recall him using that quickness driving and shooting, he is more of a stand still shooter.

I read somewhere that Caupain shot 43% from three in HS. This is why Mick was telling him not to be tentative and shoot more open shots. And on the flip side KJ's struggles from outside may be why he hasn't been seeing the floor much, that and we need SK on the floor. It definitely isn't KJ's defense or hustle.

Shaq does have a better percentage mostly because he is selective and takes shots when he is open and doesn't really force shots, just forces his dribbling in the lane and gets the ball knocked loose.

I'm not sure what is in your water (or mine) but I find myself agreeing with you again. :D

The only thing I would say is that football is only getting the money because of the ROI that the luxury boxes will bring. A new basketball arena (or renovated one) would not be able to pay for itself in 5 years or whatever it is unless serious donations were given. That's the difference with where the money is going. Also, the upgrade to football is important should UC have an opportunity to get into a new conference soon. That would lead to more money for the University which would also help basketball, etc. You are right on about this program taking the next steps though. Something needs to be done. I already prompted Whit Babcock on twitter last week and plan to keep doing that every few months or so. I want to make sure it is prevalent in his mind. I would encourage others to do the same. Please don't be annoying about it though! :D

agreed. The chance to get in a power conference is dependent on FB. I'll leave nudging Whitt up to you. I'm a old man and twitter just isn't my thing. lol.

If Shaq adds weight, he could dominate smaller twos. He is probably our most gifted athlete after JJ.

He doesn't have the ball handing or perimeter shooting to play the two guard. Johnson and Morman will be primarily at that spot and you will occasionally see Guyn there next year. Obviously if UC were to land Graham he would probably start at that spot.

Guys I would be happy if he added some weight. The other thing he needs to work on is playing the game without the ball in his hands. Lots of kids come out of high school where they utilized their athletic ability and one on one skills to dominate. Never really learning how to apply them to the team concept. More then any other kid on the team I see this as a problem for Shaq lots of ability but can't seem to blend it into the team.He is much better in a open floor environment. Just seems to have more trouble finding his comfort zone in the slow down half court offense. Seeing how we don't push the ball much he seems to disappear at times.

So Shaq doesn't have the perimeter shooting but Johnson does? Percentages will disagree.

SK has played the 2 most of this season, are his handles really that much better than Shaq's? And, SK's ball handling has improved much since last year

I don't think he would play there much, but I could see trying to get some mismatches via switches and defensive breakdowns so that he could dominate some smaller guard. When he has to go up against guys his size right now, he just doesn't have the strength to be consistent. If you got him the ball with a smaller guy on him, look out.

Small sample size. Shaq is 5/13 from three this year. Just because his % is better than Johnson's doesn't mean he's better. I'd rather have KJ shoot an open 3 than Shaq.

You say sample size but could also be he is more selective and doesn't shoot 3's a lot and only takes them when he is open and set.

edit: He was 3-8 (37.5%) Last year. Pretty selective when he shoots from deep

So 8-21 in a season and a half - that's as many as KJ shot in 12 games

With Troy on the court, you could play Shaq and Jermaine with him at the 2 and 3. On defense, Jermaine can guard the slower, bigger guys while Shaq can guard the smaller, quicker guy and use his length to frustrate him.

On offense, Jermaine and Troy can provide plenty of spacing for a slasher like Shaq.

Also I disagree with the criticisms of Shaq's ball handling. Shaq has gotten in trouble some this year when he puts his head down, attacks the rim in traffic and gets stripped. But his ball handling is very solid for a wing overall and his turnover rate of 16.9% isn't bad at all.
